Welcome to the new edition of the CIB students’ Chapter Newsletter! The Newsletter offers a window into the activities and achievement of our postgraduate students in our remarkable School of the Built Environment.
The School of the Built Environment is a place where we explore all products & processes of human creation everywhere; providing context for all human endeavours: Products; Interiors, Structures, landscapes, Cities, Regions and Earth. Our CIB students’ chapter continues to develop ideas that make a difference in our built environment; think about interaction with the construction industry, information and construction technologies, and human needs and perceptions.
Our 900 postgraduate and 200 Ph.D. students together with highly qualified staff bring to the School a depth and range of multi-‐disciplinary international industrial experience unmatched by any other Built Environment Schools. Topics that stretch further the frontier of architecture, construction, property and
real estate, Quantity and Building Surveying, BIM technologies, construction laws, energy studies, inclusive design and many others.
Established in 2001, our CIB students’ chapter is one of the oldest continuously operating CIB chapter in the World, but its greatest tradition is its commitment to support our students through social events as well as advance their academic skills and links to the industry.
The CIB Student Chapter Committee The Salford CIB Student Chapter aims to enhance postgraduate’s students' skills, particularly in regards to international collaboration and information exchange concerning research and innovation in the built environment.

I won the competition for the CIB world congress in December, 2015 and attended the CIB world congress 2016 between 30th of May and the 3rd of June in Tampere, Finland.
I made a conference presentation and also attended a CIB student chapter event on the 1st of June. During the CIB student chapter event, I made contact with the co-‐ordinator for the CIB student chapter, Prof. Francis Wong.

The recent mock viva was a great success and was aimed at looking at questions that are asked during a typical viva. Many thanks to Balqaeis (pictured above) for agreeing to undergo the Mock Viva, and Prof Jason Underwood and Dr. Udaya Kulatunga for chairing the session and giving advice on effective approaches to assessments.
Thank you to all the students that have volunteered to participate and the staff members who chaired the sessions. If you would like to get involved please contact CIB Student Chapter President.
Oluwatoyin Aturamu presented her report for the mock session and she received excellent feedback from David Baldy and Dr. Chaminda Pathirage.
Mock sessions for the Interim Assessment, Internal Evaluation and Viva have been arranged by the CIB student chapter as part of the Work in Progress sessions.
The mock sessions are a fantastic opportunity for PhD students at all levels to get a better understanding of what to expect in assessments. The sessions are also available for distance learning students via collaborate.

MAPS LED research project
The School of the Built Environment (SoBE) at the University of Salford offers financial support to PhD students in order to allow them to carry out field work in the USA (Boston, Massachusetts, San Diego, California) associated with the Multidisciplinary Approach to Planning of Specialization Strategies (S3) to enhance Local Economic Development (MAPS-‐LED) research programme.
PhD students can either be already enrolled in a SoBE PhD programme for no longer than 1 year as at 1st April 2017, or in the process of applying for a position as a PhD student at the SoBE through the ordinary process. Guidance on how to apply can be found on the School of the Built Environment webpage: http://www.salford.ac.uk/built-‐environment/research/postgraduate-‐research/phd-‐opportunities/maps-‐led-‐research-‐project.
All postgraduate researchers in the school of the Built Environment were invited to take part in a Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition organized by the CIB student Chapter. 3MT is a ‘research pitch’, which compresses your research interests and motivation into 180 seconds, and communicates this to an audience outside of your immediate specialism.
The presentations were judged based on comprehension, engagement and communication. Many thanks to Prof Les Ruddock and David Baldry who agreed to be in the judging panel. Congratulations to Loveline Obi who emerged the winner of the SOBE competition. Temitope Omotayo was the first runner up. The winners won £50 and £25 amazon vouchers respectively.
Congratulations to…
Sajedeh Mollasalehi presented a poster (and paper) entitled "Development of an Experimental Waste Framework Based on BIM/Lean Concept in Construction Design" based on her MSc. BIM & Integrated Design dissertation (which she has continued on to PhD) at the 24th Annual Conference of the International Group for Lean Construction in Boston, Massachusetts, USA which took place July 20-‐22, 2016. Her poster has been recognized by the attendees of IGLC 2016 as the Best Poster Presentation. In addition, at the recent graduation dinner she was also awarded the Autodesk and 3d Connexion Prize for the Best MSc Dissertation in BIM & Integrated Design.

UPCOMING EVENTS
• Social Events: o
• Mock Sessions
International Food Festival The International Food Festival took place on the 24th of May 2016 at the Old Fire Station. It was a successful and well attended event with PhD students representing a number of countries.
The event was opened by the CIB president and followed by a very interesting presentation by David Baldry on “All things BRITISH”. There were presentations on diverse cultures given by selected international students along with a fun quiz on international facts. Academic staff got involved by playing charades (guessing game) and showed us some great acting and dancing skills.
There was plenty of opportunity to sample tasty food from all over the globe. A big thank you to everyone who brought food.
