About the WorksBanana leafs series, Indonesia, 2010
Environmental issues have become a major concern that affect large numbers of people throughout the world. In this photgraphic series attention is drawn to the environment and how human life is connected to its “habitat”.
The Banana tree is identical to the tropics in particular countries like Indonesia and Latin America. It’s easy to plant and grows everywhere in the wild. The banana counts various species, all different in nature and taste which makes it polulair among large groups in society. Almost every part of the tree can be manufactured and used, the fruit, the leaf, and even the stem.
On the other hand we also know that industrialization has changed the way of living and that people have become increasingly consumptive. Most of the products that appear in commercials and media are tailored and designed for women. Cloths, shoes, cosmetics, and accessories which appeal to the current standard of beauty and modern lifestyle. This type of marketing drives on the stereotype of the “well educated” and “successful modern women”.
“I try to Imagine the future and the past, modern and traditional without the dominant im-pact of markt capitalism and media. A turning point to a life where people respect the rules of nature and the role of community based home industries. When the balanced use of organic materials such as leafs, wood and herbs, have a sustainable impact on the climate and environment. Other than mass consumption and waste of plastic that threatens human life and generations to come”.
Banana Leafs is a photographic statement that questions the impact of today’s global development and the impact it has on the environment.
