REVIEW:Predimensionamiento: definición de la estructura portante en arquitectura is a publication with an academic emphasis. It introduces the principles of structures in Architecture. This research is organized in two parts: the first part presents the concepts of structural design, and the second part introduces basic methods to dimension structural elements. The first part explains the Colombian Seismic Law, emphasizing the properties of building materials and the behavior of structures according to different loads.

The second part indicates the guidelines to dimension structural elements in reinforced concrete, steal, and wood. Additionally, the effect of non-structural on the structure is also analyzed.

REVIEW: Eficiencia Lumínica en Arquitectura deals with the importance of Light in Architecture. It is not just a technical handbook to understand the complexity of Daylight; it is also a review of contemporary Architecture engaged to reduce the environmental burden through the use of this natural element.

The research is organized in five chapters. The first two chapters introduce Light as a physic phenomenon. The third chapter explains the Sun position through sundials, and the different daylight elements. The fourth and the fifth chapters deal with Artificial Lighting and strategies to reduce the electric load through the different lamps, and light control systems.

ABSTRACT

This article explores materials through the design and construction of a pavilion for children that was constructed by undergraduate students who use prototypes of analysis in order to understand and visualize the options available for a material like that of bamboo.

ABSTRACT

A city as a system must attain a cultural structure where the daily productive actions are in harmony with the natural resources. This paper narrates the experience of the city of Kalundborg in Denmark, a paradigm of cooperation between industry and community to achieve a sustainable development.

ABSTRACT

To understand and to think about the role of natural light in Architecture, it is necessary to study light as a natural phenomenon. This article presents a Case of Study of an interior space in an educative building. Light conditions inside the space are deficient and because of it, different alternatives to improve the light quality are proposed.

1/RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Papers in Refereed Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

This paper is focused on how materials, modeled geometry and machinery can be related to study design and fabrication of spatial trusses. It is presented through an investigation carried by students of architecture as part of a class in materials. The objective of the class was to study a material in the context of Component Design; enhancing the principle of learning by modeling. .

ABSTRACT

Sustainability represents the challenge of the current century. Under this idea, cities are called to function in an more efficient way reducing their burden on the environment. The Industrial Ecology proposes the study of a city as a productive system where environmental, economic and technological aspects are interconnected..

ABSTRACT

This article presents the experience of design an structure with a recycled material such as cardboard. The study of the curvature of a dome, the fabrication of the structural elements, and the assemblage of a kit of parts permit to learn about the steps of a construction process.

Studies in Materials and Assemblies

The purpose of study materials and assemblies is focused on a continuous development of building products and systems.

In an early stage of design, students work on physical based processes to gain knowledge making a mock-up.

They learn about materiality, scale and geometry. Afterwards, they work with digital tools aiming to design a structural node in detail. Finally, students explore form generation and digital fabrication.

PREFABRICATION OF A CONCRETE MODULE

MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2009-1This exercise is a material exploration in concrete. The design and construction of a concrete prefabricated permit students to identify material specifications, limitations, and alternatives. The design and development of the formwork in plastics, the material composition, and the construction are stages experienced by the students.

WINDOW PANEL IN NATURAL MATERIALS: WOOD, BAMBOO AND ADOBE

MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2009-2This exercise is a material exploration in the configuration of a window frame. Different types of windows are constructed by the students. Wood is used for the frame, adobe is used as a covering material and a bamboo fabric is used to cover the window pane.

JOINERY IN WOOD PLANAR TRUSSES

MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2010-1This exercise is a material exploration in the configuration of planar trusses. The students build a wood prototype of a truss module. In this, they explore sections and assemblies. Then, digital modeling permits to analyze the association of elements in a structural system.

JOINERY IN PAPER TUBES / SPATIAL TRUSSES

MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2010-2This exercise is a material exploration in the configuration of spatial trusses. The students build a cardboard prototype of a truss module. In this, they explore diameters, sections and assemblies. Then, digital modeling permits to analyze the association of elements in a structural system.

JOINERY IN MDFMATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2011-1This exercise is a geometrical exploration in the configuration of nodes. Either by interlocking layers (i.e. tetrahedron, octahedron, or dodecahedron) or creating solids(i.e. tetrahedron, octahedron, or dodecahedron), the students design, and analyze the performance of a structural node.

JOINERY IN PVC AND MDF / DOME STRUCTUREMATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE CLASSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2012-1This exercise is a geometrical exploration in the configuration of dome structure. The students build a prototype in plastic and MDF structure. In this, they explore diameters, sections and assemblies. Then, digital modeling permits to analyze the association of elements in a double curve structural system.

2/CONDUCTED WORK

STUDENT´S PAVILIONSThe symbiosis of designing and building can generate inventions and these can become real innovations.

This exercise is the integration of designing and engineering, production and realization.

Choosing the material for a building is paramount in the design process as it determines the success of the construction of a student´s pavilion.

Students must be aware of the processes of extraction, transformation, assembly, and function of the materials in order to be able to involve them in their earliest plans.

STUDENT´S PAVILION / CARDBOARD

STUDIO IN MATERIALSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2009-2This pavilion employs cardboard as structural material and plastic flexible sheets as roofing material. The structure of the pavilion is thought as a vault composed by elements in two directions.

STUDENT´S PAVILION / BAMBOO

STUDIO IN MATERIALSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2010-2This pavilion is constructed in bamboo, a material with an important development in the vernacular architecture in rural areas of Colombia. The structure is thought as a cage of bamboo trunks .

STUDENT´S PAVILION / RECYCLED PLASTIC BOXES

STUDIO IN MATERIALSUNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES

2011-1In this pavilion, the reutilization of plastic boxes becomes the parameter to design a playground. The use of composite for the lateral structure permits to stabilize the structure of the grouped plastic boxes
