MLS GAME INFORMATION

PORTLAND TIMBERS vs PHILADELPHIA UNION JELD-WEN FIELD, Portland, Ore. 7:30 p.m. PT (FOX Soccer/Deportes) May 6, 2011 (WEEK 8; MLS Game 68)

Two of the more impressive teams in recent weeks meet when the Portland Timbers play host to Philadelphia Union on the inaugural FOX Soccer “Soccer Night in America.” The Timbers are still unbeaten in league play in their Jeld-Wen Field home after a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake last weekend. Union won a fourth game by a 1-0 scoreline last weekend, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes at home. REFEREE: Silviu Petrescu. Coaches record: Peter Nowak v POR: first game … John Spencer vs. PHI: first game PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers returned home and once again came away winners, defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. The Timbers have 10 points from 7 games, opening the week in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came in the 22nd minute. Freed down the left, Kalif Alhassan crossed a ball to the front of the RSL net and from a crowd Kenny Cooper knocked a short volley with his right foot past Real 'keeper Nick Rimando.

Timbers coach John Spencer made two changes to the team that lost 3-0 to the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. Darlington Nagbe and Diego Chara came into the lineup, in place of James Marcelin and Steve Purdy.

PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-4-2): Troy Perkins - Jeremy Hall, Eric Brunner, Mamadou Danso, Rodney Wallace - Darlington Nagbe (Sal Zizzo 82), Jack Jewsbury, Diego Chara, Kalif Alhassan - Kenny Cooper (Ryan Pore 92+), Jorge Perlaza (James Marcelin 74).

TEAM NEWS The RSL victory was the a third in three games at home for the Timbers. They are the only team with nine

points from three games at home in MLS; RSL is the only other team not to have dropped points at home this season.

"Other teams are going to come (to Jeld-Wen Field) and know that (we) are going to fight for 90 minutes," Portland defender Mamadou Danso said to The Oregonian.

Perhaps more important to the club, the Timbers were able to keep a clean sheet for the first time in MLS. “I felt we showed a lot of character after last week, with the (three) goals that we conceded [at LA], to not

concede this week and be mentally strong and mentally tough,” Timbers coach John Spencer said.. Troy Perkins was making his second start in goal after missing the first five matches of the season recovering

from injury. “[RSL] whipped in some good balls from the sides and obviously have guys on the end of them that were flying

by,” Perkins said. “But I give credit to the guys in front of me. They dealt with it and made it easy for me.” Darlington Nagbe, the second overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, made his first MLS start, in a wide midfield

role opposite Kalif Alhassan. Alhassan recorded his team-leading fourth assist, all coming in the last four games.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“Both guys on the outside are very dynamic, very quick, great 1-v-1 players and that’s something we’re looking to do. Those guys are very dangerous on the attack,” said Spencer.

Jeremy Hall moved from a wide midfield role to a fullback spot with the addition of Nagbe to the lineup. "Pretty much all we did this week was work on our defensive shape after having that (3-0 loss) in Los Angeles,"

Danso said. "It's kind of like we just have to take it out of our minds and keep working." However, the Jeld-Wen Field run came on to an end on Tuesday, when the Timbers lost 1-0 in extra time to the

San Jose Earthquakes in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match. The game’s lone goal was scored by Ike Opara in the 120th minute, heading home a Sam Cronin cross.

Here’s the Timbers team:Troy Perkins, Freddie Braun, Kevin Goldthwaite (Mamadou Danso 98), David Horst, Steve Purdy, Sal Zizzo (Darlington Nagbe 111), James Marcelin, Adam Moffat, Rodrigo Lopez (Jeremy Hall 110), Ryan Pore, Spencer Thompson

PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union returned to action after a weekend off and once again came away 1-0 winners, this time defeating the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon at PPL Park. Union have 13 points from 6 matches on the year, starting the week in second place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

Union went a man down just before halftime when defender Jordan Harvey shown a straight red card by referee Mark Geiger after a clash with a sliding Chris Leitch.

But the home side scored the game's lone goal from the penalty spot in the 76th minute. Union midfielder Amobi Okugo dribbled into the box and attempted a cross that appeared to hit San Jose defender Jason Hernandez in the hand, and after Geiger pointed to the spot, Sebastien Le Toux converted.

Union manager Peter Nowak made two changes to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC at PPL Park. Roger Torres and Danny Mwanga came into the side, for Stefani Miglioranzi and Kyle Nakazawa.

PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-1-2-3): Faryd Mondragon - Sheanon Williams, Danny Califf, Carlos Valdes, Jordan Harvey (sent off 41) - Amobi Okugo - Roger Torres (Michael Farfan 46), Keon Daniel - Sebastien Le Toux, Danny Mwanga (Stefani Miglioranzi 46), Carlos Ruiz (Kyle Nakazawa 83)

TEAM NEWS Union are tied for the most wins in MLS this season (4), while having scored the fewest goals (5). They won

their fourth game of the season by a 1-0 scoreline in Saturday’s victory against San Jose. Their only loss this season also came in a 1-0 game.

"I spoke to the guys at halftime," Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon said. "I said, 'Guys, this is a typical 1-nil win for warriors.' And we showed today we are warriors. We played as warriors. Today we showed everybody what we're made of and we have to continue like this."

Mondragon leads MLS with four shutouts in six games, tied with William Hesmer of Columbus. In their inaugural season, Union had just two shutouts all year.

“This win shows a lot about our character,” said midfielder Kyle Nakazawa. “We’ve come a long way from last year to this year as a team. I think all of our players believe in each other. We were a man down and kept fighting for each other out there. It was a great win and I think the confidence is strong when you can win a match like this down a man.”

When Harvey was sent off just before halftime, rookie Michael Farfan came in at left back in a reshuffle following the break in his MLS debut.

“Big praise goes to Michael Farfan,” Nowak said. “We wanted to make sure to keep our composure and have the chance to go forward with Michael’s speed. Basically we played three in the back because he was coming up and down.”

With Harvey suspended, Farfan stands a good chance of starting at left back in the Portland match. A second-round pick out of the University of North Carolina, Farfan was a midfielder in college.

“He did a fantastic job,” Danny Califf said. “He came in and played with a lot of confidence. He was strong in his tackles and he knew when to step up and when to stay back. I can’t say enough about the kid.”

The goal from the penalty spot was the first of the season for Sebastien Le Toux, who led Union with 14 goals in 28 appearances last season and was selected to the MLS Best XI. He also has one assist this season.

“This year, we’re taking advantage of our opportunities. I was really happy for the fans who have been behind us all year long. Down a man, it felt great to get this win and the three points,” Le Toux said.

HEAD COACH JOHN SPENCER After a standout 18-year professional playing career, Glasgow, Scotland, na-tive John Spencer served as an assistant coach for the Houston Dynamo under head coach Dominic Kinnear for nearly five seasons (2006-2010). He helped lead the Dynamo to back-to-back MLS Cup championships in 2006 and 2007 and four consecutive playoff appearances. From 2006-08, Spencer also coached the Dynamo Reserves, guiding the Dynamo Reserves to the 2008 MLS Reserve Division championship. On Aug. 10, 2010, Spencer was named the first head coach in MLS Timbers history, and on April 14 of this season, Spencer earned his first win as an MLS head coach as the Timbers poured in four goals in a 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire. As a player, Spencer played for such noted English clubs as Chelsea, Everton and Queens Park Rang-ers, and Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers. In MLS, Spencer starred for the Colorado Rapids from 2001-04, becoming the only player to be the team’s MVP and scoring leader in the same season more than once. Spencer, 40, began his professional playing career in 1987 with Rangers. As a striker, he played for several top-flight clubs over 14 seasons in Scotland and England, most notably amassing 43 goals with English-power Chelsea (1992-96). Spencer joined MLS and the Rapids in 2001 and was considered the team’s undeniable leader due to his skill and work ethic. During his time with Colorado, he played in 88 games and his 37 goals ranks among franchise career leaders. Spencer set the club’s single-season mark for goals (14) and career mark for assists (17), was a two-time MLS Best XI selection (2001, 2003) and was a finalist for the league’s MVP award in 2003. The two-time MLS All-Star (2001, 2003) captained the Rapids to three straight playoff appearances from 2002-04. Spencer etched his name into Rapids history on Aug. 30, 2009, when he was inducted to the Rapids Gallery of Honor. During his playing career, Spencer earned 14 caps with the Scotland National Team from 1994-97. He earned his first cap for Scotland against Russia on November 16, 1994, in Glasgow. His favorite soc-cer memories include playing for Scotland against England at Wembley Stadium in the 1996 European Championship. He last appeared for Scotland on May 27, 1997, in a friendly against Wales.

TIMBERS TOP REAL SALT LAKE 1-0 ON COOPER STRIKEOn a game-winning goal by forward Kenny Cooper, the Portland Timbers defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 before a sellout crowd of 18,627 at JELD-WEN Field on Saturday, ending an 18-game unbeaten run by Real Salt Lake in league play. Cooper scored the decisive goal in the 22nd minute and the Timbers held their lead with a shutout performance from goalkeeper Troy Perkins, handing Real Salt Lake its first loss in regular-season league play since July 18, 2010. At 18 games, Real Salt Lake’s unbeaten streak was the third-longest in MLS history. Perkins recorded three saves to earn the first shutout in Timbers MLS history, Cooper scored his third goal of the sea-son, midfielder Kalif Alhassan logged his fourth assist and midfielder Jack Jewsbury recorded his second helper as the Timbers earned their third straight win at home. The Timbers staked a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on a free kick play on the left side. Taken quickly, Jewsbury rolled the ball down the left touchline for Alhassan, who then delivered a sharp cross in to the back post. Cooper, with the advantage on his marker, one-timed the ball with his right boot into the back of the net from a couple yards out, ending a 213-minute scoreless run for Real Salt Lake.

TIMBERS FALL TO SAN JOSE 1-0 ON LATE OVERTIME GOALA last-minute, game-winning goal by defender Ike Opara in overtime lifted the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers in a hard-fought U.S. Open Cup play-in match in front of 11,412 at JELD-WEN Field on Tuesday night. The Timbers and Earthquakes played scoreless through regulation and nearly all of overtime before Opara struck the winner on a header off a cross by midfielder Sam Cronin in the 120th minute, ending the Timbers’ chances of competing for the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. It took until the final minute of overtime for either side to break through and it was the Earthquakes’ first goal in two matches that sealed the victory. From the right side, Cronin delivered an out-swinging ball into the box. Opara was on the receiving end and got just enough of the ball to bounce his header past Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins and inside the near post for the decisive goal. The Earthquakes advance to host Chicago in a third-round play-in match later in May.

PERKINS POSTS FIRST SHUTOUT IN TIMBERS MLS HISTORYGoalkeeper Troy Perkins, making his first home start against RSL Saturday, recorded three saves while the backline of Rodney Wallace, Eric Brunner, Futty Danso and Jeremy Hall did its part to post the Timbers' first shutout in MLS play. With Hall mak-ing his first start as a defender this season, the Portland defense held Real Salt Lake to seven shots (3 shots on goal), the fewest by a Timbers opponent in 2011. With RSL desperately trying to create scoring chances over the final 10 minutes, Perkins made a crucial stop on a header by defender Nat Borchers in the 89th minute.

A PLACE TO CALL HOMEAfter spending the first three weeks of their inaugural MLS campaign on the road, the final stages of renovation work at JELD-WEN Field were completed in time for the Timbers to debut their impressively refurbished home on a national stage. The Timbers, in front of sold-out crowds of 18,627, scored seven goals on their way to opening up the stadium with a pair of wins over the Chicago Fire and FC Dallas in mid-April. JELD-WEN Field underwent a $36 million renovation that transformed the already iconic downtown Portland venue into one of the most unique and intimate soccer venues in North America. JELD-WEN Field improvements include the addition of an entirely new east-side seating section that will house the new KeyBank Club and premium club seats, the Widmer Brothers Southern Front deck behind the south goal that will provide unique vantage points ideal for casual group seating, a new, state-of-the-art video board that features the latest in high-definition technology for an enhanced fan experience and a new FieldTurf playing surface well-suited for the variety of sporting and community events that will be featured each year at JELD-WEN Field. Phase I of construction, which included foundation work for the new eastside seats, began in early 2010, while renovation on a larger scale began on Sept. 7, 2010, as demolition commenced following the Division-2 Timbers’ home schedule. JELD-WEN Field, located in the heart of the city, was originally constructed in 1926 and has undergone a number of transformations over the years, none more substantial than the current renovation. The stadium has housed some of the most memorable events in its 85-year life, including presidential visits, an Elvis Presley performance in 1957, Pele’s last official game as a professional and the

2003 Women’s World Cup. It was home to the NASL Timbers from 1975-82 and most recently served as the home grounds for the USL Timbers from 2001-10.

HOW CAN I ASSIST YOU?Midfielder Kalif Alhassan found Kenny Cooper inside the six-yard box with a left-footed cross for the decisive goal Saturday against Real Salt Lake, giving him at least one assist for the third consecutive home game. Per Elias Sports Bureau, Alhassan became only the third player in MLS history to record an assist in each of his first three career home games, joining LA Galaxy's Carlos Hermosillo (1998) and the New York Red Bulls' Jorge Rojas (2008). As of May 4, Alhassan is tied with LA Galaxy's David Beckham for third in all of MLS with four assists, and shares the league lead with seven others with two game-winning assists.

HOME COOKINGIn their first three MLS regular-season games at the friendly confines of JELD-WEN Field, the Timbers have outscored their opponents 8-4 en route to a 3-0-0 mark. Only Portland and 2-0-0 Real Salt Lake remain perfect at home in MLS play while four others are unbeaten at home (New York, Philadelphia, Columbus at 3-0-1, LA Galaxy at 2-0-1). The Timbers are the first expansion franchise in MLS history to win their first three regular-season home games and the first franchise to begin its history with three straight home wins since 1996, when LA Galaxy won their first seven home matches and FC Dallas won its first four.

FIRST STARTS Five different Timbers players made their first, first-team starts of the season in Tuesday night's U.S. Open Cup play-in loss to San Jose: Freddie Braun, Rodrigo Lopez, Adam Moffat, Spencer Thompson and Sal Zizzo. Saturday's win over RSL saw midfielders Darlington Nagbe and Diego Chara both make their first Timbers starts.

UNION HALLMidfielder/defender Jeremy Hall is the only player on the Timbers' roster who has tallied a point against the Philadelphia Union in his career, recording an assist on Sani Ibrahim's opening goal in a 2-1 New York Red Bulls home win on April 24, 2010.

ON YOUR SIDEFor the first time this season Saturday, the Timbers were whistled for fewer offsides calls than their opponent. Portland entered Saturday's win over Real Salt Lake with a league-leading 30 offsides infractions, but committed just one, compared to three by RSL. Forwards Kenny Cooper (13) and Jorge Perlaza (12) lead MLS in offsides.

MWANGA RETURNS TO ROSE CITYUnion forward Danny Mwanga returns to Portland, where he starred for Jefferson High School and Westside Metros International. After graduating in 2006, Mwanga took his skills down I-5 to Corvallis, where he spent two years at Oregon State Univer-sity, collecting accolades such as the 2008 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, 2009 MAC Hermann Trophy finalist and 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year. The now 19-year-old was then made the first overall selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by Philadelphia and scored seven goals while adding four assists in 24 games (17 starts) for the Union in 2010, when he was named a finalist for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award.

SCOUTING THE UNIONAfter going through the growing pains as an expansion franchise with a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2010, the Philadelphia Union have busted out of the gates in 2011, winning four of their first six matches and occupying second place. As the league's lowest-scoring team (five goals in six games), the Union have been winning with defense early on, allowing just two goals and posting four shutouts, including wins over Houston and New York and a draw against Seattle. 39-year-old goalkeeper and German Bundesliga veteran Faryd Mondragon, one of four Colombians on the roster, has been largely responsible for the Union's early defensive prowess, directing a backline that has yielded just 13 shots on goal. That backline, consisting of captain Danny Califf, Jordan Harvey, Carlos Valdes and She-anon Williams, has started all six games together in 2011. 19-year-olds Roger Torres and Danny Mwanga - a 2010 Rookie of the Year runner-up - have shined early on in their MLS careers, while the duo of veteran Carlos Ruiz and 2010 Best XI selection Sebastien Le Toux at the top of Peter Nowak's 4-4-2 have provided goals at the right times. With their 'defense first' tactic working so far, the Union have drawn the atten-tion of everyone in the league in their second season.

UNION HEADS WEST      Philadelphia Union will head to Portland, Oregon to take on their second expansion side this season, the Portland Timbers. This will be

HOMETOWN HOMECOMING

Danny Mwanga returns to his hometown of Portland tonight, just one year after the Union took the ,

the second trip to the west coast the season for the Union, who made their first trip out to Los

Angeles in Week 3. Portland have been playing well this season, with a very respectable 10 points through 7 games and a 3-3-1 record heading into the match with Philadelphia. While Vancouver selected two players from the Union in the 2010 Expansion Draft, Portland opted not to select any. Philadelphia are coming off a hard-earned victory against San Jose last week, earning three points at home

Jefferson High School, where he scored an astonishing 53 goals in just nine games. He moved on to Oregon StateUniversity, where the dynamic player won the PAC-10 Freshman of the Year award in 2008 and Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2009. In only his second season with OSU, Mwanga led the PAC 10 in multiple offensive categories against San Jose last week, earning three points at home

despite being down a man for nearly 50 minutes. The Union are in search of their second road victory this season, their first coming against Houston in Week 1.

LAST MLS MATCH      Philadelphia Union enter their match with Portland after a rollercoaster match last week at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. After being down a man for nearly 50 minutes, Phil d l hi bl t i d t i t t i

Mwanga led the PAC-10 in multiple offensive categories including goals scored (14), combined goals and assists per game (1.67), goals per game (0.78) and game-winning goals (5).

SOCCER NIGHT IN AMERICA Philadelphia was able to grind out a 1-0 victory to remain

undefeated this season at PPL Park. The match was intensely physical from kickoff, and both teams knew they would be in for a battle from the start. There were opportunities for both sides to get on the board in the first half, but neither teams was ultimately able to capitalize. Philadelphia had their first good look when midfielder Roger Torres unleashed a strike on goal that was sent out for a corner by San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch. In the 39th minute, Union forward Carlos Ruiz had a close-range attempt that was blocked before it found its way on net

Tonight’s match kicks off Fox Soccer Channel’s “Soccer Night in America.” FSC will debut a new graphics package and the addition of super slow-motion camera replays. Former U.S. men’s national soccer team and MLS players Eric Wynalda and Christopher Sullivan will lead pregame, halftime and postgame coverage. JP Dellacamera and former MLS player Kyle Martino will provide play-by-play and analysis for the telecastsblocked before it found its way on net.

In what looked to be the turning point of the match, Philadelphia defender Jordan Harvey received a red card in the 41st minute for what the referee believed was a kick to the body of Chris Leitch as he worked himself free from a challenge. The Union remained determined in the second half, and their hard work finally paid off in the 76th minute. Midfielder Amobi Okugo worked his way into the box, and earned a penalty kick when his cross deflected off the arm of San Jose defender Jason Hernandez. Sebastien Le Toux buried the PK and powered the Union on to a 1-0 victory.
