Issue : 250 23 February, 2020

Need for introspectionOver the last few weeks, there has been a stupendous in-

crease in the crime graph. Cases of daylight robbery, chainsnatching etc. are on the rise while the detection rate has re-mained abysmal. This has instilled a sense of insecurity amongstthe residents. The non chalant attitude of the many police offi-cials, non friendly image of the police department and the diffi-cult legal procedures have only helped in eroding the imagefurther.

This is an era of specialization. Considering the competitive-ness that one has to face, success in any field, to a great extent, depends on specialization. This adage applies to the police de-partment as well. The present day working in the police depart-ment makes it imperative for the officials to carry out a widerange of duties, which in turn adversely affects their performanceas prime security providing agency. The police today have nodefined duties, which varies from nabbing criminals to provid-ing security to the VVIPs to making bandobast for dharnas &community celebrations, to managing traffic, mediating in dis-putes, providing security cover to the politicians during elec-tions and election rallies and what not. It is because of this multifaceted duty requirement that the performance of police in Mum-bai and Navi Mumbai is lack luster and they fail to perform theirprime duty that of providing security to the residents, which iswhat they are actually created for. Limited force equipped witharms of the stone- age era with unlimited working hours is find-ing itself at the receiving end especially when the nature of crimeis getting sophisticated and complex. As is said power corruptsperson, the same is true to great extent for the police forcealso, which wields legitimate and some times even illegitimatepowers. Lack of commitment and weak morale are visible in thepolice force today leading to disgust in the society and police asa profession carries a very poor image.

The police alone cannot be blamed for this sorry state of af-fairs. Huge interferences from the politicians who treat the po-lice department as personal employees, has also contributedtowards its poor performances. Transfers and postings makelot of news these days where merits rarely count. This has put abig question mark on the working of the police department andthere is an eminent need for revamping the whole system espe-cially in view of the recent scam.

The police department needs to go in for specialized forcesfor different works like for example crime branch, VVIPs secu-rity, traffic department etc. It is heartening to note that recentlyefforts have been made to modernize the department, but theforces should be imparted specialized training in dealing withparticular kind of crimes especially in view of new types of crimeslike financial and cyber crimes. A significant amount of autono-my needs to be given to the police department and there has tobe a minimum interference from the politicians. In this revamp-ing process not only the police department needs to be over-hauled but the public in general also needs to be counseled. The illegal migrants from neighbouring countries, the slum dwell-ers, many of the road side beggars and urchins are also poten-tial criminals and they need to be discouraged as prevention ofcrime is better than conviction of criminals after crime is com-mitted. The working conditions in the police department needto be improved and the police force should be augmented andequipped with latest arms, means of communication & trans-portation. They should also have better inter connection andexchange of information with other security agencies in orderto enhance their performance and also to improve their saggingmorale.

The iconic Kala Gho-da festival concluded ona high note with muchappreciation by citizensa few days back inMumbai. The KalaGhoda festival, nowover two decades old, isorganised annually dur-ing the first week ofFebruary. This eventcelebrates art, bringstogether people from allwalks of life and createsnew memories whilerefreshing old ones. Also, on a side note, theevent is free for all vis-itors.

The festival had astrong focus on four-teen art categorieswhich included heri-tage walks, literature, theatre, cinema, urbandesign, and danceamongst others. Theparticipants had theopportunity to learnmore about their favou-rite art form and get in-troduced to new ones.

We particularly en-joyed the Fort heritagetour curated by an ar-chitect which educatedus about the history ofthe buildings in theFort area and the seriesof reclamation activi-ties that took place inthe city since the 1700AD. We have developeda much deeper appreci-ation for our city and itshistory. Another activ-ity which was a crowdfavourite was the seriesof short films which fol-lowed audience interac-tion.

In addition to beingmesmerised by art,Kala Ghoda is a greatevent for families andfriends to bond and re-connect. Everyone fromnew parents with stroll-ers to college studentsto senior citizens spenthours at the event hav-ing a good time. As abonus some get a sur-prise bump in to withtheir long-time ex-col-leagues and batch-mates. Also, newfriendships are formedduring the standing inlines and activity par-ticipation.

Though Navi Mum-bai has many eventsthroughout the year, itdoes not have one thatmatches the scale, scope, and intensity ofKala Ghoda. UnlikeSouth Mumbai, NaviMumbai does not facespace constraints. Oneof the suitable placesfor conducting NaviMumbai’s version ofKala Ghoda would beon the road stretch be-tween Vashi Bus Standand Sagar Vihar. It isan unbusy road withample space to houseactivity centres. Fur-thermore, its proximi-ty to public transporta-tion hubs would makeit easily accessible toMumbai and rest ofNavi Mumbai. Thisfun event would enablecitizens of all ages tocome together, cele-brate art, and makenew memories. Just thevery thought of havingour version of Kala Gho-da is creating so muchexcitement, imaginewhen this translatesinto reality.

The other day, as Iwent for a walk aroundthe Nerul lake andpassed by Jewel of NaviMumbai, I was pleas-antly surprised to seepeople of all age groupssoaking in the beauty ofnature and indulging inactivities that seemedto bring joy and happi-ness to their faces. While there were thosewho were out for a ca-sual stroll, there wereothers who were on aweight loss mission, seriously engrossed inbrisk walk listening tomusic on their smartphones, blissfully un-aware of those aroundthem. There were seri-ous joggers and run-ners who seemed to begearing up for a mara-thon. There were youngchildren, frolickingaround trying to keeppace with their elders, and enjoying passingthrough the tunnel oftrees. There was an eld-erly man standing onhis head, and I could nothelp but admire thestillness and firmnessof the difficult posturethat he maintained fora reasonably long peri-od of time. There wereteenagers playing dif-ferent sports in the openspaces – from football tocricket to badminton, they were all engaged inhealthy competition. And then there werepeople working out inthe open gym on ma-chines that may not betechnically sophisticat-ed or branded, butsolved the purpose they

Fitness Fever – A Healthy Viruswere intended for. Therewere some silently do-ing yoga, meditation, and deep breathing ex-ercises. Of course therewere couples clickingselfies with broadsmiles, finding cosy cor-ners where they couldbecome invisible to theworld. As I reflected onwhat I had seen, whatstruck me was that al-most everyone seemedto have one commongoal – fitness.

“Fitness isn’t a sea-sonal hobby, it’s a life-style.” Indeed, if onewalks in the numerousopen parks in Navi

Mumbai, one cannothelp but observe thatfitness has graduatedfrom being a fad to a lif-estyle. The fitness feveris delightfully conta-gious, and seems to beinfecting Navi Mum-baikars across the city. The fever takes on dif-ferent forms based onpersonal preferences, but it is a healthy vi-rus that will make apositive difference toeach individual whocontracts it. It is theperfect diagnosis forthose seeking solitudeand ‘me time’ just as itis for those searchingfor quality time withtheir loved ones.

One doesn’t need to

spend an exorbitantamount of money to goto a fancy gym toachieve one’s fitnessgoals. Away from thehustle bustle and pollu-tion of the main city,we residents of NaviMumbai are fortunateto have well designedand well maintainedpublic parks that areeasily accessible andstrategically locatedclose to housing societ-ies. Hence, it becomesconvenient for peoplewho do not have the lux-ury of space, fresh airor greenery in andaround their own com-

plex.It is heartening to

see people use the facil-ities that are madeavailable to them, to seethem conscious of theneed for fitness, to seethem passing on thebaton of fitness to theyounger generation. When fitness becomesa lifestyle, a passionand a mission, it is ahealthy sign of ahealthy nation! Let ushope this virus infectsmore and more peoplein the coming years…

Importance

The fourteenth day of every lunar month orthe day before the new moon is known as ShivaRatri. Among all the twelve Shiva Ratris that oc-cur in a calendar year, Maha Shiva Ratri, the one

that occurs in February-March is of the most spir-itual significance. On this day, the planetary po-sitions in the Northern hemisphere act as potentcatalysts to help a person raise his or her spiritu-al energy more easily. This is a day when natureis pushing one towards one’s spiritual peak. It isto make use of this, that in the Hindu tradition,we celebrate Maha Shiva Ratri which is night-long. To allow this natural upsurge of energies tofind their way, one of the fundamentals of thisnightlong festival is to ensure that we remainawake with our spines vertical throughout thenight.

The festival is principally celebrated by offer-ings of Bael leaves to Lord Shiva, all-day fastingand an all-night-vigil (jagaran). All through theday, devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya”, thesacred mantra of Lord Shiva. Penances are per-formed in order to gain boons in the practice ofyoga and meditation, in order to reach life’s high-est good steadily and swiftly. The benefits of pow-erful ancient Sanskrit Slokas and mantras suchas Shiva Sahasra Namam, Shiva Ashtothram,Bilvashtakam, Vishwanathashtakam, Kala Bhair-avaashtakam, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantram andother Shiva Sthothrams increase greatly on thisnight.

A boost to Mumbai’s night lifeMumbai's night life has comes alive as the shops

and malls in the city can now remain open 24X7and making way for free shopping at night. Themove to close shop early was initiated after serialbomb blasts and and 26/11 terror attack and thatforced the government to close shops and eateries to down shutters aroundmidnight. Presently shops can be kept open 24x7 and eating joints wereallowed to remain open beyond mid-night as well. The new move will giveMumbai's night life a boost and the shopping spree will continue to boostthe sales and the customers can walk across to malls at midnight alsoand buy items.

This was necessitated as the cities like London and Paris and otherplaces have 24X7 shopping and Mumbai followed suit. The Shops andEstablishment Act has been amended by the Maharashtra LegislativeAssembly to pave way for a such a positive move in the hope of increasingthe sales in the hope of boosting business in the Commercial Capital. Butthe move boomeranged to bring best results and the old order of the day isfollowed in many areas. Many shopping areas are alongside residentialareas and there is resistance of the inmates of these places. As far as oldtimers are concerned the new order makes no difference. The old methodof shopping is the best of the best as we have time to sleep and rest aswell.

Mumbai city is glorified with 24X7 shopping facility as one can shop, dine and play all night long and reduce the tension you have undergone inthe office routine. The night shopping facility will provide housewives togo for an outing and buy the items required for their regular use. Mum-bai is the commercial capital of India and just like in Mumbai night lifein the metro city is worth experiencing and with additional entertain-ment it will be worthwhile to go out and make hey when the lights are on.Despite providing such a special provision, the response in the last 30days is not fruitful as shopkeepers failing to get proper response continueearly closing the purpose of 24x7 shopping is totally defeated. The presentday clientele enjoy the new wave of shopping not very much. Onlineshopping is prevailing at present is more popular as return option is avail-able if you do not like a particular product.

We heard of 24x7 facility in Singapore and Dubai and now we areexperiencing such a feeling in the metro city. Please take care of yourwallets as we find highway robberies are common and do not drink anddrive in the expressways and risk your life in the name of shopping atnight. Let us make shopping a pleasure and not a burden by falling intotraps laid by shopkeepers 24x7 facility during festivities. There is no drasticchange in the shopping pattern and it remains a stalemate as 24x7 shop-ping will be of real success.

Despite online shopping prevailing very much, people would like topick and choose as per their own choices by visiting the shopping malls inthe metro city.

Sounding board of healthy politicsIt was great to see Uddhav Thackeray turning to PMs sounding board

and it is a healthy change for encouraging politics. Not withstandingideological differences with his MVA partners, Maharashtra CM assertedthat he would not allow the tinkering of human rights reiterated that noone should be afraid of CAA, and NPR will be conducted in the state. Thisshows that the CM has faith in PMs confidence booster and would like togo with the Central government.

In the wake of protests, agitation and disturbances this has come as asolace. Even Delhi CM Kejriwal exhibited confidence leaving the Con-gress led government all alone. But already, the age old party is in troublewith interior politics and an amicable solution will be arrived at the costof national interest. It is indeed a sounding board of health politics.
