A migraine is anintense, incapacitat-ing headache, accompanied by othersymptoms, thatoccurs repeatedly insome persons, occurring in episodesor ‘attacks’. It canaffect both sexes butis more common infemales. The natureof attacks variesbetween persons andfrom time to time inthe same person.Attacks may lastfrom 4 hours to 72hours in someindividuals.

Symptoms of aclassic migraineattack may appear asfollows: Some suffer-ers have a warning‘aura’, which is oftenvisual in nature, flashing lights, zig-zag lines etc. Somepeople may get otherwarning symptomslike tingling of theside of the head orface, etc. The painmay be throbbing orpulsating, oftenaffecting one side ofthe head. It may beaccompanied bynausea or vomiting.

It is believed thatconstriction, thendilatation andinflammation of bloodvessels that go to thescalp and brainresult in migraineheadaches. Visiondisturbances occurwhen blood vesselsnarrow. Headachebegins when theywiden again.

Treating Migraines with HomeopathyAttacks may be

triggered by:

• Tension or stress.Emotional problemsare probably themost commonreason for migraineattacks, but head-aches don’t neces-sarily coincide withemotional upset. They often occur onweekends whenstress is decreased.

• Menstruation.• Use of oral contra-

ceptives.• Consumption of

alcohol or certain

foods.• Bright lights or

flickering lights.• Lack of sleep or too

much sleep.The risk of develop-

ing migraines increaseswith a stressful lifestyle, be it at the homeor at the office, a familyhistory of migraines, smoking or excessalcohol consumption.Hence it is importantto cut down the stressin your life. Practicingrelaxing techniques,Yoga, meditation are ofbenefit. During asevere attack, rest isessential but in be-tween attacks, exerciseis essential to maintaina general level offitness.

Exercise (includingdeep breathing exercis-es) also works as astress reliever. Two keypoints for reducing pain

with acupressure arethe web between theforefinger and thumb(squeeze there untilyou feel pain) andunder the bony ridgesat the back of theneck (use boththumbs to applypressure there).

Foods like nuts, chocolates, cheese, excess salt maytrigger headaches. No particular dietaryrestrictions arenecessary unless youfind that a certainitem of food triggers

your headaches.Homeopathy has aholistic approach to ahuman being andhence is well suitedto curing a personwho suffers frommigraines. A classicalHomeopath will takea detailed history ofthe individual thatwill encompass hismental, physical andemotional profilealong with the mainproblem. Treatmentwill then be institut-ed, aiming at bring-ing in greaterbalance at all levels, thus making theperson better adaptedto life’s stresses andstrains. Immunelevels are improved, and the person is puton the road to cure.

Need for a changed outlookNations around the world have begun to recognize the deeply

rooted problems of discrimination against women. CelebratingWomen’s Day is a feeble effort to bring awakening amongst thefairer sex about their rights, to make them more stronger emo-tionally, educationally and even physically so that they have a senseof participation in the development of the country. Conditioned toundervalue their skills and abilities, women have been marginal-ized in society and have been forced out of the decision makingprocess. Unfortunately, till today, the present effort of the socialwelfare agencies and women’s organization have failed to providewomen their rightful place in society.

Discrimination against women is a part of power structure basedon male supremacy which assigns social roles to men and womenaccording to their sex. Women are in charge of raising childrenand doing house chores while men are responsible for the eco-nomic support of the family. In this structure men are given theauthority- endorsed by custom- to maintain such distribution oftasks. Right from childhood, women are trained to believe thattheir value is attached to the men in their lives- fathers, brothers, husbands and sons- and often they are socially ostracized if theydisplease or disobey them. Though today women have steppedout of their homes and are working at strategic places contribut-ing equally or sometimes even more, they many times have tobear the sexual harassment at work place. This has forced eventhe Supreme Court to interfere and bring in strong legislation toprevent sexual harassment of female workers. Not only this inmany sectors, especially in unorganized sectors, women are paidvery low wages in comparison to their male colleagues. Thoughthe Constitution of India provides for ‘equal pay for equal work forboth men and women’, the Equal Renumeration Act, 1976 has alsobeen enacted, but the wage difference still continues and in theprimary sector, equality of wages is a far cry.

Discrimination against girl child starts at an early age. Theyoften receive inadequate food and insufficient education. To addto the woes the prevalent dowry system, has led to abortion offemale childe or female infanticide. This has reduced the female-male ration to an alarmingly low proportion.

Mere enacting of an Act or celebrating a day as the Women’sDay is not going address this serious problem. For results, theattitude of the males has to change towards females, right fromhome to office. Also the females have to themselves fight this dis-crimination and help vest all the rights with the girl child. Sternaction should be taken against those promoting gender biases, asit is very clear that till this half of society, who is the creator of life, remains weak and under privileged, it is not possible to havewholesome development of our country.

On the occasion of 28th anniversary of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, acricket match was organised for the women staff. The women team from the socialwelfare department of NMMC bagged the second prize. Social development officer ofNMMC, Sarjerao Paranje felicitated the team. (By: Chandrashekhar Hendve)

Controlling the Technology Epidemic

By Dr. Veena Adige

It is neitherstrange nor uncom-mon nor evensurprising to see agroup of silentpeople in a publicplace concentratingon their cell phonesor laptops to theexclusion of every-thing else. Theymay have the latestinformation aboutthe world but areabsolutely ignorantof the people next tothem. They are intheir own sweetworld.

It is sad but true.Technology has

invaded our housesand offices, so muchso that even normalconversation seemsunimportant orunnecessary.Cartoons show twopeople on a date‘talking’ to eachother on their cellphones. Or parentstelling children to‘wash their finger-tips’ before eating!!!

The averagechild in the US is

fully conversant withtechnology and haseyes and ears only forthe cells, laptops orTV. They ‘play’, ‘makefriendships’ anddiscuss through them.Even homeworkassignments arescheduled through theschool laptop!Smart schoolshave touchscreen tablets forchildren from avery young age.Games are playedwith finger tips.

However, thereis light at the endof the tunnel. USparents show agrowing concern ofthe invasion oftechnology and areconsciously tryingto change thehabits of the younggeneration. Remindsone of a couple ofdecades back whenUS was concernedabout the future overweight people andcame down heavily oncupcakes and sodas inschools and stressedon healthy food toprevent a nation ofoverweight citizens.

Today parents, grandparents, nanniesand baby sitters enrolltheir wards intoswimming, soccer, music, singing, painting and the liketo control the technol-ogy monster. A look at

Chelsea Piers inStamford will revealthe extent of impor-tance adults aregiving for sports oftheir youngsters.Swim teams, gymnas-tics, yoga, and othersports are in favour. The adults make time

to shepherd the kidsto their variousclasses in an attemptto wean them awayfrom technology andkindle interest inother things. Kayak-ing is another sportwhich is high on thepriority list of adultsfor their wards.Riverside in Connecti-cut has a beautifulbody of water wherecute ducks and swansswim along with thekayaks.

Binney Park inGreenwich is a veryattractive place.Beautiful, serene, cool

but the only visitorsoften are the dogwalkers. Connecticuthas huge libraries andchildren have theopportunity to ventureinto another world, reading and living it.Some youngsters dospend quite a major

portion of their timein libraries and it is ahealthy sign. They areno longer islands ofsolitary confinement.Book reading, withauthors addressingthe readers is verywelcome.

Parents are alsoencouraging childrento enter the musicsphere. Young violin-ists, chelloists, pianoplayers are aboundingand flourishing. It isgood to see activeinterest being takento guard the young-sters and preventthem from falling into

the trap of technology.I was happy to see

another trend, that ofbirthday partieswhich revolve aroundinteresting activities.Pizza making andeating, painting, baking, pottery, trampoline birthday

parties are the inthing. Parents payfor the party andleave the proceed-ings to the organ-isers. At a paint-ing party recentlymy husband and Ijoined the group ofeleven year olds asthey were taughthow to paint by anaccomplishedteacher. With aneasel, paints andbrushes, we sataround her as shetold us which

colours to use andhow to use them.

At a pizza party itwas interesting to seeyoung cooks kneadthe dough, choosetheir toppings andwatching how it ismade. The best was atrampoline jumpingparty. Guests weregiven socks andbands to identifythem from otherchildren, and were letloose on the trampo-lines. They jumped totheir hearts content, under the sharp eyesof the instructors andwhen the bell rang to

signify that thetime was up, theytrooped for thebirthday party, satisfied and happy.

Even then it isalarming howtechnology isinvading people. The epidemicproportions thattechnology hasreached can bereversed by theabove mentionedmethods beforemore damage isdone. It is up to theadults to see thatthe younger genera-tion is on the rightpath.

Why do we require SwachhBharat Mission?

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched bythe Narendra Modi government on October 2, 2014.Why do we require such a mission? It is a con-straint mission for the development of the nation; because without cleanand proper sanitation, a country cannot develop.

If our home is clean, then the question arises in our mind that why weneed a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan? Because at large, India’s public areas, streets, government offices, roads, footpaths, rivers and government hos-pitals are generally filthy. Almost everyday, we observe the garbage justoutside our home boundaries or publicplaces. But who cares?

Just for publicity’s sake, sweepingwith the broom for one or two days can-not lead to success of the Swachh Bhar-at Mission. Also, any politician or a gov-ernment or public leader cannot attainsuccess of Swachh Bharat by doing itthemselves alone. These exemplary lead-ers need to set an example for the mass-es to clean up their surroundings. Ifthese leaders have a real intention toclean up India, then they should proceed towards the dirty areas of theslums and mohallas.

Apart from a few cities, many villages are often cleaner than theunplanned colonies of big cities, and the more densely populated areas aredirtier, and people feel less of a responsibility to clean them. Another issuein such areas is that they do not have sufficient space and proper drain-age system, and thus, those dirty areas attract even more garbage.

In India, the major rivers are polluted and the main causes of pollu-tion are that various industries are established on the banks of a river, and people consider the river as their universal drainage. The govern-ment should impose strict rules to these industries to treat the garbagebefore dumping them into the river and ensure that it doesn’t affect theecological balance of the rivers. The mission of the present government toclean up the River Ganga from pollution by the year 2020 is a greatchallenge. To achieve this mission of Swachh Bharat, we the people ofIndia need to be more responsible to realise this dream.

Let all of us Indians therefore take up the responsibility to realise thedream of Swachh Bharat (clean India), change our mindset, and learnfrom the world’s cleanest countries and adopt their techniques to keepour neighbourhoods and country always clean.

Need for introspectionOnce considered to be the heaven of peace and tranquility, Navi

Mumbai can hardly be described the same. In the last few monthsthere has been an alarming rise in crime, especially the petty theftsand house burglaries. Police response to the rising crime has beeninadequate. Insufficient police strength, huge migration of labour, because of large scale construction activities, close proximity toMumbai, which can well be described as the den of underworld gangsand criminal activities, are sported as excuse for the zoom in thecrime graph. But along with these, there is no denying the fact thathandling has been inept and wanting.

While police may pat their shoulders for solving a few of the cas-es, it is disheartening to note that several remain unsolved whichonly help in bolstering the enthusiasm of the culprits, encouragingthem to venture further into crime. Police justify themselves byclaiming that some of the absconding culprits are foreign immigrantswho flee back after committing the crime and as such fall beyondtheir jurisdiction. This is unfortunately true. The police do not seemto have the authority as well as the power to nab such culprits, un-less the Central Government permits, which is a long procedure. This problem can only be tackled if India, like other nations, followsthe principle of issuing visas to the neighbouring countries and al-lows only those foreigners who have obtained proper jobs and ac-commodation. Secondly memorandum of understanding should besigned with the neighbouring countries to allow the police to nabthe culprit from whatever area he may have fled to.

The attitude of the police officials towards the complainants isalso many times not encouraging. It is seen that there is the ten-dency to ignore the crime, discourage lodging of complaints, slowdisposal of cases, harassment of witnesses etc. This has certainlydwindled the faith of the public in the police department and theysimply hesitate in going to the police stations for lodging of com-plaints and for other grievances. Over the past few months, therehas also been a dereliction of duties as well. Night patrolling, whichused to be a daily exercise, has been abandoned, for reasons bestknown to the police officials themselves. This has led to the in-crease in the cases of chain snatching and house breaking incidents. The detection rate has also not gone up.

The Navi Mumbai police department is presently trying to builda public friendly image. This is heartening and is certainly the needof the hour. This will help in strengthening the much desired faith ofthe public in the police department. Without public joining handswith the police department, crime cannot be controlled. The publicon their part should come forward bravely with complaints as wellas with information. The night patrolling exercise should be startedfor all the sectors to check the growing petty crime. It should be theendeavor of each one of us to make Navi Mumbai a crime free soci-ety.

As a precaution to prevent anyuntoward incident during the NewYear Eve, special arrangements weremade by Navi Mumbai Police andthere were 44 check post by policeand 18 check post by the traffic de-partment and 300 police officers andadditional police personnel were de-ployed by the transport department.

As per the data from the trafficdepartment in the drink and drive

offence, in Vashi unit 30 people werecaught, while in APMC-38, Ko-parkhairane-38, Rabale-14, Mahape-16, Turbhe-23, Seawoods-8, CBD Be-lapur-19, Kharghar-25, Taloja-28,Kalamboli-41, Panvel-21, Panvel Ta-luka-17, Uran-7, Nava-Sheva-5,Gwanaphata-10 cases were regis-tered. Driving licenses of the motor-ists have been suspended for threeto six months.

NMIA to become reality in2020- A big question mark?Ministers and planning authorities claim by mid-2020 NMIA will

be ready for inauguration; but residents are not so hopeful

By Abhitash D.Singh

NAVI MUMBAI: Whilethe City and Industrialand Development Cor-poration (CIDCO) hasset December 2020 asthe deadline for thecompletion of the NaviMumbai InternationalAirport project, thesources close to theproject as well as resi-dents feel that thechances are negligibleand the first flight isunlikely to take off be-fore 2023-24.

In 2019, the thenMaharashtra ChiefMinister Devendra Fad-navis had assured thatthe Navi Mumbai Inter-national Airport will bein action in December,2020. Many ministersand also officials hadpromised the NaviMumbaikars that theNMIA would be readyand become functionalby mid- 2020. TheNewsband correspon-dent before the end of2019 spoke to few offi-cials and Project Affect-ed People (PAP’s) about

the reality of the NMIAbut they told that thereis a zero chance of the

project getting complet-ed by December, 2020.

If the environmen-talists are to be be-lieved, there is morebad news in the pipelinefor the Navi MumbaiInternational Airport(NMIA). On one handthe CIDCO is claimingthat the villagers whoare happy with the pro-posals offered to themare ready to relocate, but it is said that fewvillagers are very firmon their decision andhave said that they willnot relocate until andunless CIDCO does notgive them what was

promised.The former Manag-

ing Director of CIDCO

on the condition of ano-nymity said, “In fact, ifthe pace of work is tak-en into consideration, than the earliest flightfrom the NMIA runwayis likely to take off onlyin 2023.”

Even though theplanning agency hadspeeded up the workand completed a land-fill of 8.5 meters andalso the diversion of tworivers, the other worklike levelling of a hill-ock that blocks theflight path needs morework. The terrain is

Ulwe residents demand more trainsfrom Kharkopar & Bamandongri station

Due to less frequency of trains autorickshaw drivers charge exorbitantly

By Abhitash D. Singh

ULWE: While thepopulation of Ulwe hasincreased manifold, therailway services havefailed to increase com-mensurately, say theresidents. Kharkopar& Bamandongri sta-tions were opened topublic in November2018. However, sincethen, the frequency oftrains has remainedthe same.

There are 10trains each fromNerul and CBDBelapur forKharkopar sta-tion. The firsttrain from Ner-ul to Kharkoparstarts at 7:45am and the lasttrain is at8:45pm, where-as from CBD-Belapur the firsttrain starts at6:22 am and thelast train is at 9:32 pm.The residents feel thatthere should be at leastfew more trains so thatthe people of Ulwe donot face the autocraticand demanding natureof autorickshaw driv-ers.

Pratik Yadav, one ofthe founders of Pariva-tan Foundation and aresident of sector-17,Ulwe said, “The popu-lation of Ulwe is in-creasing at a rapidpace. The residentialprices too are scalingnorthwards. However, while there has been arise in the populationin the node, the trans-port facilities, especial-ly trains, have failed tokeep pace. As of now

there are only 10trains from both Ner-ul & CBD Belapur tocater to the populationof more than 1 lakh ofUlwe. This is very less.We are demanding in-troduction of few moretrains. The last trainfrom Nerul is at8:45pm and if the pas-sengers miss thistrain then they have togo either by bus or

auto. The autorick-shaw drivers chargeRs 20-30 per seat fromNerul to Sector-19 andfrom Sector-19 to Sec-tor-17 they chargeRs.50 for just 1kmwhich is exorbitant.”

Junaid Shaikh, aresident of Ulwe Sec-tor-9 said, “I work inMasjid Bunder. As thelast train to Ulwe is at8:45pm from Nerul or9:32pm from CBD-Be-lapur, I am forced toleave from office early. If I miss either of thesetrains, I have to lookfor an alternative. Many times the autodrivers refuse to ply atnight so I have to walkfor nearly 2 km. Cen-tral Railway should

definitely increase thenumber of trains sothat our problems getresolved. At Nerul sta-tion the last trainshould be at 10:30pmand in CBD Belapur itshould be at 10:45 pm.”

One of the autorick-shaw drivers’ unionmembers on the condi-tion of anonymity said,“As of now we arecharging Rs.50 per seat

from Shagun Reality toSector-17 because wedon’t get passengersback from that area. Ifthe frequency of trainsincreases, we willcharge accordingly. The population nearKharkopar station isvery less and most ofthe flats are vacant.Once all the flats willbe filled, the fares willautomatically comedown.”

A K Singh, Sr. Pub-lic Relationship Officerof Central Railway saidthat they are well awareof the problems of theUlwe residents. “We areworking towards in-creasing the number oftrains, but it will takesome more time.”

Recently Larsen &Toubro was officiallyawarded the contractfor construction. Butstill there are many dif-ficulties technically.

Vitesh Mhatre, a lo-cal leader from Ulwesaid, “NMIA projectwas started in 2007 andnow almost 12 yearsafter the project, thereis not much progress. Many of the otherprojects which have

been planned for thesmoother flow of trafficfrom different parts ofMumbai to NMIA, havealso not taken off theway they needed to pro-ceed. Infact many ofthose are still in plan-ning stage since 2007. One of the mainprojects to enhance con-nectivity to NMIA isthe Mumbai Trans Har-bour Link(MTHL) andin the year 2019 thefirst pier of the 22.5kmsix lane MTHL came upin Sewri which is al-most 49 years after itwas first proposed.”
