The System-Wide Power-Monitoring and Analysis Solution

E

Graphically view an aerial map of yourfacility or distribution network. PSS offersfull zoom and pan capabilities.

lectro Industries/GaugeTech introduces Power System Supervisor, the first

fully integrated, Ethernet-based power-monitoring system. This unequaled

program monitors the integrity of an entire distribution network. It displays and

analyzes disturbances, usage and power quality data. Its unique Ethernet-based

peer-to-peer architecture allows it to provide any PC workstation with high-speed

alarm information and data analysis.

PSS uses Windows 9x or NT to graphically depict an entire distribution

system. System operators can identify and solve complex problems simply by

examining their graphic representations on screen.

When an electrical-distribution network goes down, you need to know:

What happened? When will it be up and running? To answer these questions

and avoid recurrences you need the preventative and forensic analysis that

PSS provides.

PSS analyzes system problems and reduces downtime. It presents data

graphically, to foster quick interpretation. Use it to uncover hidden threats,

optimize your power usage and control equipment. PSS immediately alerts you to

problems the instant they occur. It analyzes power-distribution

hazards, from system-wide failures to deadly

single-circuit transients.

PSS is also a comprehensive energy-metering

package, with cost-allocation and automated

billing functions. These let you get a handle on

your distribution network’s consumption,

demands and costs. ◆ ◆

Exception PollingUse PSS with DMMS 300+, Futura+ orNexus monitors to conduct high-speed exception polling. The exception registers immediately notifyyou of dangerous or undesirable conditions. Programmable warningssound and the system displays the exception’s precise origin. Exceptionsregister even while other monitoredpoints are being interrogated; the sys-tem is unimpeded by user interaction.

Immediate, Real-Time WarningsPower System Supervisor immediatelyalerts you to a host of importantalarm conditions, including exceededlimits, power-quality fluctuations, harmonic distortions, peak-demandconditions, voltage deviation, breakeroperations and control trigger situations.

Confidently control any equipmentfrom your graphical display. Conductcontrol operations for alarms, isolation, protection and more.Comprehensive security proceduresare available.

• Automatically control relays, breakers, generators, etc.

• Manually or event-trigger relays• Obtain real-time feedback on the

results of operations

PSS’s programmable alarms cover all situations:

• Breaker operations• Relay operations• Over and under alarm events• Peak-load conditions• Power-quality events• Etc.

Alarm Logging and AnalysisPSS pinpoints problems and potentially dangerous conditions. The unprecedented speed of this software’s architecture allows you toinstantly minimize equipment downtime. PSS trends all alarmconditions, including the occurrenceof operations, control, power-qualityevents, and exceeded limits. Theseevents are logged and listed by alarmtype, date, time of occurrence, andthe that time the condition returnedto normal. This information is available for retrieval, trending and analysis.

Network-Wide Alarm InformationThe system also provides network-wide alarm information to specifiedworkstations. Sound and graphicswarn users of dangerous conditions.

High-Speed, Reliable AlarmsTraditional power-monitoring systemsare handicapped by master-slavepolling sequences. This severely limitsthe speed at which they make dataavailable and prevents them fromdetecting alarm conditions that revertto normal before the value is polled.PSS’s architecture lets it respond toalarm conditions within seconds bydirectly uploading the pertinent datato your workstations. And PSS registers all alarm situations, regardless of their duration.

PSS offers many more advancedpower-usage features than traditionalSCADA systems:

• Load analysis• Graphical trending• Demand analysis• Time-of-use cost allocation• Automatic billing• Load aggregation• Watt and var distribution• Power-factor analysis

PSS uses the mass memory of Futura+monitors to:• Trend data without hindering

system performance or response time

• Supply unlimited data-storage capacity

Load and Usage Charting and TrendingChart or graph any electrical parameter for any part of your system. Display data in a number ofuseful and familiar formats.

Trend• Kilowatt usage• Watt and var demand• Power-factor distribution• Voltage deviation• Current distribution• Frequency• Percent of total harmonic distortion• And much more

Automatic Billing Removes theGuess WorkPSS can automatically generate a chargeable bill for each monitoredpoint (or any subset of the monitoredsystem) based on actual consumption. There’s no reason to guess on costallocation for different departments orseparate tenants. The system analyzes loads and demands, andtheir contributory components. It calculates:

• On- and off-peak demand• Total usage, with costs• Demand penalties• Main and contributory demand

schedules• Load aggregation• Load duration curves• Loads over time

POWER-QUALITY ANALYSIS

PSS records power quality at everymonitored point. It depicts waveforms of:

• Voltage disturbances (surges and sags)

• Harmonics• Transients and impulses• Current faults and short circuits• Most other power-quality factors

Voltage Surges and SagsView voltage surges and sags for anypoint. When adverse voltage conditions occur, download theevent’s waveform data to performpre-and post-event waveform analysis.

Harmonic Analysis Reveals Hidden ThreatsMonitor the percent of total harmonicdistortion and its components at everypoint. Display the odd and even andthe maximum and minimum harmonics. When harmonic signaturesexceed programmed limits, PSS warnsyou immediately.

Page 7: Power System Supervisor: Ethernet-Based Power Monitoring ... · Power System Supervisor: Ethernet-Based Power Monitoring and Control ... point (or any subset of the monitored system)

Current Fault SignaturesWhen current faults occur, immediately access data to analyzethe breaker condition and operatingefficiency: the pre- and post-faultwaveform phases, and the resolutionand time (in cycles) for the breakeroperation. Examine a long-termpower-quality problem (such as aninrush current, a high-impedance orintermittent fault, or a breaker over-load) by reviewing hundreds of cyclesof waveform recordings per event.

Power-Factor AnalysisPower factor is a serious concern intoday’s climate of energy deregulation. Many utilities imposestiff power-factor penalties. A poorpower factor can also affect thelongevity and stability of your electrical-distribution network: It prematurely ages equipment andleads to costly maintenance. To saveenergy, use PSS for power-factormonitoring, trending and control.

PSS uses almost no networkresources. It is the only system thatpiggy-backs to existing EthernetSystem wiring without the threat oflosing performance.

Power System Supervisor is muchfaster than traditional SCADA systems. Its revolutionary architectureeliminates the usual bottleneck—youget superfast access to information, regardless of the quantity you need.Futura+ monitors’ dual ports down-load real-time data to a SCADA system and simultaneously downloadstored usage and power-quality data.

Ethernet TCP/IP: Unrivaled SpeedEthernet TCP/IP is the standard infast, reliable communication. PSS harnesses the raw power of thisproven technology to provide up to a100-megabit response rate with built-in collision detection. EthernetProcessing Units provide the conversion to this high-speed protocol, and because they also compress the data, the information istransmitted at an unprecedented rate.

EIG’s Ethernet Processing Units (EPU1000s) convert the data from all moni-tored points to high-speed EthernetTCP/IP. The EPUs then transfer thedata (via 10- or 100-megabit Ethernethubs) to a server or workstation.

Because TCP/IP is the standardnetwork protocol, you can construct asimple, fast and reliable system usingoff-the-shelf components. Your monitoring system becomes a local-or wide-area network, with speedsand capabilities never before possible.

Distributed Processing: PeerlessPeer-to-Peer NetworkingIf your system forces you to limit thequantity of data you acquire or handicaps the speed at which youcan retrieve it, it’s time for PSS. PSSprovides direct, real-time multiuseraccess to intelligent meters. You canadd an infinite number of meters toyour system without overloading it or slowing it down.

NETWORK FRIENDLY NEIGHBOR

Network administratorsapprove of PSS because thesystem uses almost no system resources

Page 8: Power System Supervisor: Ethernet-Based Power Monitoring ... · Power System Supervisor: Ethernet-Based Power Monitoring and Control ... point (or any subset of the monitored system)

MultitaskingThis potent feature is unique toPower System Supervisor: Futura+’sdual digital ports access data storedon the monitors without stifling theresponse time for reporting exceptions.

Internet and Intranet AccessSince data is sent via TCP/IP,distribution systems at different facilities can be viewed through theInternet or an Intranet simultaneously. All data can be fire-wall protected.

Flexible CommunicationOptionsEven when an Ethernet system is notan option, Power System Supervisordoesn’t let you down. PSS also functions with traditional systemarchitectures:

• RS485 communication: PSS Lite isdesigned for low-cost industrial monitoring. This RS485-based system handles up to 32 devices.

• Dedicated telephone lines, radio ormicrowave communication: Atremote sites where there is noaccess to an Ethernet highway, PSScan use dedicated telephone lines, radio or microwave communication.

• Dial-out (nondedicated) phonelines: For remote sites where the system update speed is not critical,PSS makes use of an excellent, low-cost alternative. Simply configure EIG’s Modem Manager 1to dial out and report to PSS whenan alarm condition occurs. Thissaves considerably on the cost ofdedicated lines.

Piggyback Your LAN WithoutCompromising Its ResourcesBecause PSS’s distributed architectureoptimizes data transfer, the systemcan piggyback on existing LANs without sacrificing system resources.PSS typically requires less than 3% ofa network’s resources. No other system even comes close!

A “Serverless” SystemUnlike other systems, this distributedpeer-to-peer arrangement means thatno polling servers are needed totransfer massive amounts of data to acentral location. Since each EPU isassigned its own /IP address, it canbe accessed directly by any workstation on a network. Networktraffic is minimal: The “server” is usedonly for exception polling and optional data storage.

PSS’s design dramatically reduces theuse of network resources. Data istransferred only when it is requested. When alarm conditions arise, theEPUs automatically upload the data tothe master. Stored data is transferredto the server off-line, in bulk FTP fileformats.
