    About the Workshop

To realize the vision of the future smart electric grid, enhancements are required at various levels of

existing power grid operation and control practices including integration of phasor measurement units

(PMUs). PMUs provide synchronized measurements at high rates for enhanced wide area situational

awareness and decision support using new applications. High quality of synchrophasor measurements

is vital for most of these applications, especially for real time control. Implementation of such a system

requires integration of PMUs data for situational awareness, developing new applications for

synchrophasor data utilization, and integration into control center applications. This workshop is

focused on power system engineering aspects of synchrophasor measurements, advancement in

applications and use cases for integration of PMU data in the power grid control center. This workshop

will discuss the basics of PMUs, phasor estimation, need for PMU testing, certification, review of

possible applications, synchrophasors based voltage stability application and existing related

standards. In this workshop, use cases for integration of PMU data into control center operations will be

also discussed. This workshop is highly recommended for electric utility, vendors, technical managers,

smart grid engineers, students and faculty.

TopicsThis workshop provides a forum for discussing the latest findings in PMU Analytics. The topics to be

covered in more depth are the following:

    Power System Operation and Control

    Basics of PMUs,

    Phasor estimation,

Need for PMU testing and certification,

    PMU standards and compliance testing

Power System Operation and Control using Synchrophasors

    Synchrophasors based voltage stability application

    Review of other possible applications

Demo of tools to utilize PMU data

    About the Speaker

    Dr. Anurag K. Srivastava:

Dr. Anurag K Srivastava is the director of the Smart Grid Demonstration and

Research Investigation Lab (SGDRIL) within the Energy System Innovation Centre

(ESIC) and an associate professor of electric power engineering at Washington

State University. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the

Illinois Institute of Technology in 2005. He has worked as an assistant researchprofessor at Mississippi State University from 2005-2010, as a senior research

associate at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, and as a research

fellow at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. His research

interests include power system operation and control using synchrophasor data.

Dr. Srivastava is a senior member of the IEEE, chair of the IEEE Power & Energy

Societys (PES) student activities committee, co-chair of the micro grid working group, past-chair of the

IEEE PES career promotion subcommittee, and past vice-chair of the IEEE synchrophasor conformity

assessment program. He organized the first workshop on testing and validation of synchrophasors

device testing and applications. He is the recipient of the best paper award from the IEEE Industry

Applications Society and is working closely with a number of electric power companies. Dr. Srivastava

is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, an IEEE distinguished lecturer, and theauthor of more than 150 technical publications including a book on power system security.

National organization for applied research in power sector and also serves as an Independent

Laboratory for testing and certification of power equipment. CPRI is a member of STI (Short Circuit

Testing Liaison) of Europe and is accredited by M/s ASTA of UK. CPRI also provides consultancy

services on various facets of power sector. CPRI has expertise in the area of Simulation, Diagnostics,

System Analysis and Testing. CPRI laboratories have modern equipment needed for Power system

simulation, Short circuit testing, Diagnostics of equipment, Materials engineering, Seismic qualificationetc. CPRI has experienced faculty in different subjects of power sector with practical experience in their

areas of interest as well as extensive experience in presenting courses/seminars.

Over the period, CPRI officers have gained lot of practical knowledge concerning to testing and

operational problems of the industry. CPRI is a leading provider of Training and Continuing Education

to Utilities, PSUs across the country for the past 50 years. CPRI is continuously setting new standards

in training and continuing education from basic theoretical information to practical hands-on electrical

equipment training. CPRI courses have made substantial impact on the level of training and education

to India's electricity utilities, manufacturing companies, transmission and distribution companies. By

upgrading the occupational skills of technical workers, CPRI training courses have improved the career

path of many electrical personnel as well as contributed towards improvement in electricity efficiency,

plant productivity, and electrical system reliability and to the overall competitiveness of Indian industry.

About Smart Power & Energy System, Power Systems Division

Smart Power & Energy System (SP&ES) wing of Power Systems Division is doing research and

providing consultancy and system study for Smart Grid, Distribution Automation, SCADA System, Wide

Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC), and power systems for various utilities, industry

and other electrical/power engineering organizations. SP&ES wing is providing the consultancy services

for smart grid and SCADA implementation projects in various distribution companies of Karnataka,

Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana to name a few. SP&ES has Substation Automation lab which
