Greetings everyone, Merry Christmas and Happy New year. By the time you receive

this column our Entertainment Committee will be well on its way to transforming the Clubhouse for the holiday season. Our Club has many activities planned for the next month including a Toy Drive Cookout on December 1st, Ladies Holiday Dinner on the 6th with the men providing dinner service, Christmas Ships Cookout on the 8th with the following members and their boats participating in the parade: Larry and Vicki Justice, Bryan Barry and Lynne Barbier, Eric and Connie Gazow, David and Franci Stuckey and Paul and Natalie Wilson, the Children’s Christmas Party Bunch on the 10th, Open House on the 17th and a New Year’s Eve party on the 31st.

This will be my final column as your Commo-dore. Donna and I feel blessed to have had the oppor-tunity to serve PYC as your Commodore and First Lady for 2017. In a few weeks our tenure will be over which brings a little sadness, but we realize all good things must end. Your kindness, support and encouragement were always appreciated. We discovered early on being Commodore is truly a respected honor and much is expected in serving in that capacity.

2017 was a good year for PYC. At the top the list has to be Bob Eaton’s gift of the Eaton Bar. The whole project from beginning to end moved along rapidly and we celebrated the official grand opening with Bob Eaton present on October 12th. Special thanks to Bob and everyone who helped make this project a reality.

Most of you have probably heard we did receive a favor-able decision from the City regarding the open moorage permit. This does not complete the process but allows us to continue to move forward in obtaining a permit. Thanks to Frank Bocarde and the Moorage Upgrade Committee for their perseverance in moving this project along.

J Row was replaced this year, which included new docks, pilings, electrical, water and fire systems. Thanks to Dick Dyer and Mike House as well as PYC employees Nick Green and Jaron Yankovich and the many volun-teers who contributed countless hours to this project.

At the beginning of the year I wrote in one of the Com-modore’s columns that PYC needed a van. To date we

COMMODORE’S COMMENTSBy Dave Simonson

have received $5,700 towards our goal of $20,000. Bob Morgan kindly donated an older van to the Club which has been a greatly appreciated interim solution while we continue raising funds for a newer van. A newer van remains a much-needed priority as the van currently in use has high mileage and would not justify costly repairs, if needed over time.

We welcomed 30 new members to PYC this past year, four of them returning members, so including spouses/significant others we have 45 new faces to welcome! Our New Membership Committee is led by Chris Finks and Jolene Coats-Walsh.

Our cruises and other special activities were all well attended and successful. The following is a list of just a few: the St. Patrick’s Day Cruise led by Joe and Mary Kay Brady, Men’s Cruise led by Harry Braunstein, Memorial Day Cruise led by Mike and Tammy House and Jim and Kelly Johnson, 4th of July Cruise led by Larry and Laura Cirotski, Bald Eagle Days led by Cliff Stephens and Becky Belangy, Down River Cruise led by Larry and Vicki Justice, Labor Day Cruise led by Floyd Jones, Barbara Thompson and Harry Braunstein, Beacon Rock Cruise led by Bob Martin, and the Hal-loween Cruise led by Joe and Penny Spaziani. A few of the special events included a Western Cookout hosted by Gil McGregor, Joe Spaziani and Bob Lyon, just recently Mike and Amy Bradford presented an overview of their three-year sailing trip, and earlier this year we had a visit from the cast of Gold Rush.

Thanks to Frank Bocarde for a fun night roasting the Commodore. There were some interesting observations along with many kind words from many of the attendees.

Through the combined efforts of the PYC staff and over 100 member volunteers we enjoy a robustly active club. PYC has many gifted members who love being involved and give freely of their time and resources. The prog-ress made over the past year and the events we all enjoy would not be possible without this dedication and com-mitment to PYC. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on staff, led by our Manager, Daniel Wilkins, and with special thanks to our Executive Chef, Paco Castrejon. I encourage everyone to express appre-ciation to those involved in all the behind-the-scenes operations that make PYC a smooth sailing ship.

Thank you for a great year!

Dave & Donna Simonson

CLUB MANAGER REPORTBy Daniel Wilkins

(continued on page 5)

The Portlight page 3 December 2017

The holidays are finally here and PYC will be bustling with holiday events all month

long. Our entertainment committee has been hard at work all November in the planning for the decorating of the clubhouse and the many holiday events at the club. After the tree is lit be sure to swing by to admire the beautifully decorated clubhouse with your friends and family at PYC.

Our annual Toy Drive Cookout benefiting Toys for Tots will be held on Friday, December 1st. This is a great opportunity to give a gift to a less fortunate child through this great program sponsored by the US Marine Corps. On Friday, December 8th we welcome the Christmas Ship fleet to the Portland Harbor during our Christmas Ship Cookout. There is no better place to see the Christmas Ships than PYC, and we invite your friends and families to join us at this wonderful holiday tradition.

The Entertainment Committee is sponsoring four great events during the holiday season: Ladies Holiday Dinner, Children’s Christmas Party (Breakfast with Santa), the Holiday Open House, and our 2018 New Year’s Eve Gala.

The Ladies Holiday Dinner on Wednesday, December 6th starts with great dining and service, and is topped with some great holiday entertainment this year by Bridge Town Sound.

If you have children or grandchildren (or just love Santa) you won’t want to miss Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 10th. We will have a full breakfast buffet spread and a number of activities for children of all ages. And of course, Santa is coming!

We invite all members to join us for the annual PYC Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 17th. Chef Paco will be putting out an outstanding spread of com-plimentary hors d’oeuvres and the bartenders will be pouring complimentary champagne from 3pm-6pm. This is a can’t miss event, please join us. No guests please.

Lastly, ring in the new year at our 2018 New Year’s Eve Gala featuring dinner and dancing to the music of Sand-point. If you haven’t been this is the party to be at with a great spread of hors d’oeuvres and dinner, a champagne toast, and great music.

We hope that by now you have begun work on your boat or boathouse for your submission into our annual “Marina of Lights” contest. Every year PYC boasts the most beautifully decorated marina with boats and boat-houses lit up for the holidays for everyone to enjoy on the river. We would love to see each and every member participate this year in this great tradition.

The bar and galley will operate Wednesday through Saturday in December (barring special events). Please check the weekly news or online calendar for updated hours of operation during this busy holiday month. Need a place for a small holiday gathering? We can take reservations of up to 20 people for lunch or dinner in the café.

As you may have seen in the weekly news we are working to clean up the dinghy dock and ask that you mark you dinghy with your name and date. Any unmarked dinghy’s will be considered derelict and will be removed and disposed of.

You may have also noticed that we have (or will have) turned off the water in the marina for the winter to avoid freezing pipes. Annually we do this after Thanks-giving and will keep the water off until the risk of freeze

NEW MEMBER PROFILEBy Chris Finks, Membership Chair

As 2017 comes to a close, it ended unbelievably good in its growth and building of new friend-ships. Through November, PYC has a total of

30 new members, 4 of which are re-instated past mem-bers. So including spouses/significant others that’s 45 new faces welcome! As I write this, Thanksgiving is just a couple weeks away and we are already planning for 2018! On that note, PYC will again be an exhibitor at the Portland Boat Show in January (see at right). This month, we are recognizing new member Lori DeMersseman.

LORI DE MERSSEMANLori is a property management professional and longtime boater recently relocating to Portland from Lake Sherwood, California. Lori has two adult children, Julie and Adam, son-in-law Kyle and two young grandsons Hudson and Hank. She enjoys time with her family, kayaking, swimming, volun-

teering and boating. As Lori is currently “boatless”, she is on a quest to find another small cruiser to use on the Columbia with her family. Lori was sponsored by Doug Foster and Barbara Neidig.

Portland Expo CenterPYC Booth Duty: Volunteers Needed!

PYC’s biggest membership drive is in January during the Portland Boat Show where we will have a booth staffed by charming PYC members like you! We need volunteers to set up the booth on Tuesday, January 9th, from 9am to 12pm, and regular shifts beginning the morning of Wednesday, January 10th. There are several shifts available and we need to staff all five days of the show. This year, the PYC booth will be inside the exhi-bition hall in booth #204, not far from the Freshwater News booth. Additionally, we will need volunteers to help take down the booth and return materials to PYC on Monday January 15th. Volunteers’ names will be left in the Will Call area to gain access to the show. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early.

The Portland Boat Show is great fun and an extremely visible way to showcase PYC. Our booth will have plenty of “goodies” to attract show attendees.

Keeping ConnectedBy Chris Finks, Membership Chair

Just another reminder that all of us will keep up the good work to make new members feel welcome by making introduc-

tions and inviting them to join your group during events. Again remember, if you sponsored a new member, please make sure to reach out and show our “PYC hospitality” during some of their first events. All of us, but especially sponsors should remember to stay close to our new members, particularly throughout their first year as a member.

Would you believe the Crab Feed is only a couple of months away?By Mary and Mike Stainsby, Crab Feed Chairmen

Yes, I know, we’re all focusing on Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years and all the associated holiday events and functions, but the PYC Crab

Feed will be here in no time – February 3rd, to be exact, so we want to be sure you get it on your calendar early! As usual, we won’t know the price until early January, but will get that information out to you via the weekly electronic Newsletter and posters in the yacht club just as soon as we know. Meanwhile, if you have any interest in being a volunteer helper for either the morning or the afternoon Crab Feed crew, Mike and I will be at the club for both the Toy Drive Cookout and the Christmas Ships Cookout, as well as the Ladies’ Dinner and the Open House, so come and talk to us. See you around the club!

CRYA REPORTBy Ken Kudrna, CRYA Delegate

A number of events have occurred over the past few weeks that may be of interest.

CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP AT THE MARINE BOARD: Scott Brewen has resigned from his position as director to pursue an oppor-tunity elsewhere in state government. Rachel Graham has been named interim director. Rachel has been associated with OSMB since 2010 and has served most recently as Policy & Environment Manager. OSMB has begun an extensive search for a new director. Inter-ested parties should submit their application by December 3, 2017.

OUTBOARD MOTOR THEFT: This theft occurred at Tyee Yacht Club recently and the occupant of a transient boat anchored near the 205 bridge is the primary person of interest.

MARINA PURCHASE: Harbor One Marina has been purchased by Sundance. What their intended usage will be is unknown at this time.

GOBEL AREA CLEAN-UP: In case you hav-en’t noticed the accumulation of a number of large and presumed derelict vessels in the Gobel area are in the process of being cleaned up. The individual involved in the collection of these vessels has vacated the site and left the mess to be cleaned up by the taxpayers.

The Coast Guard has removed more than 39,000 gallons of oil and oily water, some of which contained PCB’s. This all came from the seven vessels involved.

DSL was the next agency involved and their contractor removed 140 tons of asbestos and asbestos contaminated materials. All but one of the vessels is floating and will be towed to a facility in Troutdale for final breakdown and disposal.

The most well know vessel is the River Queen. Yes, the one that served as a restaurant on the Portland waterfront for many years.

DSL is targeting the completion of the clean-up effort for the end of the year.

Moorage Upgrade ReportBy Frank Bocarde

On November 9th the Hearings Officer for the Portland Bureau of Developmental Services (BDS), rendered a decision on

the City’s granting PYC the right to move ahead on our Open Moorage Project, namely the break-water (BW) and a reconfigured A row. The deci-sion was strongly in our favor and recognized our legitimate non-conforming use (having docks east of the zoning line the city drew across the river). The strength of the decision is largely based on the decades (since 1926) that PYC has spent in that area prior to the city’s annexation. This will also have a positive effect on future Open Moorage projects and should preclude a need to ask the city to move the zoning lines.

This however, is only one piece of the permit puzzle as we now need the construction permit arm of BDS to issue the permit. We hope that by the time you read this that will be in hand. There is also the possibility that the appellant can appeal to the Oregon State Land Use Board (LUBA). He has a 21-day window from November 9th in which to apply.

On November 16th our Board approved the recom-mendation of the Moorage Upgrade Committee to move forward with contractor meetings, adjusted project schedules, etc. to expedite the project.

On another note, we are very close to closing the agreement with Columbia Crossing to purchase the triangle strip on the north side of the moorage to ensure that all PYC dock are on PYC property.

Nick and Jaron are also working to finish up the last stages of the J row installation and Bellingham Marine will be down soon to help finish off the last steps.

This has been a very active, challenging and some-times frustrating year for the Moorage Upgrade Committee, but we have accomplished a lot and we plan to keep going to complete our projects in the future. Please join me in thanking all of the vol-unteers that have been involved in these projects this year as well as all the members that turned out for the appeals hearing on Oct. 2nd, I believe your overwhelming support helped our cause considerably.

2017 PYC Commodore’s Roast photos by Ken Kudrna & Stan Borys

2017 Commodore Dave Simonson and First Lady Donna were subjected to the usual ribbing at this year’s Commodore’s Roast. Around 80 members

enjoyed a dinner featuring Smoked Salmon Pasta, Beef Stroganoff and of course Dave’s favorite, carrot cake for dessert. Vice Com-modore Frank Bocarde used the 1950’s TV show “This is your life” as the backdrop for a power point show depicting Dave through the years. Sandy O’Bryant did some slight photoshop modifications to an assortment of photos showing Dave playing in the dirt as a child (a skill he would continue to rely on in his professional life), flying a WWI fighter, dancing in a chorus line of South Sea Islanders, towing the Dimond Donna through the swamps of Warren Slough on the Upriver Cruise and finally directing traffic from the warm cabin of his earth moving equip-ment while his fellow PYC workers performed the manual labor functions of pulling the old docks onto the beach across from the club.

While the slide show and story of Dave’s life was heart-warming there were lots of other stories from Donna, Bob and Clare Lyon, Jim Sinclair, John Colby reading a letter from Mike O’Bryant (with a few comments of his own), Gil and Nancy MacGregor and perhaps most creatively, both in content and delivery, a poem from Cliff Stephens.

By the end of the evening everyone had had a good laugh and Dave and Donna had escaped relatively unscathed.

Welcome to the Holiday Season!!By Mary Stainsby PYC Sailing Fleet Co-Captain, S/V Kermit

Can you believe it? It seems like just a couple of weeks ago we were enjoying beautiful sunny races with decent (usually!) breezes and great

competition. Now, Thanksgiving is behind us and Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s are just around the corner. Wow!!! I sure hope you’ve been good this year or Santa has a memory lapse – you have put in your request for that new spinnaker and bottom cleaning, haven’t you? If not, you’d better hurry! Hint: a couple of ways to get on the “Nice” list this year: 1. Bring lots of toys to the Toy Cookout on Friday, Dec. 1st, and 2. Purchase (or have your lady of choice do it!) lots of raffle tickets at the Ladies’ Dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 6th (raffle money is being donated to charity to help those victims of the various disasters of the past few months). Note to Santa: those plugs for the cookout and social were my latest attempts to get on the “Nice” list this year!

For those of you who missed the OCSA Tropical Party – me, included – the party was great, with 210 people attending. The food was terrific and everyone had a wonderful time! As with any large event, there were a couple of minor glitches, but in all, it was another highly successful evening. Due to a mis-communication, PYC’s trophies were not distributed, but we will be awarding them at the Sailors’ Dinner on April 6th. For those who can’t wait, here is the list for 2017. On the topic of race results, Sailing on Sundays is once again under way. Racing began on Oct. 19th, and at the time I am writing this, there have been 4 races. Results among the PYC boats:

It’s supposed to be another rough winter, if the weather folks can be believed (Hey! They do get it right occasion-ally!!), so we can hope there will be some better wind on future races this winter.

Meanwhile, that’s all I have for this month. Be safe, have fun, and have a wonderful holiday season!
