This award recognises the achievements of an individualwho isn’t usually in the spotlight but who works hardbehind the scenes to help the Trust deliver its objectives.

WINNERMalcolm CooperCarer and Involvement Volunteer

Malcolm, or Malc as he was known, campaignedto improve services for people under 65 withdementia while caring for his wife. His dedicationand commitment in tracking down managers andholding them to account is legendary. Withouthim the working age dementia service would notbe in existence and many people would not bereceiving a service at all. Malc worked with theTrust in service development to improve thequality of the services it provides. Sadly Malcolmpassed away after a short illness in October lastyear. He is greatly missed.

During a period of tremendous growth for theOffender Healthcare Directorate and a number

What a difference Trevor has madeas a volunteer. Working out of theRosewood Involvement Centre, hehelps service users, carers and staffunderstand the wonder of involvementand helps people understand howimportant living in recovery is by helpingand inspiring all who come into contactwith him on his own Recoveryjourney. The time Trevor gives freelyto involvement and the Trust is trulyamazing – it’s hard to explain theenormous amount of work he does.

Sylvia has had an exceptional career, she is the classic unsung hero, butepitomises the values of the Trust –openness, integrity, and honesty andabove all, remains positive. Sylvia doesnot seek the limelight, but her leadershipof this area is essential to the smoothrunning of the Trust. Sylvia and her teamhelp keep service users and staff safeand maintain the reputation of the Trustwith its regulators. Sylvia has made theTrust a safer place to be for all.

She manages anincredibly busy workloadwith a passion forexcellence that has theservice user clearly focusedat its centre and despite allthis she is always workingon something new to seehow they can make thingseven better. Even thoughthis invariably makes hereven more work...

Sangita is very creative and innovative whendeveloping voluntary opportunities. Nomatter how diverse the service user’s interestshe endeavours to make the placementhappen by researching and engaging withcommunity resources. Volunteering ispopular and Sangita has looked at newways of working to accommodate anyservice users that want to pursuevolunteering by changing her practice toensure everyone is seen quickly. No matterwhat obstacles arise, Sangita negotiateswith organisations to pursue placements.

NOMINEEAndy LathamGeneral Manager, Low Secure andCommunity Forensic Directorate, The Wells Road Centre, Nottingham

Andy took on the role of GeneralManager of this clinical directorateearlier this year having been the modernmatron for the service previously. Hetook it through a time of real changeand some difficulties. He also supportedthe offender (prison) health directorateuntil this was established as a standalone directorate. Andy has made asignificant contribution to the quality ofpatient care in a whole variety of waysbut specifically in his inspiration of thenursing and AHP team. His main claimto fame however this year is theexcellent work he has done in the areaof safeguarding.

Tess has driven forward andimplemented single handedlyefficient meetings by providingall papers electronically onscreen, removing the need forattendees to print off largevolumes of paper, saving onboth paper and printing costs.She also records the minuteselectronically in real timepreventing the need formanual note taking and thentyping up later which ensuresthat minutes are distributed ina more timely way andproviding efficiency savings, allwhilst supporting the chair byopening the various paperselectronically on screen.

Louise is very visible on the wards and is able tomotivate people to complete tasks. She has anopen door philosophy that encourages staff toapproach her for advice and support. Due to herbackground in many different roles within theNHS she is able to develop innovative ideas thatare sensible and most importantly achievable.She has managed to merge the High SecureWomen's Service with the Male PersonalityDisorder Service effectively showing her trueleadership style to ensure both services workcooperatively and support each other together.

AwardThis award goes to the individual that has demonstrated leadershipand management skills in developing an effective and efficientteam. Irrespective of their position in the Trust, this person willhave acted as a role model; setting highstandards, championing these and providingmentoring for others to do the same.

Sandra is a truly inspirational leader showingunrelenting support, encouragement, passion,vision and determination to ensuring highstandards are achieved for service users. Sandra isan excellent communicator and uses this to ensureall involved feel valued and listened to. Sandra hasbeen instrumental in developing services such asA&E liaison, weekend working in the Day Unit, anInvest to Innovate bid, an activity coordinator onWard B2 and many, many others. On developingthese services Sandra takes little or no creditpreferring to direct it to the team.

He facilitates many differentgroups and makes sure that patientsget involved and benefit out of it. Helistens to us very well and we feelour opinions matter. The EventsCommittee does all sorts to includediverse needs like music, food,culture etc. He always listens and hastime and patience for us. He is reallythere for you.”

As a provider of national, regional and local services,it is vital that Nottinghamshire Healthcare reflectsthe diversity of the communities it serves in the wayit delivers services. Nominees in this category demonstrate how this works on a daily basis around the Trust.

Javid and Abdul have worked in MHSOP particularlysince the beginning of this year and have taken olderpeoples equality issues to their heart. They are bothworking hard on the dementia agenda, taking themessage out to BME community groups. They attenddirectorate meetings where they are able to raise theprofile of equality and diversity and provide a differentperspective to the development of the service.

Colleagues report that Javid is a people person with a wonderfulability to connect, at all levels, to all people, from all backgrounds. Hehas taken on the role of CDW working with dementia care and isdelivering something that is making a real difference to people fromBME backgrounds out in the community. He brings the message of thepeople from the community to the staff working in clinical practice.

The focus of the SLT training is doing something differently backin the workplace. Following training much more visualcommunication is evident, staff develop CommunicationPassports, they work together with Assistant SLTs to developIntensive Interaction, and they refer people to the SLT service inan appropriate and timely way for both communication anddysphagia. Referrals to SLT have increased by 18% but theresource of the team has not changed. However using robustLearning and Development packages they are able to managethese effectively. Staff course evaluation is very positive.

Through Perdita's leadership theEducation team support and work inconjunction with other therapyproviders within the Unit. She ensuresthe concept of patient recovery isembedded within the work of thedepartment. She encourages her staffto continue their own professionaldevelopment to ensure that patientsget the best service. She hasgenerated interest in the departmentfrom other education providers andthe standards within the departmentprobably exceed those provided inmainstream education.

NOMINEE Trauma and Self Injury (TASI) TeamNational High Secure Healthcare Service forWomen, Rampton Hospital, Retford

The Wound Care Information Pack has beenintroduced to the National High Secure HealthcareService for Women at Rampton Hospital. Complexhistories of trauma are common place and there isa recognised link between trauma and self injuryoften resulting in wounds. The women and theteams working with them are provided with up todate information and support in assessing, treating,evaluating and caring for wounds. The women areinvolved in the process and management of theirwound care. Collaborative working is central andeveryone is provided with relevant information.Effective treatment, prevention of infection,reduction in pain and trusting relationshipspromote hope and recovery.

NOMINEE Peer Support Workers Stonebridge Centre, Nottingham

The Peer Support Worker (PSW) project has employed nine PSWs to walk alongside peopleon their Recovery journey, to provide positive role models for people who use the serviceand to challenge language and attitudes amongst existing staff. Not only has this provideda positive service but has also given people who have used the service an opportunity formeaningful employment. The service has also challenged perceptions of existing staff ofthe potential and capabilities of people who use or have used services.

The Human Library is itselfinnovative and everyonewho experiences it can seeits value. Jonathan, Sallyand Liz recognise that eachvenue brings up newchallenges and solutionsand the most successfulHuman Libraries are thosewhere the host hascommitted to the projectwith enthusiasm, creativityand an understanding ofwhy the Human Library isthe perfect learning modelfor their needs. They haveencouraged books todevelop a synopsis that isattractive to the potentialreader and embraced thelanguage of the library todevelop roles in a HumanLibrary event – the shelfmonitor, the librarian andthe "oracle" which acts asa virtual reference library.

NOMINEE Ruby Ward Nursing TeamRampton Hospital, Retford

The nursing team on Ruby Ward has worked hard to change the ethos of theward from generic care to individual care pathways for patients with severeand enduring mental illness at different levels of their care pathway. The

ward has adopted a Recovery approach and has fully involvedthe patients during this change, which has enabled them toimprove working relationships and patients’ individualisedcare. The patients are also encouraged to participate andchair meetings which will have an impact on their care. Team of

The team communicate well together and arehappy with the variety of work they undertake.Each member of the team has brought skills andexperience from their ‘past lives’ into theircurrent role. Between them the team haveworked in day services, care homes and usinginteractive approaches within autism. They bringa wealth of experience, wisdom and skills andare yet modest in their achievements. They meetregularly to support one another and share ideasand have developed as a team over recent years.The overwhelming reason they are so successfulin their work is that they are all passionate aboutsupporting communication.

This award celebratesmembers of staff workingtogether to get things done.

WINNERFoundation Trust Programme BoardDuncan Macmillan House, Nottingham

During the Foundation Trust (FT) process the Trust had todemonstrate how it will continue to deliver productivity andinnovation while maintaining quality and excellence ofservices. The achievement of FT standard is the mostimportant recent development for the Trust's future and bringsadditional freedoms that allow it to deliver benefits to serviceusers. It allows the Trust to be accountable to service users,partners and the public through membership and the Members’Council. Already the Trust has been successful in tendering fornew business and the Council has had its first two meetings.

NOMINEEDovecote Lane Residential Unit Team Beeston, Nottingham

The team has undertaken a programme of releasing time to care which hastransformed the way they work. They have developed an effective system to ensurethey provide daily activities to their clients. They plan these with the client groupthrough one to one discussions and client meetings. For example, one client’s love ofFrench culture led to a whole Parisian day; transforming the unit into Paris with abistro café and French activities and music. It was fantastic and the clients loved it.This demonstrated real person centred care, promoting hope and opportunities.

NOMINEE Dr Irene CormacConsultant Forensic Psychiatrist with a special interestin Physical Healthcare, Rampton Hospital, Retford

Dr Cormac, also know as Rene to her colleagues, has drivenforward a number of initiatives to improve the health ofpatients in Rampton Hospital. This has been carried outwhile working as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist with herown patient caseload. These programmes include: theHealthy Lifestyle Programme, monitoring the impact of the

smoke free policy introduced into the Hospital, a survey of expenditure on unhealthyfoodstuffs, a survey of causes of death at Rampton Hospital over an eighty year periodand surveys of Vitamin D and calcium deficiency. Early evaluations of the HealthyLifestyle Programme have shown proven benefits for patients.

NOMINEE John Mazur Staff Nurse, Kingsley Ward, Millbrook Mental Health Unit,Kingsmill Hospital, Mansfield

John has been a significant positive role model in leading andmanaging a team of professionals in the provision of an Inpatientenvironment that has very tangible and purposeful outcomes forthe client group. The focus is on Recovery, social inclusion, thetherapeutic and meaningful delivery of care and promotes andencourages empowering the service user within their own careand needs, rather than just about the person’s illness.

NOMINEEDr Eric Mendelson Clinical Director/Consultant ForensicPsychiatrist, WathwoodHospital, Rotherham

Eric has always been veryhands on in his work inthe unit. He has led fromthe front, introducingmany new ideas and mostimportantly systems toensure safe andtherapeutic care. His

methodology of ensuring that all staffparticipated in policy formation and that allstaff read and understood policies has notbeen replicated anywhere else in the Trust.He always has the care and treatment ofpatients at the very core of his and theunit’s activities. He is passionate about thestandard of care afforded to patients butalso about the welfare of the staff. He hasa very strong ethos of the unit being awhole team all focused on patient care. Healso provides an excellent standard of careto his own patients.

WINNER Jim WalkerAssociate Director of Performance andPartnerships – Local Services, DuncanMacmillan House, Nottingham

Jim is a dedicated and highly valuedcolleague in the Local Services Division.He carries a detailed knowledge of theorganisation's history and is a culture andstyle carrier for the Division and the Trust.Whilst he has a long and successfulcareer history as a clinician, he hascontinued to ensure that patient care ishis principal focus as a manager. Jimthoroughly deserves this nomination andindeed, this award.

In addition to the delivery of Resuscitationtraining to Trust staff Derek has also beeninvolved in carrying out Critical IncidentDebriefing which has an impact on the staffreceiving this intervention which in turnimpacts on service users and patients.Derek, as part of his own development andtraining goes out with paramedics andattends emergency situations. Theinformation, skill and knowledge gained isbrought back to the workplace as learning.

holding them to account is legendary.Without him the working age dementiaservice would not be in existence andmany people wouldn’t be receiving aservice at all. Above all of this he wasa devoted and caring husband whosework in his later life was driven by thedesire to help others.

expertise. By working together, we have been ableto develop a service that will provide high qualityservices for people in the local area.

We are also working closely together to supportpeople with learning disabilities to return closer tohome as part of a shared care pathway approachbetween Castlebeck and the Trust, again linkingthis to the quality and productivity agenda.

Both Barchester Healthcare and Castlebeck havebeen recognised as top employers in their field.Over the next year we will continue to providemutual learning and development opportunitiesthat help everyone involved look externally anddevelop confidence in understanding differentapproaches. This will be based on a strong sharedvalue base of developing services with people thatoffer choice and opportunity.

Delivering Quality andInnovation through PartnershipThe changes that the new government isproposing for the health service in Englandare certainly causing discussion and debate.Whatever you might think of the changes it isplanning, it has been a theme for a long timethat organisations should work together todevelop and deliver high quality services forpeople at a local level. NottinghamshireHealthcare has been working in an innovativeway with Barchester Healthcare and Castlebeckfor over two years now.

Together we have started to develop leadershipsupport, innovative action learning approachesand service ideas that we constantly checkagainst the measure: do they improve servicesand provide quality choices for people in a waythat makes the best use of increasinglystretched resources?

The Trust Board has formally supported thedevelopment of a new expert service foryounger people with dementia serving thepopulation of Nottingham, Nottinghamshireand the wider area. This service is being jointlydeveloped by the Trust and BarchesterHealthcare and will work to support peoplewithin their communities for as long aspossible, but also provide expert inpatientfacilities if needed. We know currently thatpeople are not able to access such services easilyand are sometimes cared for out of the area orin services that do not have the required
