November is the start of the holiday season when we start sharing our good

wishes with family and friends, and the club starts to put on her best finery.

The weather will turn cold soon but the club will always provide a warm place of laughter and friendship, a safe haven from the rains and cold, where a cup of warm cheer is always at hand.

And, November is always a busy month at the Yacht Club. On November 11th we all have the privilege to honor our veterans who made the sacrifices that allow us to enjoy the freedoms that we have. November brings with it the promise of change with the election of a new Board of Trustees and Executive Officers, potential Bylaw changes during the Members Annual Meeting and who can forget that November is the month for the Commodore’s Roast.

Thanksgiving is November 27th and it provides us another opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate all the things that make living in America spe-cial. Please keep in mind that the club house and office will be closed on Thanksgiving so that our PYC staff can celebrate this special holiday with their family and friends as well.

One of my favorite cruises is the “Leftover” cruise. Whether you enjoy Thanksgiving at the Outstation or come down afterwards with your left overs, there is never a shortage of good food, friendship and fun. Please plan on trying this cruise if you have not partici-pated in it in the past.

October saw changes in the management of the yacht club. Mr. Daniel Wilkins was hired as Club Manager (please see Daniel’s interview in this Portlight). His first day was October 14. By the time you read this, you likely will have met him.

PYC once again won first place in the Cannon Firing competition during the closing day ceremonies, Oct. 4. Thanks to the team of Greg Allison, Larry Cirotski and Walter Witschard for another outstanding job repre-senting the Portland Yacht Club.

Scotch and Cigar night proved to be a fun, educational and tasty evening. Walter Witschard and his son Kevin presented pictures, history and education about Scotch.

Commodore’s CommentsBy Gil MacGregor

Everyone left the evening learning more about Scotch Whisky than they knew before and everyone had the opportunity to taste six (6) different and distinct whiskies.

Dick Dyer, working with Chef Brien Donaldson, created a four course meal that highlighted the various scotches. Piper Gordon Convoy, a Grade 1 piper (you don’t get better than that) entertained the guests during each break and the staff of Cascade Cigar & Tobacco provided cigars to those that wanted them, that complemented each scotch tasted. But the evening would not have been as big a success without the help of the PYC ladies: First Lady Nancy MacGregor, Becky Belangy, Renee Dyer, Elaine Wilson and Vita MacArthur served the whiskey, the food and generally assisted to make the evening a hit.

Please make sure that your calendars have been cor-rected to show the true date of the Members Annual Meeting, Monday, November 24th. This meeting is very important as you, the membership, approve the 2015 budget, any bylaw changes that are recommended and, most important, elect a new Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee.

I look forward to sharing a friendly hello and cup of cheer with you all through the holidays.

The three jailbirds pictured above are prisoners of love... knit-ting, sewing, beadwork, jewelry and other arts & crafts. Our group of lady PYC members meets on 2nd and 4th Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for coffee, conversation and fun. Along with random “bring and brag”, we explore a new project once a month, led by one of our talented members. If this sounds like fun to you, let me know so you can receive notifications of our plans. (P.S. kibitzers are welcome.) Contact Mary Ann Nitchie, [email protected], or call 503-247-7008.

PYC selects Daniel Wilkins as Club Manager

The PYC Board of Trustees announced Oct. 10, its selection of Daniel Wilkins as the new PYC Club Manager. Daniel is a native Oregonian who grew

up in Eugene and comes to PYC with the management and leadership experience the Club needs now and in the future to meet its ambitious goals. His first day as Club Manager was Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Daniel has been General Manager of both the Rock Bottom Restau-rant and Brewery in Portland and most recently at Palomino Rustico in Bellevue, Washington. He is returning to the Port-land area with his girlfriend, Christina Culbertson, who has accepted a pediatric nursing position in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. She, too, is a native Oregonian.

“Daniel brings the management experience and exper-tise to the Club that we need,” said Gil MacGregor, PYC Commodore. “He has an excellent leadership style that we think will make PYC a better and more commu-nicative place to work for the staff, which in turn will reduce turnover and improve consistency for members.”

“My thanks go to Dick Dyer, Frank Bocarde and Past Commodore Nick Johnson for their help as part of the selection committee,” he added.

Daniel, 36 years of age, graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship at the Lund-quist School of Business. He minored in Computer Information Technology.

As the General Manager at Palomino Rustico, Daniel oversaw 65 employees and all aspects of the operation, including employee development, financial oversight and a $300,000 redesign with a new concept in menus and service styles. At Rock Bottom, he managed 80 employees, where he implemented training and cost improvement measures.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the members and staff first,” Daniel said. “I want to bring new energy and ideas to promote fun at the Club. That will translate into increased member participation and use.”

All the while, he’ll look at all of the Club operational expenditures and make sure spending is in all the right areas. Over the next six months, Daniel will work with the Commodore and the Board to make sure the Club gets more with what is available so that spending will be truly beneficial for the members.

Daniel brings expertise and a wealth of resources in planning special events and functions. He will be con-centrating much of his energy seeking consistency in the bar, dining room and the galley. “These are areas where we can both save and serve members better,” he said.

Larry Justice, Vice Commodore, said he looks forward to working with Daniel. “He’s a people person and will make the members feel welcome,” Larry said. “I’m very much looking forward to working with Daniel and the skills he brings to this Club.” –Editor

New Art in the Dining Room

Next time you are in the dining room, take a look at the new painting of John and Janet Colby’s sailing vessel Iris. It is located on

the south wall and was painted by our own Bill Stevens to commemorate the completion of Iris’ circum navigation. On some of the legs Iris was crewed by fellow PYC members.

Looking good, California Girl takes honors in 2014 Pacific CupBy Timm & Victoria Lessley

Since 1980, the Pacific Cup sail race has run every two years from San Francisco, California to Kaneohe, Hawaii. This year it began July 6, 2014, with 70 boats.

California Girl, a 50-year old Cal 40, owned by PYC members Victoria and Timm Lessley, was first to finish, second in corrected time and third in one design. Here is there impressionist thoughts on the race.

Impressions of 14 days racing to HawaiiImagine –3 miles deep…Inches to closest friends.Farthest from land on earth…Closest to heaven this side of breathing.Horizon to horizon winking stars on a moonlit night…Sleeping to the gentle roar of slipping through the water.Blinding tentacles of lightning from inky clouds…The soft buzz of blue flying fish leaving the bow.Competing against world class sailors…Silent admiration– all victors.Big water… Small boat.

It is difficult for us to share the complete experience of ocean sailing in an article, like facets of a diamond, the brilliance is only revealed when each nuance and angle is observed by the admirer.

This past July, the 50-year-old yacht California Girl participated in a tenth race to Hawaii by her interna-tional crew and owners / sailors Victoria and Timm Lessley.

The course, San Francisco to Kaneohe is 2,070 miles by jetliner and fourteen full days by wind.

California Girl took 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the same instant; 1st to finish, 2nd corrected and 3rd in one design … A few cocktails are required to explain how this is possible … or not.

The 10th Hawaiian race had doors opening and closing - reflecting the balance of our life.

Burial of a 30-year crew member and mother at sea, Betty “Boop” Lessley, her Ninth and one-half trip to Hawaii.

Celebration of three proud sailing countries; New Zealand, Canada and USA...

A marriage proposal on the delivery crew, the beginning of a new life partnership.

Victoria’s 60th Birthday.

25th celebration of the Lessley’s marriage bliss.

Imagine –

“We clear the harbor and the wind catches her sails and my beautiful ship leans over ever so gracefully, and her elegant bow cuts cleanly into the increasing chop of the waves. I take a deep breath and my chest expands and my heart starts thumping so strongly I fear the others might see it beat through the cloth of my jacket. I face the wind and my lips peel back from my teeth in a grin of pure joy.” – L.A. Meyer*“Do it now if you can.”

Closing Day on the Columbia River with Daughters of NeptuneDonna Kay Molenaar, PYC, Chaperone, Daughters of Neptune, 2014 What a spectacular Saturday, October 4th for the 2014 Closing Day ceremonies at the Dolphin Yacht Club in Washougal, Wash. Once again, the Dolphin Yacht Club welcomed the Daughters of Neptune with many sched-uled events.

Throughout the day, CRYA Daughters were busily competing in horse shoes, dinghy parade and the line toss; Tatum Didier, from Longview Yacht Club impressed us all with her direct aim and powerful throw. What a winner!

Also, the Daughters of Neptune organized several ROCK and ROLL Bingo games for all in attendance.

It was the hit of the day and the Daughters raised $657.00 for their future expenses. We thank the PYC Watercrafters for their donated bingo prizes, along with other club members for their generous donations.

Again, thank you to the Daughters of Neptune for helping with a lovely day of sunshine, friendship and representing their yacht clubs. Before sunset, the Daughters lowered the flags that marked a farewell to the many boating adventures of 2014. We left many great memories at the door of the Dolphin Yacht Club.

Thanks for a grand day!

2014 PYC Robert A. Smith Regatta – Remembering GreatnessBy Victoria Lessley

When I first met “Bob” Smith circa 1997(ish), we were on a scotch cruise on Peter and Lynda Hirst’s ARGO from PYC up the Columbia River to “Beer Can Alley” just above the 205 bridge and back. I recall being chided by Mr. Smith for improperly tying up ARGO at the PYC fuel dock... Really? Apologizing and trying to regain respect, I followed his instructions to the letter – then, and still to this day.

Curious as to who my new critic was, I researched Robert A. Smith – Who was this man that was so partic-ular and exacting?

I discovered that Robert was the “in the shadows” genius that created some of the simplest, strongest, and arguably best yachts to sail this world to date… namely Cascades, Magic Carpet and others.

His hulls, with their canoe shape, moderate beam and fin keels were to become cruising classics and see more ocean-going miles than anyone could have thought pos-sible, from Portland, 100 miles from the ocean.

Wow – a powerhouse in Portland? Like Henry Ford, Robert was responsible for legitimizing / designing to an entirely new manufacturing process - fiberglass… the conversion from old world wooden craft to a modern process. Roberts’s designs still are a dominating force in the PHRF world.

Unlike Henry Ford, his name is hard to find in history, but the yachts he designed are on the victory trophy logs in many clubs, yet his boats provided a safe platform for sailors on worldly cruises.

Race captaining a race in his honor and name was a privilege, and, like Mr. Smith’s designs, maybe our courses were different, challenging sailors to excel, and while different from the norm, the best solution for the day. The races were set to stretch out the fast boats, and provide close contact for the smaller club boats, a championship test worthy of the great sailing talent in the Columbia River. I think this is what Bob would have asked for.

A strong turnout occurred, the winds prevailed to get a race off during the entire length of the two days … up to 6 races per class.

Results are available at http://tinyurl.com/nwaucfx

Be proud that our PYC racers were in the mix and held their own!

• Skookum Too George Brown – a formidable crew! (No dog this series?)

• Kermit Michael Stainsby – race guru

• 3 Stooges Fred Hazzard – duking it out on the frontlines

• River Dance Michelle Bennett – steady perfor-mance in her new Cal 20

• Anam Cara Tom Kelly – smoking the big courses in the bad blue J machine

• Velocity Thomas Keffer – stunning performances

• Stray Currents Stan Heil – New J-boat speedster on the river – wild kites

• Lolita Jim Madden – Always a fast boat, dreaming of bigger air.

Closing Day 2014By Ken Kudrna, CRYA Delegate

Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets. This is a major fundraising event which supports CRYA projects and activities. The most important is the role CRYA plays as the boaters’ representative to the Marine Board, the various Sheriff’s Departments, and even the Governor and the Legislature. Your purchases not only help in the funding, but helped Portland Yacht Club win first place in ticket sales again this year.

The CRYA raffle drawing was a highlight after dinner with PYC winning a number of prizes. Winners were: Jolene Costs, Cliff Mills, Larry Cirotski, Mike House, Gil MacGregor, David & Laura Routtu, Don Dell, Dale Richards, Gary Eckert, Sandra Gordon, Judy Ogden

and Norene Kudrna. These members can pick up their prizes at the PYC Office. Sadly, the big prizes went elsewhere, so we’ll try again next year. Thanks again for supporting CRYA .

Dolphin Yacht Club in Washougal, Washington did a great job hosting the Closing Day event again this year. PYC participated in the Cannon Firing Event and sol-idly defended their two previous years’ first place wins. Congratulations to the team of Gil MacGregor, Larry Cirotski, Greg Allison and Walter Witschard. The team of Justice and Kudrna need more practice or luck at the game of Horseshoes.

Consider putting the first Saturday in October on your calendar for next year. It is a fun day of contests and visiting with other clubs’ members over lunch and dinner.

Members AbroadSo Long and Thanks for all the Tootsie RollsBy Michael & Amy Bradford

Portland Yacht Club members Mike and Amy Bradford left their slip on B-Row early in September to cruise aboard S/V Pelagic for two years, along with their three children, Anakena age 4, Porter age 9 and Zander age 11.

On the morning of September 10th, I removed our good strong dock lines and replaced them with some old tattered lines. Later that afternoon, I started the engine and gave Zander and Porter each a knife so they could “Cut the Dock Lines.” With the dock lines and our old lifestyle severed, we departed PYC and headed downriver towards the salty water on our long-anticipated two-year adventure of exploration and travel.

As we waved goodbye to PYC, my 4-year-old daughter started crying. “Are you gonna miss your friends, our home, your toys, the Grandparents?” “No”, she said, “I’m gonna miss the tootsie rolls at the Yacht Club.”

Our first destination was the PYC outstation and then onward to Astoria. We picked up some extra crew in Astoria and promptly headed offshore into rolling, confused seas. The transition from a land schedule to one at sea is always diffi-cult. Heading South, sometimes in heavy fog and sometimes in sunshine, it was apparent that my older son Zander was in his element. Before arriving in San Francisco, we saw over 50 whales, including Orcas, Fin and breaching Humpbacks.

We stayed at Horseshoe Cove in San Francisco Bay, which is practically under the North tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. We rested and visited with family and took care of various maintenance issues on the boat. On the way South, the goose-neck bracket had cracked so we had a boatyard in Alameda fabricate a new one. After a week in the yard, we were again eager to set sail and promptly headed out under the Golden Gate Bridge and turned left.

We enjoyed anchoring in Halfmoon Bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey and along the way it was apparent the three kids were really enjoying this new lifestyle. While in Monterey, the boys donned their wetsuits, masks and snorkels and swam in the kelp forest in front of Cannery Row. Harbour Seals and Sea Otters approached us within 3 feet and the kids were delighted. Later that night during dinner on the boat, we were surprised to hear a loud and rapid banging against the hull. I ran on deck expecting to see a boat hitting us but was sur-prised to see another sea otter banging a clam against the hull of our boat. When I told him to beat it, he swam away but I promptly heard him banging his dinner against the boat next to us in the anchorage.

After Monterey, we made our way down the coast off Big Sur with an overnight passage to San Simeon Cove, where we dropped the dinghy in the water and made a beach landing to visit Hearst Castle. The kids enjoyed the opulent grandeur of the mansion. It was a scorching 97° during our tour and we all really wanted to jump into Hearst’s Neptune Swimming Pool.

Back at the cove, we rehearsed the dinghy surf launching and then made a flawless dry launch through the breaking beach waves. San Simeon was rolly at night so we woke up early and hauled up the anchor and departed in the fog for Morro Bay. At the breakwater for Morro Bay, the fog left us with about 200' visibility, so we entered the bay using radar and GPS. Once in the calm estuary, we enjoyed the hospitality of the Morro Bay Yacht Club and their dock, washing machines and shore power.

We are now in the Channel Islands. We just departed San Miguel Island this morning. San Miguel is the most isolated and least visited of the channel islands. The beach is cov-ered with belching elephant seals and the kelp forests made for excellent snorkeling. We didn’t see a speck of trash in the water or on the beach. As I write this, we are passing Santa Rosa Island with tonight’s destination being Santa Cruz Island. We have two weeks until the Baja Haha rally to Mexico begins, so we plan to explore the islands for another week before sailing for San Diego. San Diego will be our last chance to stock up on our favorite American food items and spare parts before sailing for the Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez in Mexico.

Log of OrciniusBy John LeDoux and Lisa Danger

PYC Members John LeDoux and Lisa Danger departed the Portland area and their Vancouver, Wash. home Sept. 15, 2011 for a circumnavigation aboard their catamaran Lagoon 440, Orcinius. They are still at it and as of Oct. 11, 2014 are in the Yasawa Islands in Fiji. Here’s an excerpt from their blog upon their arrival in Tubou, Lakeba in Fiji. To read more and catch up with John and Lisa, go to http://www.sailblogs.com/member/orcinius/.

We were met at the wharf by a couple of kids on bikes, and a nice young fellow named John who took us into the vil-lage to meet the Turaga ni koro (the chief’s right-hand man), Alifereti. Alifereti was our gracious host the rest of our stay in Tobou - walking us through the village, sharing stories of the past, and making sure we saw all the important sites within the village. There is a lot of history in Tubou. The island of Lekaba was one of the two poles of power in traditional Fiji (back before us pulangis showed up), and today is still the most important island in southern Lau…. There are several beautiful buildings in Tubou, but one that stood out the most for John and I was the Methodist Church. I cannot believe it is not even mentioned in any of our guide books. The church itself is about 100 years old, but has a new tin roof placed over the top of the original roof. Alifereti took us inside – and it was absolutely gorgeous! The ceiling was amazing! I’m not sure how to describe it, but it was woven with wood and a fiber binding - not a single nail in the ceiling. Then covered with the traditional thatch, which is now covered by the protective tin roof. There were 12 posts along the sides of the interior, one for each of the 12 apostles. The front of the church had beautiful wood chairs and podiums, and the church itself was laid out in the shape of a cross. Sept. 21, 2014.
