Design

The urban scale project of redevelopment of the former premises of the fair center of Saint Petersburg and former yacht club. The task was to design mixed-used city fabric, to emphasize and to integrate dramatic harbor landscape in the island grid, to derive multi scenarios environment with access to water (which is missing mostly in the city center) and integrate existing green network of adjacent park and greenery on the site.

To solve the dilemma what it should be, careful urban and architectural analysis was undertaken to derive better planning solutions.

The design area is adjacent to existing (in the south-east) and converting industrial zones (in the north-west).

Sea facade of the island. Dramatic landscapes and harbors and channel network.

Solution: to design modern multi f u n c t i o n a l c i t y e n v i r o n m e n t accommodating variety of functions (dwelling, commercial, office, handicraft and creative cluster), mix of articial and nature with well articulated hierarchy of public and private spaces.

The new district could have a symbolic meaning as a west facade of the island (opposite to the Strelka) beaded on the axes of Bolshoy and Maliy Prospects.

Grid network of adjacent blocks is better permeable than the one of the 18 century. It will be considered as an objective. Access on the territory and to the waterfront has to provide a multiple choice of the routes.

New perspective corridor to the Church of Our Lady the Merciful was taken as a main planning element of the master plan.

This corridor is a symbolic baroque technic which is very typical in urban structure of the city of Saint Petersburg. It was considered to preserve and implement traditional nuances of the city planning in the project.

The perspective direction is reproduced in layout of multi functional center in the north-west part of the territory.

Discovered routes will be kept in the proposed master plan. Yellow areas are the zones of a special status or under preservation. Existing greenery will be saved as much is possible and integrated in the fabric

4 14

The problem of the Vasiljevsky island is the broken connection of Bolshoy prospect to the Strelka (the spit). By space syntax analysis the Strelka is relatively isolated from the rest of the island.

It is very important to avoid the same mistake and design permeable and interconnected with adjacent territories district.

It is alse very important to facilitate adverse climate conditions of the city and its close vicinity to the open water of the bay. Shifted grid of the master plan could allow to break the speed and to reduce inuence of strong cold south-west winds.

According to the development plan of subway two subway exits will be built at the Skipper bridge and at the corner of Skipper Canal street and Nalichnaya.

The “spirit of the place” and a walking scenario of fair center could be preserved and restored in the new city district.

Different street activities of the adjacent neighborhoods have been analyzed.

Functional diversity of the designed area will dene such functions besides dwelling as creative cluster, premises for small scale production, commerce and offices. Trade center integrated with west subway exit will replace chain stores accommodated in former exhibition halls which are to be removed.

Preparation for the competition Elbbrücke Quartier

This study was a preparation for the city competition on the master plan of the Elbbrücke Quartier. Results of the analysis were considered in the work on competition objectives.

According to present Building code of the city of Hamburg the only requirement is to keep are gaps between buildings equal to 0.4H. In the case of HafenCity development project it is allowed to build even denser as in zone of special regulation. The main policy for new districts is to provide 30% amount of the dwellings as a social housing. In this situation apartments with better characteristics (views, orientation, cross-ventilation, better light exposure) could be on the free market when those with worse - socially supported. Light exposure and shading parameters of existing master plan were thoroughly analyzed according to Russian insolation regulations. The model of solar envelope was built to show how existing master plan should be changed to meet the regulations and were design solutions were not optimal.

Some recommendations on design were discussed in a number of meetings with Planning Department and representatives of HafenCity development corporation.

Preparation for the competition Dokumentationszentrum am Lohsepark

Three design proposals of the building were designed for the competition commission. Planning schemes allowed to estimate architectural parameters of the building and different arrangement of the premises.

On the rst oor located an archive dedicated to the ethnic victims of WW II. The archive is a part of a memorial complex in the Lohsepark. On the upper oors are offices with the independent entrance. In the basement are parking places divided between the archive and office residents.

Building design is in line with current Building regulations of the city of Hamburg and the BRD.

T h e s c h e m e s w e r e t a k e n i n t o consideration for the preparation of documentation and objectives for the city competition on development of this plot.

Unusual for traditional russian ap-proach in new development was ap-plied. Two basiс layout typologies were used. Housing blocks with articu-lated street front and dened pri-vate, n o - c a r s p a ce i n ya rd s. Detached houses grouped by 2 or 4 on common plots providing also no-car areas between them.

Both typologies are apartment buildings. Housing blocks include studios, 1, 2-room apartments. Detached houses have bigger apart-ments (2, 3-room) and offer du-plexes on top oors.

Master plan of dwelling was a part of a large-scale reclamation project including warehouses, petroleum storage depot, motor-transport depot and infrastructure objects in regional city in the south part of Russia.

Development area adjoins existing city structure from the south-west. Residential district integrated with city fabric and continues. It was very important to design coherent and permeable structure.

In this project we approbated model of traditional city structure with blocks and courtyards instead of microrayon. All design is in line with current Russian building regulations. Fire regulations, SNIP «Roads» were taken into account at rst and let us to have several square blocks with access entrances from the streets. In order to be in line with insolation norms meridional and longitudinal section types were applied in the project as a typical element of quarter-shaped houses.

It Is worth to mention that this project was a part of state contract where traditional microraion scheme could be the most likely implemented.Me and my team give us a task to use traditional construction schemes, section design and open space elements but rearrange them in new composition. Our goal was to design closed courtyard housing blocks with distinct determination of public and private spaces.

The task was to design a complex of buildings consisted of administration and production buildings for the big Russian manufacturing corporation, located on its premises in the central part of Russia. These images are representing presentation material for closed contest held by the client in the beginning of 2013. After winning and s igning a contrac t with the studio requirments specication was changed a couple of times including construction budget therefore the building was transformed to the more conventional look.

The administration building includes a canteen, museum of company on the ground oor and a number of office rooms and open spaces on the overlying oors. At the entrance there is small plaza partially covered by cantilevered glass canopy.

Administration and Production Complex

The hall is located between building wall and a glass curtain-wall of museum giving a visitor inspirational scenario being in 2-storey height hall with transparent glass roof and adjacent museum with some vintage exhibit.

Administration building exterior is quite traditional for modern office building, with slightly ledging oors at above.

Production building proposal was designed with a personal close cooperation with a process engineer. Floor layouts were m a d e t o m e e t r e q u i e r m e n t s o f technological processes of the industry.

The rst part of the complex which was put in working drawings production of stage “P”.

Production building was designed in closed cooperation with process engineer supervised by me from the architectural department.

This building has complicated process scheme and it took from our team ample efforts to put all layouts in line with all technological and process standards .

Although the building belongs to military industr y and is not under civi l buildings regulations, it meets re regulations as is.

Assembly shop was additionally calculated to measure explode risks because of category “B” of re risks.

On demand of contractor colours of mounted facade tiles match standarts of corporation brand book.

Livable city concept keysThe concept framework of livable cities

explains key principles of our design practice, which are the basic principles of sustainable design and a compilation of architectural sociology.

The idea that city is an organic integral system, livable organism in a whole inhabited with people. All design decisions should be aimed to construct spaces for people

City is a system of sensible spaces.Urban space is a framework of inhabited

places with names. The name is a description of the place for

people

City is a social space rst of all. City is a live organismic system. The essential characteristic of an

organism is a metabolism, thus the main attribute of the city is contact and communication.
