Coming in Fall 2020 on openvault.wgbh.org:The Linda and Andrew Egendorf Masterpiece Theatre Alistair Cooke Collection

Coming TogetherA s work is scheduled to begin on a Boston Common

memorial honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King, we are reminded that they met in our city as students and became partners for life in the civil rights movement.

In Legacy of Love (page 13), Boston-based filmmaker Roberto Mighty recounts the story of how the couple fell in love in the 1950s when he was studying at Boston University and she was at the New England Conservatory of Music. The film, narrated by the Rev. Liz Walker, fea-tures never-before-seen inter-views with living witnesses, interactive storytelling, immersive new media, and graphic animation all docu-menting the Kings’ journey together toward racial justice.

Dr. King went on to make history in August 1963, when he gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington. This month we present two other films that commemorate August anniversaries that sadly haunt our nation. On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, was killed by a white police officer, sparking protests in Ferguson, Missouri. And on August 12, 2017, an avowed white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of people who had been peacefully protesting in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Whose Streets? from POV (page 13) describes how a community reached a breaking point following Brown’s death and joined together to work for racial justice. Charlottesville (page 13) grapples with the difficult question of how acts spurred by hate can still happen in modern America.

As the country’s largest producer of public media programs, we have a responsibility to unequivocally stand against racism and inequity. Last month, WGBH launched a multiplatform effort called The State of Race, in partnership with the NAACP Boston chapter and The Boston Globe, to explore issues affecting Black communities in Massachusetts (see back cover). We are also dedicating additional hours of programs every Sunday evening to offer an even wider range of films about experiences of Black Americans.

Black lives matter. We affirm that statement with a set of commitments (wgbh.org/racism) that ensure that we have more colleagues of color among those creating our programs. Increasing their voice and visibility will enable public media to more equitably serve our communities.

We know that there is still much more we can—and must—do to advance understanding, tolerance and equality. Thank you for standing with us.

Jon Abbott

Independent Lens/Won’t You Be My Neighbor? One of the most celebrated theatrical releases of 2018, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, from Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville, takes an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Fred Rogers. The documentary tells the story of a soft-spoken minister, puppeteer, writer and producer

whose show was beamed daily into homes across America for more than 30 years. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Rogers and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues in a simple, direct fashion. Rogers’ career represented a sustained attempt to present a coherent, beneficent view of how television could be used as a posi-tive force in society. There hadn’t been

anything like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on television before, and there hasn’t been since. This intimate portrait goes beyond zip-up cardigans and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

All in the FamilyThree generations of the Phadke family live together in their home in Mumbai. When the youngest daughter turns the camera toward her family, the personal becomes political as power structures within the family become visible—and eventually unravel. Cruel and comic in equal measure, the film examines the vagaries of affection across gen-

erations, tied together by some-thing stranger than love. Don’t miss this engaging film about what it’s like to be an adult child living with all your family, especially in close quarters.POV/About Love Mon, 8/10 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Ways to Tune In World

Digital: 2.2 RCN: 94Comcast: 956 Cox: 807FiOS: 473 Charter: 181

Bringing You the WorldWorld Channel tells stories that humanize complex issues. World shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming that help us understand conflicts, movements and cultures

that may be distinct from our own. World’s original content offers a national platform to filmmakers examining issues too often ignored by mainstream media. These emerging and master filmmakers spotlight a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere. World has won a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and numerous national honors—including an RTNDA Kaleidoscope Award, a Media for a Just Society Award, two Lesbian and Gay Journalist Awards, a Gracie and an Asian American Journalists Award. Carried by 174 partner stations in markets representing almost 72% of US TV households, World can also be experienced via WorldChannel.org and social media platforms. The World Channel theme for August is nature and the environment.

Improving Public SpacesExplore the remarkable life and career of Beatrix Farrand, America’s first woman landscape architect responsible for some of the most celebrated gardens in the nation. Born in New York City, she studied under the tutelage of Charles Sprague Sargent, director of Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. Although she was best known for designing gardens for

the rich and powerful—including J.P. Morgan and President Woodrow Wilson—Farrand also was a strong advocate of creating natural spaces for the public to make people’s lives better.Beatrix Farrand’s American LandscapesTue, 8/4 at 7pm

Chinese Act of DefianceMost Americans might say that World War II began when the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. But in China, the war started on Aug. 13, 1937, when the National Revolutionary Army fought the Japanese military at the Battle of Shanghai. Produced by Emmy Award-winning Producer/Director Bill Einreinhofer, this documentary incorporates little-seen footage from film libraries around the world. Hear original interviews from men and women who experienced firsthand China’s major act of defiance.Shanghai 1937: Where World War II Began Wed, 8/5 at 7pm

Nature’s NewbornsFollow six baby animals from across the globe as they experience joy and hardship, confront near-daily adversi-ties and navigate their surroundings in their first year of life. Witness how wildlife camera operators keep pace with these tiny creatures as they explore the discoveries and dangers of their natural habitats. From their first

experiences with their mothers to their early trials of independence, get a close-up view of what it’s like to survive and thrive in the wild. Watch all three one-hour episodes back to back!Animal Babies: First Year on Earth Sun, 8/9 from 9pm to 12am

Free Speech AdvocateAlternately loved and reviled, Eugene Victor Debs was a passionate labor leader and a pro-gressive political figure during a time of nation-wide change. In 1894, he led the Pullman Strike and helped establish the Socialist Party in America. When he spoke out against US involvement in World War I, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act. From his cell, he ran for president, garnering nearly a million votes and sparking a national conversation about the right to free speech. Narrated by actor Danny Glover. The Revolutionist: Eugene V. Transportation Trailblazer In the early 20th century, thrill-seeking adventurer Augustus Post helped steer America through a revolution in transportation. He bought the first motor car in New York City, became the 13th man to fly an airplane in the US, and once held the world distance record in an air balloon. Using anima-tion and radio broadcast re-enactments, The Unforgettable Augustus Post examines Post’s life through his indomitable imagination and zeal to create a new world in which anyone could be an explorer. The Unforgettable Augustus Post Mon, 8/31 at 9pm

World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

Journalists Earn Top HonorsW GBH News programs and reporters won top journalistic honors during

the 2020 awards season. Basic Black, hosted by Callie Crossley, received the

prestigious 2020 Governors’ Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Boston/New England Chapter. The award pays tribute to the program’s more than 50 years of covering the interests of people of color.

WGBH News also won five 2020 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including in the Overall Excellence and

Multimedia categories: • Digital Managing Editor Laura Colarusso and Senior Digital Producer Emily Judem were recognized for Excellence in Innovation for “The Original Old Boys Club,” a report that found Massachusetts lagging when it comes to electing women to political offices. WGBH News was also recognized in the Multimedia category.

• Reporter Gabrielle Emanuel won the award for Feature Reporting for an intimate reflection of Hillary and Julie Goodridge, the face of the same-sex marriage movement in Massachusetts. Emanuel also won in the Hard News category for covering the sale of local contaminated bottled water.

“We’re especially proud of the Overall Excellence award,” said Kate Zachry, news director of WGBH News. “Our entire team delivers stories and analysis across multiple platforms every day. The award showcases that consistent team effort.”

In the Human Dignity category of the 2020 Gabriel Awards, WGBH News won for “Caste In America,” a four-part series examining the discrimination Indian immigrants face in the US. Senior Investigative Reporter Phillip Martin conceived of and produced the series in collaboration with The World and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

New Leadership for WGBH NewsFollowing a nationwide search, Pam Johnston has been named general manager for news at WGBH. An award-winning multimedia strategist and accom-plished local news leader, Johnston served as the senior director of strategy and audience for Frontline before taking the reins of WGBH News on July 1.

Johnston succeeds Phil Redo, who retired in June following a decade of leadership at WGBH.

Jazz InnovatorCharlie Haden turned the jazz world on its head in the late 1950s when he revolutionized the har-monic concept of bass playing. His innovations as an original member of the groundbreaking Ornette Coleman Quartet freed jazz bassists to improvise in ways never attempted before. Host Eric Jackson pays tribute to the jazz master 50 years after he first interviewed him for the first time.Sun, 8/9 at 9pm

For the Love of MusicBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

N ow more than ever, music is the remedy for what ails us. During this pandemic, the WCRB audience continues to let us know how important

the music and the people who play the music are to them. Please know that, especially in these times of separation, we have genuinely appreciated hear-ing from you.

One of the great losses this season has been the absence of live music. While performers and audience members mourn that magical connection that takes place when they are in the same room, we are doing everything we can to fill the void. To that end, in August we will continue our well-received Boston Symphony Orchestra mini-festivals with three more weeks of great works in great performances weekdays at 8pm.

We saved the best for last. The final week of the series features the six-part celebration of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Every night that week, WCRB will present a performance of a choral masterwork taken from broadcasts from the past 30 years. These are seminal works, but more important, they reveal the power of many voices raised in song. That is a sound that will touch your heart and lift your spirits. Those are the types of performances that make what we do even more meaningful.

Have a safe end of summer, and listen to the beauty of great music!

Cape, Coast and Islands NPR® Station

For Becton, WCAI was an opportunity to extend public media across the state at a time when commercial news outlets were downsizing. And, he says, the experience has been all he imagined and more. “WCAI has been a great success—originating superb and award-winning programming,” he says. “I’m particularly pleased with the expanded coverage of environmental issues, which are more and more important.”

Allison, who also runs Atlantic Public Media where he co-produces The Moth Radio Hour and podcast, says that local flavor is invaluable. “Public radio stations like ours encourage everybody to share their own stories, and there’s no substitute for that,” he says. “We’re dedicated to opening the broad-cast to marginalized groups and to stories that are out of the mainstream.” When WCAI hit the airwaves, it’s no coincidence that the first word he spoke as host was “Listen.”

WCAI’s purpose has always been to create a crossroads where people can meet and gather, and even create change, he says. “That is perhaps a lofty goal for a mere radio signal,” he says. “But public media has a singular ability to span boundaries to bring people together.”

W hen public radio producer Jay Allison moved to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, 35 years ago, he was well into a successful career in

public media with plans to continue his work for NPR. But as he worked alongside the Woods Hole

Oceanographic Institution and other world-class marine laboratories, he had a eureka moment. “This town is full of laboratories—maybe we could create a radio station that functions like a laboratory and tries out new ideas,” he says.

His plan to launch a Cape-based radio station was partly selfish because the signal from WGBH

would drift in and out, he says. The plan gained momentum in 1992, when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting identified the Cape, Coast and Islands as underserved because the region lacked its own public radio service.

Tapping into his professional networks, Allison reached out to WGBH in 2000 for its help in starting a new public media station on the Cape. This month, that station—WCAI—celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Allison says he is forever grateful for the excitement and generosity of then-CEO Henry Becton, Operations Director John Voci, and Vice President and General Manager for WGBH Radio and Television Marita Rivero.
