This summer’s theme is the POWER OF PLAYPlay can take many forms—from an organized baseball game, to a spontanous game of tag, or a competitive chess match. Play isn’t just for kids, we encourage residents of all ages to find a new way to get outside and play this summer.
We want to know how much time you spent playing, so on each page tell us how many minutes you spent on each challenge. The more play time the better!

Oak Park Conservatory 615 Garfield Street, Oak Park, IL
Your MissionHead over to the Elsie Jacobsen Discovery Garden at the Oak Park Conservatory. The design for the garden was drawn from nature’s four essential elements: light, water, air and earth.
Find the water feature, also known as the runnel, and get creative with your boat-building skills. Build your own water vessel using natural objects or things found in your home. When you’re finished, test its sea-worthiness with a float down the runnel!
Did you know? The Oak Park Conservatory is celebrating its 90th birthday this summer. The conservatory is open until 7pm on Thursdays to allow extra time to explore. The Discovery Garden is open 7 days a week, so stop by all summer to play in our natural areas and see what new plants are blooming.
Draw a picture of your boat or take a picture or and share it using #pdopPassport on social media.

ACTIVE MINUTES
Euclid Square Park 705 W. Fillmore Street, Oak Park, IL
Your MissionVisit the court at this park and play a game of pickleball or tennis, or make up your own game.
Play Pickleball. The rules are similar to tennis but the court is smaller and the net is lower. The red lines you see are the bound-ary lines. If the court is open, get out and play!
Pickleball is played with paddles that look like ping pong paddles and a perforated ball. Like tennis, pickleball can be played as doubles or singles.
To play:
1. A player uses an underhand serve to hit the ball. The ball must travel diagonally across the court to the receiving team. Players serve until they commit a fault, then the ball goes to the opposing team.
2. The receiving player/team returns the serve after one bounce. The volley continues until a point is scored or the serving team faults. Only the serving team can score a point.
3. Points are earned when the receiving team makes an error or fault such as: hitting the ball out of bounds, hitting the ball into the net or missing the ball.
4. Games are played until one team/player earns 11 points. Players must win by 2 points.
Find the complete, official rules at www.usapa.org.
Did you know? Pickleball was first played in the 1960’s on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle. It was named after the inventor’s dog, Pickles. The Park District has three other locations where you can play pickleball: Taylor Park, Barrie Center and Maple Park.

Lindberg Park 1151 N. Marion Street, Oak Park, IL
Lindberg Park is home to beautiful trial gardens full of native plants. Get in touch with the natural world by doing a Square Foot Discovery! To start, measure a four-foot piece of string. Pick an area of the trial gardens and use your string to make a square on the ground. Get down on your belly and observe the area closely from all angles. Draw pictures of everything you find such as leaves, moss, grass, dirt or insects in the square below.
Your Mission
The Power of Play Play Eye Spy with a friend at Lindberg Park. One player picks an object that they can see. The other player asks questions to help them guess the object. Can you stump your friend?
Take a picture or video and share it using #pdopPassport on social media.
Bring your string home and do a another discovery in your yard!

ACTIVE MINUTES
Taylor Park 400 W. Division Street, Oak Park, IL
Your MissionHead out to Taylor Park as the sun is setting and enjoy the park at night under the lights of the tennis courts. Make sure that you are with an adult when you go! There are so many activities that you can do in the dark: play flashlight tag, catch fireflies, or look for stars in the night sky. Here are the rules to a favorite childhood game:
Ghost in the GraveyardChoose one player to be the ghost and pick a home base. The ghost hides and the others try to find them. The first person who finds the hidden player yells “ghost in the graveyard!” and they are safe. The other players must make it back to home base before they are tagged by the ghost. If you are tagged you become the next ghost.
The Power of Play Make it glow! Add glow sticks to water bottles to make a set of glowing bowling pins. Or connect glow bracelets to make rings for a nightime ring toss. What other ideas can you come up with?
Take a picture or video and share it using #pdopPassport on social media.

Your MissionIt’s important to keep your body and your mind active over the summer. Head over to Randolph Park and find the game tables. Bring along your chess or checkers set and play a game outside. (Find the rules for checkers at www.itsyourturn.com)
No set of your own? Don’t worry! You can easily create a checkers set. All you need is 24 small items, 12 of 1 color and 12 of another color. You can use stones, coins, bottle caps, buttons or other items. Have fun by adding a design to your checker pieces.
The Power of Play You can find the rules for chess at www.chess.com or use the checkerboard and your game pieces to play Tic Tac Toe. The first person to get three across wins!

ACTIVE MINUTES
Your MissionMaple Park is one the park district’s longest parks. Take advantage of all that open space by playing tag. There are many different types of tag. Here’s a few ideas:
Hot Dog Tag One person is designated as “it”. When a player is tagged, he or she must lay flat on the ground with hands by their side and legs together, as if they were a hot dog. To get back into the game, two free players need to lie on either side of the “hot dog” to form the buns. The person who is “it” cannot tag any of the three play-ers completing the hot dog, as they are allowed to join back in.
Freeze Tag One person is designated as “it”. When a player is tagged, he or she stands still with their legs wide apart. To be allowed back into the action, another player must crawl through the “frozen” partici-pant’s legs without getting tagged themselves. The game finishes when all players are tagged and “frozen.”
Write the rules to your favorite game of tag below:
The Power of Play We think the most popular game played in our parks and playgrounds is Hot Lava. Have you ever played this? Take our poll:
Maple Park 1105 S. Maple Ave., Oak Park, IL
Yes. I have played Hot Lava. Obviously.
No way. There are no volcanoes in Oak Park!

Longfellow Park 610 S. Ridgeland Ave., Oak Park, IL
Your MissionLongfellow Park is home to the only full-court basketball area in Oak Park. Spend some time on the court playing basketball. Not enough people to play? Many other games can be enjoyed on a basketball court like HORSE and Knock-out. Once you’re done playing basketball cool off in the water of the splash pad!
How to play HORSE HORSE is like Simon Says, but with a basketball. To begin, pick a player to go first. That player gets to do anything they want be-fore shooting. If they want to spin around 5 times and then hop up and down before shooting, they can do it. They make the rules! If they make their shot, the other players have to do the exact same thing. But if they miss, the next player gets to make up their own wacky shot for the others to try. Any player that can’t make the first person’s shot gets the letter H. Everyone keeps playing the game and making up crazy shots until someone misses enough times to spell out the word HORSE. The player who does not spell HORSE is the winner!
How to play Knock-out Every player gets into a single line. The first two players have a basketball. Players must shoot until they score. If the person behind you scores before you, you’re out. If you score before the player behind you, join the end of the line and take another turn.
The Power of Play Play 500. Everyone stands in a large circle around the person holding the ball. The thrower tosses the ball into the air and calls out a num-ber from 50 to 500. That is the number of points given to the person who catches the ball, or the number of points a person who tries to catch the ball, but drops, loses. The player with the most points wins.
