Over a million, custom blended, handmade bricks are being used in the restoration of Battersea Power Station. The Power Stationis one of the largest brick buildings ever built and the repairs as part of its restoration naturally require a lot of bricks.

But not just any bricks will do for such a project. The Power Stationwas built using special “Golden Brown Pressed” bricks fromCotswold works Northwick Brick and Tiles, founded by the WorldWar I hero and art collector Captain E G Spencer-Churchill, acousin of Winston Churchill and friend of the Power Station’soriginal architect Giles Gilbert Scott.

The original bricks were made in imperial sizes which are nolonger used and have weathered to various unique colours andshades in different parts of the Power Station building.

To meet this unique requirement, Battersea Power Station, inpartnership with Wandsworth Council and Historic England,ordered 1.3 million new bricks from specialist manufacturersNorthcot Brick and Michelmersh Brick Holdings Group. NorthcotBrick is a descendant of Spencer-Churchill’s firm and is still basedat the same Gloucestershire quarry with access to the same LowerJurassic and Middle Lias clay. These bricks are being used to restoreparts of the Power Station built in the 1930s and 1940s.

A third tailored blend of approximately 430,000 bricks are beingused on the final parts of the building dating from the 1950s.These are being supplied by a second supplier, Blockleys of Telfordin Shropshire, part of the Michelmersh Brick Holdings Group,again one of the original suppliers of bricks to the Power Station.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATEConstruction work on Battersea Power Station continues to make excellent progress with over 130shops and restaurants, cinema, events spaces, Apple’s new London office campus and a uniquechimney lift due to open in 2021. The chimney lift beam is currently being installed in the NorthWest Chimney and the glass atrium has been put in place on top of the Boiler House, two majormilestones in the transformation of the building.

In 2021 the new high street Electric Boulevard will also open, as part of Phase 3 designed by FrankGehry and Norman Foster. The Foster & Gehry buildings are really taking shape with facadescurrently being installed. There are over 1,000 operatives working on the site every day to create abeautiful gateway to the new town centre.
