This group look after the Tootgarook Wetlands, recognising that it as a fine natural asset for the Mornington Peninsula.

Cameron Brown and Jessica Durrant have been interested in this area for over six years.

The group - Friends of Tootgarook Wetland Reserves – all volunteers, have been working on several fronts to keep it and restore it as much as possible for our future.

Cameron talks of the beauty of the wetlands, of the huge variety of bird-life and other animals that are depend-ent on the wetlands.

He has seen wallabies grazing, echidnas, herds of black swans, beautiful tree ferns – all within a short distance of our backdoor.

One practical job they are concen-trating on this year to restore the wetland is to remove noxious weeds such as the large shrubs of Italian Buckthorn and African Boxthorn.

These two are difficult to deal with as they have large thorns, so the clever methods used are to leave the shrub in situ, tunnel under and poison the base, then native climbers will

take over the plant. This will allow the native species to revive and come back naturally.

Regular working bees are held under the auspice of Mornington Peninsula Shire Council who provide expertise and equipment.

Working bees are held on the first

Saturday of the month – 10am to 1pm at Sanctuary Park Reserve, at the end of Elizabeth Drive, Capel Sound.

The group’s Facebook page has lots of information and many photographs of the amazing flora and fauna that call this little pocket of the Peninsula home.

Profile: Southern Peninsula Indigenous Flora &

Fauna Association (SPIFFA)

SPIFFA plays a prominent role in local environmental advocacy and natural systems education on the Morn-ington Peninsula. It has been around for 27 years, is an incorporated body with a dedicated band of volunteers.

SPIFFA has meetings open to all-comers on the first Monday of the month (except November and January) at Seawinds Community Hub in Capel Sound. Meetings begin with a speaker presentation, followed by supper with cake and then the meetings, which are high on information and low on admin-istration.

The next meeting is on 7th August and features 3 short films that have been made about the Tootgarook/Boneo Swamp, one by independent filmmaker Anthony Kelly and two pro-duced by Birdlife Australia.

The SPIFFA website spiffa.org averages over 200 visitors per day and is a comprehensive, ecological, cultural heritage, ecological restoration and bushland management resource.

The Association is again running the 4 month-long Peninsula Habitat Man-

agement Course, starting in August. More details on future courses can be found on their website. http://www.spiffa.org/habitat-management-course.html

SPIFFA participates in Schools Environment Week at The Briars in Mt Martha. Another annual event is the Boneseed weeding day in the Arthurs Seat State Park with various other groups.

The September meeting will feature Peninsula Landcare Coordinator Jacqui Salter talking about the remarkable progress in linking up habitat on pri-vate land with reserves at Arthurs Seat and Greens Bush on the southern pen-insula.

Profile : Helen & Ken Macpherson

The past week had a day called “Do Something! Day” to encourage people to volunteer.

Well, this couple certainly embody the spirit of “Doing Something!” as they have been volunteering in many places around the Rosebud area ever since they retired 14 years ago.

Helen and volunteers run the popular Community Lunch held every Wednes-day during term time at Seawinds Community Hub. The volunteer team uses food obtained through Sec-ond Bite, and produces a very delicious and tasty two course lunch for only $5.

Helen spends a lot of time travelling around collecting fresh produce and bargains to keep down the cost.

The lunch regularly caters for about 40 people — many of whom come for the social time as much as a delicious lunch, and the lively chat around the table attests.

This week "Christmas in July" is on Wednesday 26th July (already booked

out) by the team of volun-teers who love contrib-uting to the community spirit at Seawinds.

Ken also volunteers at the Hub as the indispensible maintenance man — there’s always something that needs fixing or replacing. Ken also enjoys taking toys that have been much loved in the Kindergarten and Child Care to his home workshop for repairs.

They have been a part of the Hub since it opened about five years ago.

CEO Heather Barton is full of praise for Helen and Ken, saying “The Hub simp-ly couldn't do without such valuable people. Simply, the Hub could not operate with-out the team of good hearted volunteers, and Helen and Ken do a mighty job!”

They don't limit their activities to the Hub, they both volunteered for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, Ken works for charity Golf Days, and Helen is involved in crafts for charity, also at the

Hub. Both volunteered at Eastbourne Primary School, Ken working in the garden, Helen in the kitchen.

Both said they love the special relationships built up with other volunteers — the camaraderie with people from all walks of life, and they have a lot of fun!

They keep busy with more volunteering at Second Bite and Baby Bundles for new mothers, charity markets, driving elderly to appoint-ments. When they can, they visit their three children and six grandchildren.

Travel is also an interest, they take off overseas every

second year, so far having visited Europe, parts of Asia and the Americas.

Helen, a retired school teacher, and Ken had worked in banking and administration, enjoy their life here, love the relaxed lifestyle and having all amenities close by.

We are certainly lucky to have people such as Ken and Helen living here who appreciate this special part of the world and give back to our community.

The Community Connectors project - a new way to

‘get connected’ Community Connectors are volunteers who can help

members of our community become connected with other people, groups, clubs and organisations within their local area.

Being connected to the community can improve well-being and make people feel good about the community they live in. Starting a new activity can be daunting;

- Finding out about what’s happening in their area can be difficult.

- Going to a new group on your own can be intimidating.

- Sometimes getting motivated to go to something new can be a challenge; sometimes we just need some en-couragement to give it a go!

A number of volunteers from Seawinds have recently completed training as Community Connectors and are already ‘up and at it’, talking to people, offering a hand and providing information and support.

“Community Connectors” forms part of the “Strengthening Seniors’ Inclusion and Participation in Local Communities (SSIP)” State Government funded project. It is being led by Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston City Council in partnership with a number of locally based organisations.

For more information about the project, call Michelle on 5950 1774, or email on [email protected]

Local community determined to

protect the Peninsula

Around 150 people attended the first in a series of town meetings re-garding recently introduced state gov-ernment planning changes that could allow three storey buildings up to 11 metres to be constructed in some resi-dential areas across the Peninsula.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said the event demonstrated the passion and concern many local residents feel about how these changes could sig-nificantly impact on the peninsula's look and feel.

“The community were happy with

Council’s approach to the new chang-es and all agreed three storey devel-opments are not reflective of the character of our residential areas.

“There was an overall agreement that people power is necessary to get the message across to the Minister that the peninsula is not like metro-politan Melbourne and a one size fits all approach will not work for the peninsula.

"Our townships mean so much to our local residents and it's our job to protect our residential areas from in-appropriate development that is in-

consistent with the low scale charac-ter of our Shire," concluded Councillor Colomb.

Areas affected most by the planning changes include:

Rosebud

Dromana

Capel Sound

Bittern

Hastings

Tyabb

Somerville

Baxter

Mornington East

If you missed out on this great opportunity to learn more

about how you can help to protect the much-loved character of our townships from these planning changes, you can still attend a session at Mornington on Wednesday 26 July or in Tyabb on Wednesday 2 August.

Submit your favourite recipes to share with everyone! A photo would be great too! Recipe of the Week

Pesto gnocchi and chicken bake

Ingredients 500g packet gnocchi

250g punnet cherry tomatoes, halved

2 medium zucchini, chopped

1/2 ½ BBQ chicken, skin removed, meat shredded

4 cups baby spinach

1/4 cup basil pesto

2 tablespoons grated parmesan

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 210°C. Spray a large roasting pan (25cm

x 30cm) with olive oil.

2. Boil

gnocchi for 2 minutes, according to packet instructions.

Drain, reserving some cooking water to thin out the

pesto.

3. Toss tomatoes and zucchini in prepared pan. Spray with

oil. Season with pepper. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until

softened. Thin out the pesto with the cooking water, and

add to pan with the gnocchi; toss gently.

4. Add chicken and spinach; stir. Sprinkle with parmesan

and spray with oil. Bake for a further 10-15 minutes or

until golden.

Knowing the right thing to say isn’t always easy. It could be a miscarriage; death of a loved one or someone facing a crisis-physical or emotional, real or imagined.

We are emotional beings and we all experience anxiety and fear at times. Approximately 25 per cent of the Australian population have an anxiety disorder that warrants treatment at some time in their life and up to another 25 per cent have less severe

anxieties.

So you want to be a supportive friend?

Don’t say “Calm Down”; “It’s really not a big deal” or “Everything will be fine”.

When our emotions are dominating we feel out of control, so these statements aren’t helpful. “I know how you feel” can be insulting. “I know you can’t control it” is a much better statement.

“Have a drink; you’ll feel better” is not a good coping strategy!

“Oh, Here We Go Again!” implies that the anxiety is not a serious condition, although sometimes humour can work well to defuse the situation.

As a Mum, I have used this one; “Why Won’t You Tell Me What’s Wrong?” more than once.

The reality is it can be hard to communicate our feelings and it might be embarrassing, especially to tell your mother!!

Instead create a space where it is OK to open up & reassure. “I love you, no matter what” is what we all want to hear

Opt for a positive, non judgemental approach, which sometimes is saying nothing and just being there. “Are You OK?” can be a good start.

“I’m always here if you need to talk”, ‘tell me about it’; as well as “Your Fears/Worries/Triggers are not silly”

A simple cuppa of tea works wonders and offer; “How can I help” or “Let’s sort through this together”.

Our emotional black hole can seem insurmountable, so reminding someone that

this feeling will pass can be a beacon of hope. “I am here; you are safe.”
