For example, our office professionals and office support staff lead teachers in nominating and awarding Student of the Month recognition certifi- cates. They also serve as informal mentors and coaches for students who need a little extra encouragement and support. They work hard to track student data and attendance that helps us best identify the needs of students and determine how to best support them. Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Team worked to develop an academic recognition program that rewards students with GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Students will receive those rewards and recognition this week. If you attended conferences recently, you may have observed a teacher who spends extra time and goes the extra mile to guide, coach, and support students in reaching their goals. You also may not know that each week, teachers and staff “Share the Good,” which means they spend extra time ensuring that we all know about the stories of progress, perseverance, and success of individual students. The above are only a few of the many examples of YMS staff working toward building a positive learning environment and toward helping all students reach their maximum potential. At the front of our school hangs a banner that reads, “We are YMS! We DREAM BIG!,” yet we understand that big dreams are often achieved through small steps toward long-term goals. We pursue with daily persistence our “Dream Big” goal of creating a culture of high achievement where all students are proficient or advanced in math, reading, and writing. Yet, we also work on the positive mindset that will help us get there. Recently, the YMS staff has explored the idea of “moonshot thinking,” which means that instead of aiming for a mere 10% gain or small incremental improvement, we should aim for a 10x the improvement over what currently exists. The combination of a huge problem, a radical solution to that problem, and the breakthrough technology that just might make that solution possible, is the essence of a moonshot. When John F. Kennedy announced in 1969 the goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade, no one knew how that could be done or if it could be done. Yet we saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon by 1969. YMS, too, wants to achieve big dreams for kids, and though we may not always have the an- swers to our “moonshot” goals for students, we will steadily and persistently work toward them until we find a way. How can you as a family or community member support these efforts to maximize the growth of our kids and for to them create amazing lives for themselves? Talk to your kids about “moonshot thinking.” Ask them what they dream of achieving but fear it may not be possible. Let’s turn those dreams into real possibilities for kids. Together, we can achieve what we’ve previously thought impossible. Craig Curry, Principal Janelle Embrey

Small Steps, Big Dreams, and Moonshot Thinking If you do not spend a lot of time inside our building, you may not know all of the small but amazing things YMS staff do on a daily basis to help achieve big things for kids. For example, our office professionals and office support staff lead teachers in nominating and awarding Student of the Month recognition certifi-cates. Eagle Scout Project Completed at YMS!

Bryce Cerkowniak recently completed his Eagle Scout project at YMS. Using the specifications

for each running event at YMS, Bryce painted the track markings on our track curb. He started researching and planning the project in the fall and spent numerous hours getting approval from our district office, completing forms, gathering information, seeking donations, purchas-ing supplies, and recruiting volunteers. The project took

Bryce and his team of volunteers two days to complete. His team consisted of Jay Yates, Ethan Beyer, Daniel Johnston, Cody Johnston, Brett Cerkowniak, Ian Cullum, and Jared Cullum. Thank you for completing this project. It will be a great contribution to the track and field program at YMS!
