Think On These ThingsBy Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

So Soon After the BlessingAnd immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. ~Mark 1:12

The wilderness is not the place we want to be so soon after a blessing. We expect to stay on the mountain.

But did not the disciples meet the lunatic son they could not cure immediately after their glorious moment on the mountain? Why could they not stay? They wanted to know. Why do we have to come back down so soon?

Is not the mountain a momentary experience? Just long enough to catch a glimpse of who God really is. And then, the veil descends again. And here we are, at the foot of the mountain, faced with seemingly insurmountable problems, relentless requests for what we cannot deliver, pressure to perform, crooked paths and rough places.

You pay one bill and the next deadline is upon you. You bail one child out of trouble and the next one calls. You settle into one job and get a pink slip the next day.

Immediately comes too soon.

But God is faithful. He would not have you settle into the blessing. For the blessing is not the final destination. “Like Him” … is where He is leading you. You shall be like Him for you shall see Him as He is. God has to re-capture your attention immediately after the blessing so that your focus is always on Him and not the blessing.

After He identifies you, “This is my Son,” away you go to experience Him in the wilderness, in dry places, around the well, in the desert, in Gethsemane, at Calvary. For you, it happens too soon. But to God the immediacy of it all shows His incomparable, undeniable love for you.

There is more! There is so much more. This blessing is not your stopping point. Beyond the blessing is the joy the Lord, the strength of the eagle, the song of the Lamb. Beyond the blessing is God Himself.

The disciples could not stay on the mountain and help the lunatic son. Jesus could not stay on the banks of the Jordan and receive the power of the Holy Spirit. You cannot avoid the darkness and expect to help those who have no light. You cannot be strong for others until you have acknowledged your own weaknesses.

Be thankful for the immediacy of God. There are no wasted moments. There is no time to think about the choices you do not have. Soon after the high, you must experience the lows – or what’s the journey for?

To be made useful, you must face the battle so soon after the blessing.
