POWER FACTOR CORRECTION HOW DOES IT AFFECT MY BUSINESS? A poor power factor (less than 0.95 PF) may cause a tariff to be charged on your power bill, or an excess of kVA peak demand or both. It will increase your overall current loading and reduce spare capacity in your transformer, cables and electrical switchgear. WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT THIS? By introducing Capacitors into the circuit, the Capacitive reactive power (in kVAr) balances the inductive reactive power to bring the Apparent power (kVA) closer to the true power (kW), the resultant being a PF of 0.95 or better or kW = kVA. This process is called Power Factor Correction and may take the form of individualised capacitors or an Automatic Power Factor Correction Unit (APFCU) depending on circuit requirements. For overloaded sites Power Factor Correction is one of the quickest ways to reduce load and may help prevent costly infrastructure upgrades. WWW.PDC.CO.NZ PDC can partner with you to analyse, specify and supply the correct PFC unit for each unique site to remove the Power Factor tarriffs and reduce the kVA peak demand. Available system capacity is increased and costly electrical infrastructure upgrades can be avoided. Power Factor is the ratio of true power used (kW) to the apparent power (kVA) used in an electrical circuit. A poor power factor (0.95 PF or less) is caused when a circuit has a high level of inductive loads (predominantly electric motors) causing the circuit voltage and current waveforms to be out of phase and the resultant using more apparent power than is needed. POWER FACTOR CORRECTION

HOW DOES IT AFFECT MY BUSINESS?

PDC can partner with you to analyse, specify and supply the correct PFC unit for each unique site to remove the Power Factor tarriffs and reduce the kVA peak demand.
