NCI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM INCLINICAL ONCOLOGY AND CANCER

EPIDEMIOLOGYThe National Cancer Institute is accepting applications for a joint fellowshiptraining program in clinical oncology and cancer epidemiology. Physicians withmultidisciplinary training in clinical oncology, epidemiology, and etiologicresearch are becoming increasingly important in identifying cancer risk factorsthat may lead to further insights into human carcinogenesis and preventionstrategies. This fellowship program offers such multidisciplinary training tophysicians who have completed a minimum of two years in internal medicine orpediatrics.

The Clinical Oncology-Cancer Epidemiology Program is part of NIH's ClinicalAssociate Program, and offers three-year fellowships beginning July 1, 1991.The first year consists of clinical training in the Clinical Oncology Program,Division of Cancer Treatment. During this year, associates undertake theprimary care of inpatients and outpatients entered into clinical trials anddevelop expertise in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Openings are availablein the Medicine Branch, the NCI-Navy Medical Oncology Branch, and thePediatric Branch.

During the second and third years, associates spend about 80% of their time inthe Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program, Division of Cancer Etiology, andthe remainder of their time in continued clinical activities in the Division ofCancer Treatment. In the epidemiology program, associates work under thedirection of senior investigators in the Environmental Epidemiology Branch, theClinical Epidemiology Branch, the Radiation Epidemiology Branch, and theBiostatistics Branch. All Branches are involve in research into environmentaland host determinants of cancer. Opportunities for collaborative research mayalso be available in one of the intramural laboratories within the Institute.

This three-year fellowship is designed to fulfill the subspeciality requirementsfor Medical Oncology and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Candidates whohave completed at least one year of clinical oncology training may beconsidered for direct entry into the second year of this program. ClinicalAssociates may enter the U.S. Public Health Service by means of the CivilService or Commissioned Corps. For the Civil Service appointment, thestarting salary is $37,000, with annual increases of $2,000 for each additionalyear in the program. Research Opportunities

Pfizer Inc is an international leader in the researchand development of health care products. The De-partment of Immunology and Infectious Diseases ofthe Central Research Division is committed to innova-tive research leading to the discovery of novel thera-peutics for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Our approach to drug discovery encourages indi-vidual creativity as an important element in guiding ateam effort toward a therapeutic target. This philoso-phy results in an environment that is challenging tothe individual while enhancing group productivity.Scientific growth and development are stimulated byfrequent interactions with prominent scientists inacademia and medicine as well as with members ofthe research community within Pfizer.

A PhD degree, appropriate postdoctoral training anda record of accomplishment in your research en-

deavors is required for each of the following posi-tions. Previous industrial research experience is wel-come but not essential.

Osteoarthritis- We seek both a laboratorysupervisor and a research leader in this area. Thelatter position is distinguished by a requirement formore extensive research experience in OA in orderthat the individual be capable of playing a clearscientific leadership role. Both positions would focuson developing and applying-systems related to thepathogenesis and treatment of osteoarthritis. Appro-priate fields of training include protein biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or experimental pa-thology. For those with in vitro expertise, experiencewith cartilage/chondrocyte biochemistry/metabolismis required (with regulation by cytokines being ofparticular interest). For those whose primary experi-ence has been with in vivo models of osteoarthritis, experimental assessment of mechanisms and phar-macological effects will be important.

Inflammation Models - This position callsfor research experience in the area of acute andchronic in vivo models of pain and/or inflammatorydisease (including, but not limited to, arthritis). It willinvolve the application of known models and estab-lishment of new ones relevant to novel drug targets. The abilityto extract multiple levels of information fromsuch models is particularly important (e.g., sympto-matic, histological, biochemical, electrophysiologi-cal, behavioral).Pulmonary Diseases - We seek two sci-entists to contribute to the discovery of new anti-asthma/allergy therapies. Current interests encom-pass the pharmacologic manipulation of leukocytefunctions/interactions in models of airway inflamma-tion/hyperreactivity. One position calls for experiencewith animal models of pulmonary disease and theirmechanistic basis. Appropriate fields of training in-clude physiology, pathology or pharmacology. Expe-rience with methods and theory of pulmonary me-chanics is especially desired. The second positionwill focus on immune cell regulation, with a particularemphasis on modulation of cytokines, receptors andsignal transduction processes. Appropriate fields oftraining include immunology, biochemistry, cell biologyor pharmacology. For this position, prior research onproblems associated with immediate and delayed hyper-sensitivity reactions is desirable, but not required. We offer a stimulating research environment and anexcellent opportunity for professional recognition andadvancement. In addition, we provide a competitivesalary/benefits package and an opportunity to live inan attractive Connecticut shore community. Qualifiedapplicants should submit their resume and refer-ences in confidence to: Dr. Jerry K. Larson, AssistantDirector, Employee Resources, Central Research Di-vision, Pfizer Inc, Eastern Point Road, Groton, Con-necticut 06340. An equal opportunity employer.

Save hours of time and improve resultsby automating solid phase extraction

with the new ASPEC system

Automate all conditioning, sample application, washingand elution stepsSolid phase extraction is a time-consuming, manually intensive job.Depending on the protocol, it can takeseveral hours a day. By automating theprocedure, ASPEC (Automatic SamplePreparation with Extraction Columns)frees you for more productive work.Ideal for most GC and HPLC applica-tions, ASPEC automates samplepreparation for GC and both samplepreparation and injection for HPLC.

Extraction stepsautomated by ASPEC

Pre-stored software for...* three column conditioning steps* sample application to 108 columns* washing with up to three solvents* application of up to three elution

solvents* on-line HPLC injection

Programmable steps for...* addition of internal standards* extra column conditioning, washing or elution

* variable drying time* sample derivatization or dilution

Built-in software turnsprogramming into an easystep-by-step processAutomation sometimes means com-plication. But not with ASPEC. Threebuilt-in files prompt you for basicparameters such as column size andliquid volumes. Once the parametersare entered, you can store them forfuture use. And when you need tochange parameters, ASPEC makesthat easy, too. You go right to the pa-rameter you need to change withoutre-entering every one.
