Bicentenary Square Urban Renewal

At the center of Monterrey, NL, Mexico is the Macroplaza, the world’s largest linear Square. In the northeast corner is a space sub-used as public parking.

This land has the ability to become a stage to celebrate the collective memory of the Nuevo Leon people, linking traditional and modern regional identity. Thus, techniques and materials from the vernacular architecture

The square acts as a center for exhibitions and trade fairs as well as serving as a venue for events, this place has a connection with a lot of underground spaces, which ideally would house the old informal businesses. Thus “commercial invasion” of temporary structures

near the bridge between the museum and the square of heroes is avoided. This square is given its own space so they can pursue their activity in a dignified way: each trader will (ideally) assigned place and be protected from inclement weather.

Our solution was a trailer that has both a temporal classroom and housing for the teacher who will focus courses. Design has a portable mode to facilitate fransfers and a semi-fixed mode which increases by 30% both classroom and housing areas.

TEMPORARY HOUSING

CLASSROOM A fast & flexible response for the increasing educational needs of rural areas in Mexico within a tight timeline and budget.

The minimal site preparation and flexible design allows to reach and even move later the classroom at will.

If given self-construction courses at the School trailer, so the community could build knowingly (and properly) the spaces needed to continue giving courses when the trailer moves to other community.

To foster self-sufficient, sustainable communities, CEMEX created Productive Centers of Self-Employment (PCS or CPA by its Spanish name initials). These spaces allow participants to produce concrete blocks and other precast products, half of which they can use to build, repair or expand their homes. Municipal or state governments purchase the other half for infrastructure development. The resulting proceeds are reinvested in the centers to make them self-sustaining.

With a combined total of 104 centers across Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica, during 2014 more than 5,300 families benefited from CEMEX PCSs.
