25 JUL: It was very soothing to see such a “Sea of Blue” interested in launching Mundy-Beck Post 9-1-1 to the next level. It is always a pleasure and enlightening experience when the installing officer 5th District Past Commander Samuel L. Perry visits our Post. Past Commander Perry stressed the importance of continued support from the members for success in the future endeavors with the new Post Officers.
Commander Kareem A. Flournoy stated that he has been given the responsibility of running the Post for the next year and he is going to operate openly and keep true to the values of the American Legion and its integrity. He also stated that he appreciates the opportunity and the support of the guests: 5th District Commander; Past 5th District Commander; Posts 29, 70,145, 264, 291; Auxiliary Units 70, 296; Old National Cruisers; “The Mission Continues” 1st Service Platoon; family and friends. He stated that he is also prepared for the great things Post 9-1-1 membership will be doing in the future.

30 JUL: Commander Flournoy (right), reached out to The Mission Continues (TMC) Atlanta 1st Service Platoon leader Eduardo Lopez (left) in reference to a mutual partnership to help veterans. Mr.
Lopez invited Post 9-1-1 and members of the “Wounded Warrior Project” (WWP) to their Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO)-Feed the Hungry service project. TMC provided freshly made roast beef, ham, and turkey sandwiches, chips, cookies, water, and juice. Post 9-1-1 was able to assist the veterans with bags of assorted toiletry items such as soap, male face cream, shea butter lotion, band aids, shampoo, hair
conditioner, disposable heating pads, insect repellant, donated clothes, and two pairs of new shoes. Post 9-1-1 served 42 veterans and left the VEO for future distribution to the veterans in need; 6 boxes of prepared toiletry bags (60 bags), 200 individual bars of soap, 24 containers of shea butter lotion, and 24 packs of disposable heating pads. Kudos goes out to our buddies for charging forward through the rain and their support: Commander Flournoy, Finance Officer Kimia Flournoy, Adjutant Teresa Pollard, Historian Tracy Smith, Buddy Mitzi Blount, and Buddy Philip Robert, Jr. Again, thank you for a job well done and for representing the Post during the new partnership to help our veterans!

Greeting Legionnaires,
I would like to again thank you for
selecting me as your Commander and
for all the great things we’ll accomplish
together this year. As I stated during
the installation, you have given me a
great responsibility and we are going
to operate openly and keep true to the
values of the American Legion and its
integrity.
My focus will be partnerships that
will help us to achieve success in the
Four Pillars of the American Legion and
growing an active membership base by
implementing programs/events that
are enjoyable for all members. We are
already charging forward with items
that will help our Post be known
throughout the Department of
Georgia, 5th District, and our
community with a new Facebook page,
website, and newsletter. These are
great tools along with the standard
Legion material to use when recruiting
new members and making new
community contacts. Let us portray
the pride we have in Mundy-Beck Post
9-1-1 from the inside - out!

incoming Officers for accepting the responsibility of being leaders. Senior Vice-Commander Jackson stated that he was proud to see the “Sea of Blue” increase in numbers and for their pride in the Post. Past Senior Vice-Commander Jackson also thanked the membership for their support. Both Past Commander Ogletree and Past Senior Vice-Commander Jackson agreed that none of their achievements would have been possible without the support of the entire membership body!
13 JUL: 5th District Past Commander Samuel L. Perry congratulated Past Commander (Cdr) Ronnie J. Ogletree (11 years) and Past Senior Vice-Commander
Willie “Jack” Jackson (5 years) for their achievements during their tenure. Past Commander Ogletree personally thanked some of the members with 100 % membership pins for 2015-2016. Past Commander Ogletree also thanked the new

We ended last year with more than the requirement at 175%; this placed us #1 in 5th District! With the great start in July we helped our 5th District tie with 12th District for being the first districts “off zero”! The Department of Georgia goal for 50% membership paid is 24 August; we need to ensure Post 9-1-1 makes that goal! Post Officers your dues should al-ready be paid. Dues may be mailed-in, paid during the membership meetings, or renewed online at www.legion.org/renew If you need help with your membership number for mailing or online payments, please contact the Adjutant. We want to continue to target our Global War on Terror, Operation Enduring Free-dom, NATO, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and all other Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Iraqi Service members. Let these Service mem-bers know that the American Legion is their organization and “We’re Not Your Granddad’s American Legion”!
For God and Country,
Sr. Vice-Commander Michael Gaines

Purple Heart Day is an observance that commemorates the creation of the Purple Heart Medal in 1782. The holiday also encourages people to pay their respects to fallen soldiers, to listen to the stories of soldiers and veterans, and to thank them for their service to the nation. The Purple Heart is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces. Introduced as the
“Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is also the nation’s oldest military award. In military terms, the award had “broken service,” as it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was re-introduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The medal’s plain inscription “FOR MILITARY MERIT” barely expresses its significance www.va.gov/opa/publications/celebrate/purple-heart.pdf

24 JUL: Immediately following the election on May 23, the newly elected Commander, Kareem A. Flournoy, requested a brief meeting with his newly elected and appointed team. He stressed that we need to build a better relationship with the Posts in our District in order to give each other support. Well, it was the season of installations! Mundy-Beck Post 9-1-1 attempted to make as many Posts’ in-stallations as possible in the 5th District and was even able to make one invite to the 10th District. The Post will visit those that we were not able to attend in the near future. It was a very rewarding experi-
ence for the Post 9-1-1 members that attended the “Installation Circuit”. They were able to see other
facilities, the operation other Post installation ceremonies, and most importantly meet the members and their guests. Pictures are not available for Post 1 (Cdr attended) and 160 (Sr. Vice Cdr attended) installations.

Mundy-Beck Post 9-1-1 was stood up as the first service post with the designation of 9-1-1 on 09 February 1990. Former members of Post 291 started Mundy-Beck American Legion Post
9-1-1. The original members were 1st Responders, Law Enforcement, Fire Services, and Support personnel. We derived our name from the first African-American Atlanta Police Officer Claude Everett Mundy, Jr. and the first African-American Atlanta Firefighter Howard Haley Beck in honor of their ultimate sacrifice in service to the Atlanta community. Our unique colors represent the three services we were founded under: the Royal Blue crown for Law Enforcement, the Red braid for Fire Services and the Gold lettering for Support Services. We are proud to be the only Post in America to wear these colors to represent Our Country, Our Organization, and Ourselves.

. THE AMERICAN LEGION PREAMBLE AND INTERPRETATION ~ CLAUSES 1-5
"For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and
order; to foster and perpetuate a 100-percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and
incidents of our associations in the great wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to
the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;
to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and
transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and
sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." Each of the 10 clauses of the Preamble, though brief, has a world of meaning. This article will provide
clauses 1-5, September will provide clauses 6-9, and October will provide clause 10. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY, WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER...This is the introduction. It declares that
The American Legion recognizes the influence of Almighty God in all worthwhile endeavors-and declares the alle-
giance of Legionnaires to both God and Nation. First things have been put first. All that follows is in conformity. TO UPHOLD AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...The Constitution of
the United States is the written bulwark of our free way of life and representative government. It is our guarantee
of liberty, freedom, justice and democracy. Members of The American Legion bore arms-went to wars-to defend
and uphold this document of freedom. TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER...Without law and order, liberty would become license. Law and order protect
our pursuit of happiness, one of our God-given rights. Members of The American Legion served in wars to uphold
law and order among nations. It is just as important to maintain the due processes of law in our domestic affairs. It
binds Legionnaires to obey the laws of the land and to support the constituted authorities in enforcing those laws.
It means the citizen must never take the law into his own hands! TO FOSTER AND PERPETUATE A 100 PERCENT AMERICANISM...Americanism is the gist of the American
ideals of freedom, justice, individual rights and unfenced-in opportunities. It embraces all the freedoms we cherish
and all the rights that are guaranteed to us. It is the very opposite of hatred, bigotry and intolerance. Americanism
is the creed that has blazed the world-wide trail for justice, fair play, decency, belief in God, private enterprise,
universal education, and progress in all human endeavors. It puts a premium on the virtues of loyalty, patriotism,
hard work and thrift. TO PRESERVE THE MEMORIES AND INCIDENTS OF OUR ASSOCIATIONS IN THE GREAT WARS...Service in
defense of America is the greatest experience in the lifetimes of all veterans. Recalling the highlights of that service
means more than flashbacks to tense moments of excitement and danger in battle, the grime of muddy trenches,
the perils of sub-infested oceans, the combats in the wild blue yonder. It means also the un-erasable recollection of
the comradeship, the bravery of pals, the teamwork, the sacrifices, the miseries and hardships of military cam-
paigns shared in common. It means the bond that binds all ex-servicemen and women together in mutual affec-
tion, respect and gratitude. It also means keeping green forever the memories of the supreme sacrifices of gallant
American patriots, sacrifices necessary to the winnings of wars. It means faithful annual observance of Memorial
Day and Veterans Day.
