Think On These ThingsBy Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
No Part to Play
How shall this be?Luke 1:34
Sometimes God will let it appear that your prayers, asking, and waiting are in vain.
You ask God to turn things around. Nothing.
You ask God to make things happen. Nothing.
You ask God to make it stop. Nothing.
God will lead you through what seems like a series of events, exercises, activities, or along paths that lead to nothing, no results, no answers, no place. When you stop, it looks like you are back where you started, treading water, walking in place, going nowhere.
You give up. You stop asking. You stop praying. You stop waiting.
And then, God will make things happen. He will make things happen after you have given up, wondered why, stopped asking, stopped praying, and stopped waiting.
He will turn things around. He will do it. He will make it stop.
God will make things happen to demonstrate that He alone is God. And that we have no part to play in making any of it happen. We have no part to play in bringing any of it to pass.
When the power of the Highest is in operation, we have no part to play.

BALTIMORE, MD -- It is with great pleasure that the PowerMagazine publisher and staff extends a hearty congratulations and welcome to Dr. Louis-Charles Harvey who was recently appointed to serve as Presiding Elder of the Capitol District of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church as we go forward into 2015. While the magazine will follow up with a personal interview in the new year, it is important for us to notethat Dr. Harvey’s esteemed appointment was made after the retirement of Presiding Elder Emeritas Goodwin Douglas.

“But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 10:33)
RIVERDALE PARK, MARYLAND — In Luke 22: 34, Jesus Christ told Peter that he would deny him three times. In Matthew 26: 69-70, Matthew 26: 71-72, and Matthew 26: 73-75 Peter did indeed prove Jesus’ prophetic statement true. Peter was one of Christ original 12 disciples and had traveled extensively with the Lord and heard countless times, first-hand, His beliefs and teachings. Yet when faced with questions as to whether Peter was one of God’s men, three times, Peter vehemently denied knowing Him. It is not an indication that Peter was disloyal as it was a testament to his humanistic side that feared the reprisal from man for admitting his allegiance to Christ. He stood to lose his life for Christ’s sake.
So now, as the Christmas holiday season is in full swing, where do people of faith stand when it comes to the holiday celebrations? Will God’s people fall into the abyss of commercialism that is so
prevalent during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons? Instead, will people of faith stand tall for the Lord and proclaim the real reason for the season? Will people of faith remind the world that Christ was born to save their lives?
The world and the people who are reluctant to profess openly the Lord as their Savior, get caught up in who can afford such-and-such gift or who can throw the best party—and they forget to give of themselves. God’s intense love for us prompted Him to give His Son, the greatest gift ever given, that we may enjoy an abundant, God-kind of life. As people of faith, we must shift our focus from decorating and shopping, and instead place it on the season’s true meaning by sharing the gift of Jesus with others.
As people of faith, we often lose sight that the world is watching us. It is our responsibility to not just speak the gospel’s truths but to live the gospels in our day-to-day lives. While there are many ways to proclaim the glory of the Lord during the Christmas holiday,

there are perhaps three basic areas where people of faith can drive home their commitment in celebrating the gift of Christ in our lives. Likewise, in doing so, this would be a perfect time for people of faith to invite friends and family to go along, especially if they don’t truly understand Christ’s role in our lives.
The first area where people of faith can focus on is the simple act of sitting down with your family, making sure especially your family’s youth are involved, and read the account of Jesus’ birth in Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:1-12, and Luke 2:1-20. Let this be the foundation for everything you do during this season.
The second area where people of faith can focus on is to actually celebrate the Savior’s birth by attending Christmas Eve or Christmas Day services at your local church. The scriptures urge people of faith to go to church as a visible, tangible expression of our love and worship toward God. It is where we can gather with other believers to publicly bear witness of our faith and trust in God, something that is required of all Christians (Matt. 10:32-33).
The third area where people of faith can focus on is to instill the “it’s better to give than to receive” attitude into your children by volunteering at homeless shelters. Also, allow your spirit of giving to extend to the community as a whole by getting involved in food drives, putting together gift baskets of food for families in need that you may know, and get friends and families to purchase “new” coats, clothes and shoes to give to families in need. And when you deliver these items to families, take the time to sit and talk with them to get a feel for where they are in their relationship with the Lord, pray with them and offer to make arrangements to get them to church.
Surely there are other expressions of caring that can be instituted but if one starts with these three basic suggestions, you are well on your way to proclaiming the joy of Christmas by allowing the world to see the Christ in you. And most importantly, you have assured yourself you have not denied the Lord before man.

Upon hearing the decision handed down by the grand jury in the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson on Tuesday, November 24 (2014), I had the same sort of sickened grief in my stomach that I felt when I heard the news that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated when I was a kid growing up in Virginia at the age of 10-years-old (1968). It just didn’t seem right.
The reasonable man within me hoped that the protesters in Ferguson would be wise and participate in peaceful protest so that another life is not snuffed out.
The carnal man within me was trying to come to terms that the burning of buildings and looting was part of the process. Someone had to pay … even if it meant that the seemingly innocent business owners who never even pulled a trigger suffered the most.
But the spiritual man within me could only think to pray. The Lord’s spirit asked: “What would Jesus do? How would Jesus handle these conflicted feelings dwelling deep within my soul?”
Certainly if anyone knew what it meant to be at the brunt of a hatred that burned so deeply within His enemies, that it led to His being nailed to a cross and eventual death, it was our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
And even though Christ knew this hatred and efforts to kill Him wasjust as pre-destined as it was inevitable, He was still able to share in His own prophetic solution, how to deal with those who hate and persecute us as demonstrated in Matthew 5: 43-44.Jesus dealt with a formidable foe in the Sanhedrin, the ruling body of His day, that was comprised primarily of the Sadducees and Pharisees.
People of faith must let love prevail in dealing with the ferguson ShootingBy Samuel Williams, Jr.
Matthew 5: 43-44: ,and “You have heard that it had been said: You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and perscute you”

Seemingly, in this 21st century, young black men face a foe just aspowerful, just as dangerous. Their alleged enemy is the embodiment of men in law enforcement who instead of using a cross to exact death, sent our youth to their grave by brandishing loaded firearms whose bullets have taken way too many lives of young black youth across our nation.
But did Jesus run from His enemies? Not at all. He faced them and challenged their moral consciousness and it infuriated them so much, they executed him. And through scripture, Christ set the tone for people of faith to seek peaceful solutions amidst a world of hate and retaliation.
In Matthew 5: 38-39 Christ said: “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” In John 8: 7, when the woman who was caught in an adulterous act spurred the people to engage in a violent solution by attempting to stone her, Christ interceded: When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.” So it stands to reason that before we condemn those in law enforcement, we need to first examine ourselves as people of faith and make sure we stand upright before the Lord.
God will fight for the Brown family and the best we can do is pray for them, asking God to exact the correct endgame regarding the Ferguson police department. Most certainly, with the all of the protest initiated nationwide in protest of the heinous shooting, the government will inevitably launch a federal investigation. There is also a clear indication that the Brown family will file a civil lawsuit against the officer and Ferguson police department as is their right according to the law of the land.
As people of faith, we must remember, revenge and hatred are in direct contrast of the grace, mercy and love that were exemplified as worthy virtues of follower of Christ who practiced such. We must alwaysremember, God always prevails in the end.

Ann W. Kinard “To God Be The Glory”
THE CHURCH TEA
I never considered the importance of the sound man until I attended a concert recently featuring Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Evelyn Champagne King, Blue Magic & The Delphonics. I grew up attending the Uptown theater located near downtown Philly and was privileged to enjoy many acts that originated from Philly.
The Delphonics had so many hits like “La-La” (“Means I Love You”), “I’m Sorry” & “Didn’t I” (Blow your mind this time”). Why they decided not to sing their old standards, I’ll never know. A few rowdy peoplein the audience started shouting for a refund. Embarrassing!
However, Ms. Evelyn Champagne King pulled the show together as a talented songstress and dancer.
Lastly, Harold Melvins’ Blue Notes & Blue Magic were wonderful. Reminiscent of impeccable dressed men performing synchronized dancesteps who sang in perfect harmony about love. If the sound system had been in better operational condition, no doubt,
the performance would have been perfect. However, the quality of the singers voices, was interrupted by faulty equipment.
Perhaps a pre-concert sound check could have prevented this mishap. This made me think that perhaps each of us, as Christians, are required to give our faith a sound check. Let people know you love the Lord.
When you’re needed to perform for the Lord, will your faith waiver in the sound of your voice. True Christians know how to say “I’m sorry” and “I love you.” For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:20). Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy those concerts and Christmas parties you attend this year. And don’t forget to listen to the live stream of yours truly and Rev. William Wingo on WOLB each Friday from 12:00noon to 1:00 pm.
