Power Delivery

Today’s changing energy landscape has created a need for forward-thinking power grid designs that can effortlessly integrate everything from electric vehicles to solar roads and more.

Forward-thinking Grid Design

The SNC-Lavalin Advantage

With over a century of experience in the power business, we can help our clients deal with the challenges of aging infrastructure, plan for grid integration and build assets to meet the rising energy needs of the 21st century consumer.

We provide complete end-to end solutions for your projects, from early identification studies, to front-end engineering, specifications and consulting services.

Tier-1 expertise

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)

We are one of the few international companies that specialize in HVDC. Active in the field since the late ‘60s, our project portfolio extends to every continent.

We pioneered the development and implementation of multi-terminal HVDC technology with one of the world’s first large-scale multi-terminal HVDC projects in 1986, and have been active ever since in all aspects of grid innovation.

Not only were we recently commissioned to work on a large HVDC interconnection in Western Canada, we also provided in-depth engineering services on another large-scale HVDC interconnection in Eastern Canada (Maritimes) as the prime EPC contractor.

> VSC technologies

> Overhead bulk transfer applications

> Undersea/underground applications

> Back-to-back applications

> Multi-terminal HVDC

> DC voltages up to 600 kV

Our HVDC capabilities include:

> Engineering

> Procurement

> Construction

> Planning

> Studies

> Training programs

> Asset management

> Operations & maintenance

> Needs identification

> Load flow and stability studies

> Technology selection

> Rating optimization

> Functional and detailed specifications

> Consulting and full EPC services

Our expertise includes the full family of FACTS devices such as static VAR compensators (SVCs), STATCOMs and series compensation.

Key Projects

We carried out engineering,

procurement and construction

services (EPC) on two 1000-MW,

500-kV monopole HVDC converter

stations (with STATCOM on one

facility) located in Alberta, Canada.

It also required putting up 995

towers and 500 kV and 240 kV AC

switchyards to establish a +/-500-kV

HVDC link that was 350 km (217

mi) long.

Western Alberta Transmission Line Canada

This was an EPCM contract that required 1,500 km of ± 350-kV HVDC and 315-kV HVAC transmission lines, 394 km of electrode lines with one shoreline pond electrode station, and seven air-insulated converter and transition substations. Lower Churchill

Canada

Our expertise in 230-kV AC switchyard design, construction, procurement and commissioning for hydroelectric power facilities will improve the reliability and operational flexibility of the HVDC system for Manitoba Hydro’s Keewatinohk’s project.

Keewatinohk 230kV Switchyard Canada

By replacing the aging 69/13.8-kV substation and reconfiguring the loads for three substations, we helped increase the reliability of the Baytown petroleum and petrochemical complex, as well as reduce the impact of a potential substation failure.

ExxonMobil Substation 67 U.S.A

As the owner’s engineer, we provided services for the new 177-km long, ±150-kV, 220-MW underground HVDC transmission line, converter stations and HVAC substations.

Murraylink HVDC Interconnection Australia

We acted as the owner’s engineer to connect a ± 400-kV HVDC system to six countries with six GIS substations. This project included 1,000 km of DC lines with a three-terminal HVDC line and 45 km of submarine cables.

Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Persian Gulf

Flexible Alternate Current Transmission Systems (FACTS)

Our end-to-end solutions in flexible alternating current transmission systems optimize grid performance.

Our FACTS capabilities include: Why SNC-Lavalin?

These services support the surrounding transmission infrastructure, including incoming transmission lines, interconnecting alternate current substations, as well as complete protection and control (P&C), SCADA and telecommunications interfaces.
