By: Catherine Foster For those who have never met Theresa LaDu, they may be surprised to learn that the petite framed, soft spoken woman is actually a giant to her friends and in her community, and that she has a benevolent heart the size of the town square. It’s no wonder that residents of Wadsworth and surrounding communities flock to her Whole Day Café on a regular basis to experience the unique and inviting ambiance that she created with intention. Formerly a business teacher at Wadsworth High School and Guidance Counselor at Franklin and Wadsworth Middle School, LaDu has taken her love and passion for the city that she refers to as “the perfect place to live” and incorporated her need to share with others by opening a restaurant “for the community.” LaDu explained that her “no-tip” policy at the restaurant was for the sole purpose of making sure that her customers felt like they were going to a friend’s house for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. “I truly want our customers to relax and feel like they have a moment of pause in their busy day.” For those customers who feel uncomfortable not leaving a tip, LaDu explained that the tips get placed into a collection jar and at the end of the month she and her staff decides which local nonprofit group will become the benefactor of the money collected. “We

donate and support four to six groups each month and have regularly helped The Salvation Army and United Way,” LaDu said. According to LaDu, Whole Day Café serves approximately 200 to 250 customers each day and nearly 200 repeat customers each week. “Our customers are our friends. I know exactly who will be here at 9am and 2pm and, if they don’t show up, we worry and wonder where they are.” LaDu is the mother of three children. 11 year old Tori, whom she adopted at birth from China, Ryan who is 19, and Christine is 23 years old. When asked what her plans are for the future, LaDu replied, “I don’t know for sure, but I can’t wait to find out…”

A mission to bring joy

Theresa LaDu, owner of Whole Day Café.

It is so awesome to feature a member of the Wadsworth Community in our publication. Each month we will provide a story about someone who is doing something positive in Wadsworth, Sharon Center or Seville. If you know of anyone who deserves to be recognized, please email the information to our editor at [email protected]. The person who is named the “Our Upbeat Neighbor” each month also receives a beautiful floral bouquet courtesy of Amedeo’s Blossom Shop.

By: Jack OllomExecutive Director, Downtown Wadsworth

The mission of Downtown Wadsworth is to develop and maintain a downtown identity that will continually advance the quality of the community’s social, cultural and commercial environment while maintaining its rich heritage and vitality. In 2010, with the dedication of several dozen volunteers working endless hours, Downtown Wadsworth successfully hosted numerous festivities. These events were not only wonderful for the community of Wadsworth, they brought in hundreds of visitors as well. These events included: a mixer in February that featured an organ recital by Mrs. Metcalf; the annual Downtown Eggstravaganza in March where a record 29 businesses participated; the Herb and Craft Fair in May which brought hundreds of people downtown; a city-wide garage sale - the first annual “Treasure Hunt” in June; a Three-on-Three Basketball competition in July, where nearly 100 teams battled for their title; six Summer Breeze Concerts in July and August; a Back-to-School Bash, Pig Roast, Kids’ Carnival and Sidewalk Sale also in August; the Taste of Wadsworth in September, where 21 food vendors and restaurants contributed the best of their culinary fare; Scare on the Square in October where at least 1,000 people took part; and the year ended with a Candlelight Walk and “Elf Hunt”

in December. Whew! What a year! Maintaining the standard set in 2010 will be a challenge and therefore we will rely on the volunteers that are necessary in order to make these events a success. Currently we are working on formulating a “Friends of Wadsworth Trails” to perpetuate the multi-modal transportation plan which was partially funded in 2010 by a $50,000 grant written by Dr. and Mrs. Joe Arpad. This year we are also looking forward to the second annual Treasure Hunt and hope to increase the participation rate. We also want to expand our downtown beautification project and will continue the pursuit of making downtown Wadsworth a destination attraction. Other exciting projects that are currently underway are the countdown to Wadsworth’s Bicentennial celebration and a homecoming of monumental proportions that will bring people back to Wadsworth to celebrate a grand year of celebration in 2014. We are also very excited about the four new schools with a community center and swimming pool complex opening in less than two years. Please become a member of Downtown Wadsworth and sign up to serve on a committee and become part of Wadsworth’s history. Downtown Wadsworth is truly “where the community comes together!”

Upon entering the state-of-the-art facility, clients experience the utmost in relaxation and feel as though they’ve entered a sanctuary of beauty. No detail has been left out under the watchful eyes of Doctors Quereshy and Usman which include everything from the immaculate and elegant consultation room to the cutting-edge surgical suite. Patients no longer need to travel to larger metropolitan areas in order to seek out the services that are now available in Medina thanks to Visage Surgical Institute. “We offer safe and specialized treatment for our patients using progressive technology.” said Dr. Quereshy.

Part of the reason for their success is because of the emphasis that they both place on continued education and investment in technology. According to Quereshy, their ultimate goal is to provide patients with first rate care and one of the many ways that they do this is in sparing no expense. Their most recent purchase was a $165,000 facial CT (computerized tomography) scanner, which allows them to get a better view of the facial bones before performing surgery. Dr. Quereshy said various places of the jaw could be missing bone and tissues and with a good diagnosis the surgeon knows exactly where to go for corrective surgery. “Surgery is so precise now,” said Dr. Quereshy. “There is no second guessing on the patient.” Dr. Quereshy holds both a medical and dental degree. This cross-platform specialization combined with his

continued involvement at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospitals helps him keep his skills sharp. Quereshy calls his work at Rainbow Babies some of the most rewarding. “I see a lot younger kids with facial growth abnormalities and I treat all of these patients because I know the reward they will have 20 years from now.” Dr. Usman’s background is equally impressive. She has recently become board certified by the American Board of Endodontist (ABE), only one of two women in the State of Ohio to achieve this distinction. She has honed her skills as a master of root canals. Recently, the two have developed a procedure where patients can be given general anesthesia during their root canal treatment, termed as their “Endo-Asleep Treatment”. Due to their constant need to meet the demands of their patients, they have most recently opened “The V-Spa” which offers high quality Esthetic Services with their leading Esthetician, Katie Marino. For more information or to view a virtual tour of their office, you can visit their website at www.VisageFaceMD.com.

What is Vertigo? Vertigo is a symptom of an underlying prob-lem. The problem could be from an inner ear (vestib-ular) disorder or a problem with

the brain. Can Vertigo be treated? Yes, in many cases vertigo can be treat-ed depending on the underlying cause/diagnosis.How do I get a diagnosis? The first step is to go to your physician. They will rule out medical problems such as stroke or heart conditions and/or medication side effects. If it is deter-mined that the problem is coming from the inner ear, then a referral to a specially trained Physical Therapist is appropriate. What are the most common forms of vestibular disorders? The most commonly diagnosed vestib-ular disorders include Benign Paroxys-

mal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and ves-tibular labyrinthitis or neuritis. BPPV is the most common form of vertigo. Symptoms include vertigo, lasting sec-onds, usually with looking up and lying down on one’s side. Vertigo may also be caused by inflammation within the inner ear (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis), which in characterized by the sudden onset of vertigo and may be associated with hearing loss. What causes vestibular disorders? There are many possible causes of ves-tibular disorders. Ear infection, head in-jury and whiplash are the most common causes of vestibular disorders in people under 50 years of age, but aging brings its own set of challenges to the vestibular system. What will happen in Physical Therapy? The therapist will take a detailed his-tory of your symptoms and then perform an evaluation. The evaluation will include movements that may cause dizziness. The treatment for BPPV is very effective in eliminating the symptoms in one to two sessions. Recovery from labyrinthitis/neuritis can take a few weeks.

HealtHyhabitsThe top 12 healthy habits

By: Dulce ZamoraA WebMD Feature

No. 1: Eat Breakfast Every Morning Research shows that people who have a morning meal tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and cholesterol. The result is often a leaner body, lower cholesterol count, and less chance of overeating.No. 2: Add Fish and Omega-3 FattyAcids to Your Diet The AHA recommends a serving of fish two times per week. Besides being a good source of protein and a food relatively low in the bad type of dietary fat called saturated fat, fish has omega-3 fatty acids -- which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.No. 3: Get Enough Sleep “Your body has to have enough time to rest,” says Michael Fleming, MD, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Otherwise, he says you may find yourself feeling cranky and tired. Plus, sleep deprivation can negatively affect memory, learning, and logical reasoning.No. 4: Make Social Connections Volunteer. Go to church. Join a club. Whatever you do, do it with people. Communal activities are good for your physical and mental health, according to a study published in the American Journal of Health Behavior. Group ties also help improve mental functioning, and can help keep the mind active and maintain desirable levels of serotonin -- the brain chemical associated with mood.No. 5: Exercise for Better Health According to the National Cancer Institute, the benefits of exercise include:• Helps control weight•Maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints•Reduces risk of developing high blood pressure and diabetes•Promotes psychological well-being•Reduces risk of death from heart disease•Reduces risk of premature death•Reduces risk of certain cancersNo. 6: Practice Good Dental Hygiene Flossing your teeth every day could add 6.4 years to your life, according to Michael Roizen, MD. The mouth is an integral part of the body. Researchers suspect that the bacteria that produce dental plaque enter the bloodstream. They say these bacteria are somehow associated with the inflammation that occurs with plaque that blocks blood vessels and causes heart disease.

No. 7: Take Up a Hobby Since they are relaxing activities, hobbies are usually enjoyable. The joy may help people live healthier and recover better from illness. The participants with hobbies tended to have more drive and interest in things and other people.No. 8: Protect Your Skin Our skin starts to age as soon as we are born and, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the best way to protect it and look younger is to stay out of the sun as much as possible. To reduce the risk of skin damage, the AAD offers the following tips:•Always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.•Don a hat with a brim and wear other protective clothing.•Don’t deliberately sunbathe.•Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.No. 9: Snack the Healthy Way The ADA recommends five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day as part of a healthy diet. One way to incorporate fruits and veggies into your diet is to have them as snacks. They are low in calories and high in nutrients. Other healthful snacks include low-fat yogurt and nuts.No. 10: Drink Water Water is an essential fluid for good health. Joints need it to stay in motion, and vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidney, and liver need it to work properly. If you don’t get enough water, the body goes into emergency mode, and clings to every single water molecule it can find, reports the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center. The stored molecules appear as extra weight. The weight is only released once the body gets enough water.No. 11: Drink Tea There is some evidence that tea may help in improving memory, and prevent-ing cavities, cancer, and heart disease. Decaffeinated tea and unsweetened tea is better since caffeinated variety can be de-hydrating, and sugary drinks can lead to weight gain.No. 12: Take a Daily Walk Just move. Try pacing during phone calls, while you’re brushing your teeth, or while watching a little league game. Every 20 steps a person takes is 1 calorie burned. An eight-year study of 13,000 people also showed that people who walked 30 minutes daily had a significantly reduced chance of premature death compared with those who rarely exercised, reports the American Council on Exercise.

During the warm weather, grilling is a great way to prepare a healthy meal. Whether you use a charcoal grill, or a gas grill, there are rules to follow to make sure you have healthy and delicious results.

Rule 1: Keep your grill clean. Your food will taste better, and this is essential for general safety and health concerns. Rule 2: Don’t walk away from the food being grilled because it can burn quickly. Rule 3: Vegetables, and even fruit, are a great accompaniment to your grilled entrée. They usually don’t take as much

heat, so it is a good idea to keep them at the outer, cooler edge of the grill. Rule 4: If you are grilling low-fat meat, fish, boneless skinless chicken breasts, or any other foods that have a tendency to stick, apply cooking oil or nonstick cooking spray to the grill grate prior to preheating the grill. Rule 5: Turn the food in order to maintain even cooking. Many lean foods, such as fish and chicken, should only be turned once during cooking. Rule 6: If you are using bamboo skewers for kabobs, remember to soak them in water for at least 20 minutes before building kabobs to prevent the

skewers from burning. If you are using metal skewers use grilling mitts to handle. Rule 7: Add spice or rubs to your food 1 to 2 hours before grilling and keep refrigerated. This allows the food time to absorb the flavors. Rule 8: Apply barbeque sauces during the last 5 minutes of grilling. Applying too soon can cause burning due to the sugars in the sauce which cause flare-ups. Rule 9: Never reuse a plate or utensil that had raw product on it. Be sure to submit your favorite grilling recipe for a chance to win the Sherman Provisions $50 gift certificate. See this month’s recipe on page 19 for details.

By: Lisa Ryan At the age of 16, Dave Foster of Medina decided to follow his heart’s desire and embark on an entrepreneurial journey even though he only had five-dollars in his bank account. He had always had an optimistic attitude and knew for certain that he could do anything that he desired and saw in his mind. So, with a lot of determination and some soapy water and tire cleaner, Dave started his own company, Auto Spa, which provides auto detailing services to his customers. “I don’t want to ever do anything that makes me feel like I’m wasting my life or not giving everything I have.” Dave went on to explain that after he survived a fatal car crash when he 15 years old, his life seemed to take on a new meaning and his sense of gratitude and positive thinking became his normal way of life. Now 21 years old, Dave is enjoying the benefits that his hard work earned

him and details cars for family, friends, and an impressive amount of repeat customers. He attributes his success to his outlook on life and he thanks his mother for instilling the value of always seeing the bright side.

Loving your petsBy Natalie Bencivenga

Editor, Twoday Magazine Pets take care of you, too... No matter what kind of pet you own, we all know that our furry (or not so furry) friends quickly become an integral part of our lives that we cherish. You love your pet, take care of them, and would do what-ever you need to keep them happy and healthy. But, have you ever thought of all the wonderful benefits that your pet is giving to you? From improving your mood to keeping you in shape, our animal friends contribute to our good health, as well. Who knew that loving your pet could have so many health advantages? Owning a Pet Can Lower Blood Pres-sure: Watching your fish swim around in their tank, or taking the time to pet your affectionate dog or cat can actually help to reduce blood pressure, and thereby the risk of a heart attack or stroke, according to several studies. Other studies have also

shown that owning a pet can help those who have had a heart attack recover more quickly. Talk about a lifesaver. Pets Provide Emotional Support: Ever had a really bad day where you feel as though no one understands you or you just don’t feel very loved? A study of 177 members of a managed care program showcased that pets provide valuable so-cial support that mimic those of family members for people who are dealing with mental health issues. Even if your situa-tion isn’t so intense, we all know the calm reaction we receive after a hard day and we feel the nuzzle of a loving pet. They are those good friends that love you un-conditionally, and keep those secrets you needed to share with someone. Pets Keep You ActiveL Owning a pet comes with a definite amount of respon-sibility. You are now in charge of an-other creature’s health, but interestingly enough, by walking your pet, you are ac-tually taking charge of your own health,

as well. A study of 2,199 adults, 25% of which owned dogs, showed that those with dogs were more inclined to reach goals for being physically fit. Another good reason to go play catch in the park! They Keep You Out of the Doc’s Office: Adopting a pet has been shown to reduce sleep problems, depression and heart concerns. Pet owners are more likely to stay in good health and visit the doctor less often. Just another great reason to

talk your partner into getting another kitty, after all. They Help You Form Other Relation-ships: Who doesn’t love talking about their pets? Those who own pets are more likely to stay socially connected in their own neighborhoods. Pets give you a reason to get out of your house, take a walk, and discover your neighborhood (and that hot neighbor walking their pet across the street, too!) Perfect ice breaker.

By: Emmaleigh Foster Music isn’t just something that you search for on the radio, what you sing in the shower, or something you load on your iPod. In fact it’s not even just for the pur-pose of entertainment. Music has been rec-ognized for its healing properties for cen-turies. It’s known to stimulate all parts of the brain and aid in education. It can also boost the immune system, improve your mood, and enhance physical and athletic performance. Sleep disorders, high blood pressure, stress, and fatigue have all im-proved through the power of music. The positive effects of music are endless and the

beauty of it is that it’s in and all around us. Music can be felt and heard as early as inside of the womb and based on the most recent studies, pregnant mothers are en-couraged to put headphones or a prenatal speaker up to their stomach and play mu-sic, especially classical music, because of the benefit to the fetus’ brain development. It’s said that music “soothes the savage beast” which must be because the positive energy that is felt by the listener invades all of the senses and speaks to the soul. Listen-ing or performing music is a great way to keep yourself motivated and on a positive track. So if you’re having a bad day or not feeling good then put your favorite playlist on and relax. Let the positive energy flow through you.

Don’t Forget FATHER’S DAY. . .

June 19th!

By: Catherine Foster Some of the greatest athletes, politi-cians and business people in history have had the mindset of positive thinking. If you were to observe a successful person you would see that they act as though they have already accomplished their goals and soon it becomes their reality. Although successful people are not exempt from finding themselves in situations with risk and uncertainty, they are always looking on the positive side of things and because of this mindset they embrace the potential risk and keep a positive outlook which is why 90% of the time they succeed. Keeping a positive attitude is extreme-ly important because it encourages indi-viduals to approach each day with opti-mism which then results in feeling good about life regardless of the situation. In a team environment, a positive attitude encourages the team to work together

The benefits of

being positiveBy: Lisa Ryan

Chances are good that we are going to encounter more people who will com-plain about their lot in life versus meeting those who rejoice in the beauty of the day. The reason is because most people have a propensity to complain rather than be grateful. After all, it’s easy to grumble, and whiners will generally find an eager audience who is willing to commiserate with them. What if we are the ones doing the com-plaining? How do we break our pattern of continual criticism? One of the ways to break the habit of complaining is to begin incorporating gratitude into our lives un-til it becomes a habit. When we become aware of the things we normally com-plain about and then make the decision to contemplate how we can be grateful instead, life will suddenly become more positive and enjoyable.

Since breakthroughs don’t typically happen when we are in our comfort zone, it’s time to do something different in or-der to bring about a positive change and finding things to be grateful for is a great way to start. We bring about what we think about, and our negative thinking is going to beget more negative situations for which we will complain. No matter how much or how little we have, there is always something to appreciate. Con-centrate on the good in your life, and you will attract more good. When someone asks you a question, you have a choice – you can say some-thing negative, or you can say something positive. If you are asked about the job that you may not be happy in, don’t say, “My boss is a jerk,” or “I hate what I do.” Instead, consider responding positively by saying something like, “I’m sure this job is a stepping stone to my perfect job.”

Concentrate on the good – make gratitude a habit

When you find yourself giving into the negative habit of complaining, pause for a moment and consider what you can be grateful for instead. It will make all the difference. Take our Positive Thinkers Network challenge and try refraining from com-plaining for the next thirty days and in-corporating the expression of at least one thing that you are grateful for each day. Drop us a line at [email protected] to let us know how it worked out for you.

with individual styles and personalities. Positive attitude is not only about choos-ing to have a good outlook through good times and bad, but also creating the life that you want. When a person makes the conscious decision to see the “glass half full” they are actually facilitating an environment that will produce the things that are de-sired in their life much more than things that are not. In an article published by The New York Times it was stated that research showed that optimism “can pay dividends as wide-ranging as health, lon-gevity, job success and higher scores on achievement tests.” Staying positive takes a concerted ef-fort and one must guard themselves from the little things that tend to drain

the good feeling energy that comes with positive thinking. Taking caution not to “grumble” about irritating moments, re-fraining from participating in negative conversations or gossip, and getting into the daily habit of positive visualization and meditation are some of the ways to ensure that you stay in a positive mind-set. When a person lives their day to day life with the intent to be positive regard-less of any external circumstances, they will emit the high-vibration energy that is caused by positive thoughts and find that they are soon manifesting the things they want out of life, such as financial security, good relationships, or better health.

(NewsUSA) - Most parents understand the value of sharing reading experiences with their child. However, not all realize that the way they read to their little one, and even how they interact with their child during playtime, can impact learning. Parents can help grow literacy skills while teaching their child to draw, play catch or count numbers. What’s most important is making these experiences fun, engaging and memorable. “The more children interact with reading material, the more active and confident readers they become,” says Dr. Carolyn Jaynes, literacy learning designer at LeapFrog, a developer of innovative, technology-based educational products. “Read with your child at an early age, and build fun daily routines that incorporate reading.” Dr. Jaynes offers the following tips for parents who want to help their children become active, avid readers: * Read often. Practice pays off. The more kids read, the more they grow skills. A nightly bedtime story is a good place to start.

* Make reading fun. The more engaging the reading experience, the more it benefits the child. Make story books come to life by giving characters different voices and adding drama to the narration; when a character acts surprised or sad, change your tone to express the emotion. You want your children to realize that, beneath the surface of the text, there is a great story filled with imagination. * Help kids interact with the reading material. Asking questions will help your child remember the story. Talk with them about the narrative, and ask what they think of a character’s decision. What would they do differently? What do they think will happen next? Encourage them to interrupt you if they don’t understand a word. * Point out the illustrations. Have your child demonstrate their comprehension of the narrative by pointing to story elements in the illustration. For example, ask questions like “Can you point to the bear that looks worried?” or “Where was the wolf hiding before he crossed the road?”

Help your child become an avid readerCreate a love of books

ANY LAB TEST NOW offers professional, convenient and cost-effective ways to take control of your health with an average savings of 46-60%. “There are a lot of people that are uninsured, possess HSA accounts, or simply are unaware that they have a choice when it comes to health testing or how much money we can actually save them,” said owner Janice Blasinsky. In an effort to work with local physicians, Special Physician Referral Pricing is also available where consumers can receive further reduced pricing and take their results back to their physician for diagnosis and treatment. (NewsUSA) - In the heat of summer, unwanted pests are making their way into cooler homes, and they are more than just a nuisance. Pests pose risks to people’s health and property, so it is important for homeowners to take steps to prevent infestations. There are many ways in which homeowners can “pest-proof ” their homes as part of their summer-maintenance routine. Taking preventive measures early in the season is the best approach to keeping pests at bay.

“As the warmer weather brings back numerous pests, early summer is the perfect time for homeowners to thoroughly inspect their homes as part of seasonal maintenance,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Various insects such as ants, flies, termites and cockroaches are frequent summer home intruders, as are those of the stinging variety such as mosquitoes, wasps, bees and yellowjackets. The NPMA recommends a number of methods to keep household pests outside, where they belong. * Seal cracks and small openings in the home’s foundation, around windows and doors.* Repair ripped window screens.* Cut tree branches and plants so that they do not reach too close to the house.* Eliminate sources of moisture or standing water, including bird baths and in clogged gutters.* Inspect the outside of a home for nests built by stinging insects -- typically

Pest-proof your home against summertime critters

found in the eaves under roofs.* Keep kitchen counters clean, and store food like sugary cereals in sealed containers.* Empty garbage containers frequently and seal indoor containers.* Make sure pets’ food and dishes are not left out for long periods of time. Clearing away all things that attract

critters is one of the best ways to pest-proof a house because it denies pests the means of thriving in and around your home. If you find any signs of an infestation after a thorough inspection of your home, you should call a pest professional who can help identify and treat the problem.
