MULTI-CUBE Lazarevac, Serbia | competition | summer ‘12

Page 7: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic
Page 8: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic

Multi-cube is a project focused on a collective housing solution done by a group of six for a competition organized by the city of Belgrade. The main theme of the project is duality. The project site is treated with two different kinds of space, one on the inside and the other on the outside of the block. While the living room and the kitchen are always turned towards the outside, bedrooms look out over the inner garden.

08|09 Multi-cube

The external facade is made out of blocks, where each type of apartment has unique dimensions within the block structure. Therefore the facade can be “read” and follows a certain pattern. Furthermore, common spaces where residents can meet and socialize periodically ‘occur.’

The inner facade is meant to be mostly transparent, but also using a special kind of pattern that produces an intriguing play of light and shadow. Another important issue was the open space and the creation of many attractive ambients around. The whole pro-ject makes visitors wonder what is inside and invites them to discover it.

This project represents my Master thesis and it started to develop in a group of three, at ”La Sapienza” University in Rome during my exchange program. While the main con-cept of the site was shaped in a group, in the next steps each member focused on solv-ing one building individually. Later on in Belgrade, upon those foundations from Rome, I developed the project more thoroughly and in greater detail, eventually graduating with the highest grade.

The project involves the development of a system of 4 buildings and the public spaces connecting the area between the existing Museum of Ships in Nemi, Rome and the nearby lake front. These four buildings accommodate activities related to the exhibiting function completing the museum offer. They correspond to the four distinct functional areas with particular attention to the archaeological context and natural surroundings.

The main idea was to overlap three different pieces of a puzzle: water, grass and built structures presented as tracks. In one direction tracks are going towards the lake but in the other there is a system of paths parallel to the lake and those two entities overlap throughout the entire site forming an harmonious interwaving. The green, wavy roof of the buildings is used as a place where visitors come to relax but also other areas offer a variety of different contents.

Weaving produces strength by combining two weak systems in a reciprocal pattern.*

OVCA HOUSING Belgrade, Serbia | competition | fall ‘11

Page 23: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic
Page 24: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic

The main idea for this project of social housing was to create a cozy neighbourhood and an open public space in between. The proposition for the competition considers es-tablishing three separate entities which would be built in three different phases. Being very limited with space although having boundless fields of crops and no other settle-ment around, the concept was to turn edifices towards inside rather than outside.

Other than residential buildings the competition proposed positioning a school, a kindergarten and a nursing home. The school is situated outside of the residential grid as it needs more space for different kind of sport facilities while the two other buildings are put inside of the blocks.

Santorini, Greece | 2nd year master | spring ‘11SUSTAINABLE LODGING

Page 29: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic
Page 30: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic

Santorini resort centre is a fully sustainable hotel which I designed with my Spanish colleague in Rome. The location is very attractive and it draws many tourists throughout the year but also the nature is taken into account while thinking on the design. There are two entities on this resort, one represents the hotel centre with functions like lobby, restau-rant, gym, retail, pool and sauna while the other part is composed of accommodation units turned towards the open sea and beach. Rooms are lined in a way that each room has its own intimate terrace giving the visitors a feeling of serenity. Each room is naturally venti-lated, has solar panels and rainwater collectors.

The Museum of Asian culture represents a place where all cultures collide. This is not only a exposition space since beneath it there is a piazza where people meet and interact. The museum’s emphasized form represents the unity of the Asian continent but also a vol-ume that reacts with Termini train station´s physique. There are strong links connecting the ground floor and the upper part of the museum which also represent a logical extension of the Termini corridor. The museum is inclined so the square can receive more sun. The interior space is entirely open and transparent being divided only by platforms of varying heights.

PARAMETRIC WALL Pancevo, Serbia | 1st year master | spring ‘10

Page 37: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic
Page 38: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic

Concrete is used more than any other construction material in the world. This project presents a design for a 700 meter long and 3 meter tall concrete wall. The purpose of this exercise was to develop understanding of the relationship between the fabrication process-es and the design.

Work process was structured around the series of plaster models meant to simulate casting techniques used in the building industry. The project is parametric and uses differ-ent type of moulds to produce texture effects. As the moulds change the whole structure gets different shapes and therefore can be more or less stable. Finally the chosen design represents a random distribution of the holes and when put several times next to each other it does not give the impression of repetition.

Variations and possibilities

The project geometry is developed around a uniform tilling system. Initially, rhombitrihexagonal pattern is applied along the terrain contour lines to form a set of cascading platforms enabling better use of space and opening views towards the sea.

In a relation with pedestrian and other com-munications, two geometrical shapes, triangle and quadrant, form lots for its inhabitants. The pro-ject has the power to change its shape, as system can adapt to the various requirements of its users therefor there are several variations of number of inhabitants, 100 units, 150 units and 200 units in order to observe in what way the whole complex can change.

Page 47: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic
Page 48: Portfolio / Filip Mitrovic

This project is the final result of the exercise started with the Rhino tutorial earlier that semester. From then on I gradually developed formal strategies around primal architectural reasoning. Parametric modelling tools were exploited for the development of structural, or-ganizational and geometrical logic. I examined in what way the simple brick can be remod-elled maintaining some of its features through a parametric modelling. By increasing the number of modules and the size and shape of the openings I managed to develop a great number of different kinds of simulations. From that number I picked four most typical rep-resentatives and created a scale 1:1 model of all four of them.

This hotel complex which I designed as my bachelor thesis is a free-standing structure and it is composed of three parts. The first part is turned towards the city library having the same height. In this segment there is a restaurant, administrative offices and shops at the same level. The second part accommodates casino, billiards, pool, disco club while the third part consists of atower containing apartments and rooms and it is 12 floors high. The tower is inclined to give a better view to visitors but also not to cast a shadow on the square in front of it and creates a logical ending to a route from the Terazije square opening with Pal-ace of Albania, along the Prince Mihailova.

I studied urban planning for one semester and while the first part of the project was done in a group its main development was done individually. The project site is the so called Third Belgrade which is very close to the centre but on the other side of the Danube, thus badly connected.

While discussing what values we are going to support in our project, my colleges and I started to develop each part of the site alone. My task was to find a way to introduce sport activities together with apartment blocks. I separated them as two entities. The main idea is to create an attractive open space and connect it with apartment blocks creating many unique small areas with different atmosphere.
