Over a million, custom blended, handmade bricks are being used in the restoration of Battersea Power Station. The Power Station is one of the largest brick buildings ever built and the repairs as part of its restoration naturally require a lot of bricks. But not just any bricks will do for such a project. The Power Station was built using special “Golden Brown Pressed” bricks from Cotswold works Northwick Brick and Tiles, founded by the World War I hero and art collector Captain E G Spencer-Churchill, a cousin of Winston Churchill and friend of the Power Station’s original architect Giles Gilbert Scott. The original bricks were made in imperial sizes which are no longer used and have weathered to various unique colours and shades in different parts of the Power Station building. To meet this unique requirement, Battersea Power Station, in partnership with Wandsworth Council and Historic England, ordered 1.3 million new bricks from specialist manufacturers Northcot Brick and Michelmersh Brick Holdings Group. Northcot Brick is a descendant of Spencer-Churchill’s firm and is still based at the same Gloucestershire quarry with access to the same Lower Jurassic and Middle Lias clay. These bricks are being used to restore parts of the Power Station built in the 1930s and 1940s. A third tailored blend of approximately 430,000 bricks are being used on the final parts of the building dating from the 1950s. These are being supplied by a second supplier, Blockleys of Telford in Shropshire, part of the Michelmersh Brick Holdings Group, again one of the original suppliers of bricks to the Power Station.
