Impact of Population Number in Indonesia and Japan

Citizen is one of four terms in order to build a country. Nowadays, there are more than

7.3 billion of people that are scattered in every country in the world. The world population is

growing by 1.2 percent per year, or approximately an additional 83 million people annually.

Even with the high death rates of those living in poverty, the world population is still expanding

at an incredible rate. It is expected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 11.2

billion in 2100. However, more than 70 percent of them live in developing countries, so it will

create the positive and negative impacts significantly for a country. As a government, they have

to think about population control and its impact for the future. For example is the problems and

conditions in Indonesia as one of developing countries, and Japan as developed countries.

Population control affects the consumption level, economic development and land use both in

Indonesia and Japan.

The population number could affect the consumption level both in Indonesia and Japan.

As a human, we will use the products that are needed for daily life (primary), secondary and

tertiary. If the citizens use the product or consume something, it will produce the amount of

waste significantly. Based on Ministry of Environment statistics in 2014, Indonesia produces

more than 180.000 ton waste per day or equal with 64 million ton per year. It causes the dump

and garbage, mostly in Java, can’t load more amount of waste and will make people throw the

waste into river or anywhere else. Waste is one of the hardest problems that related to disaster

like flood and reduces the aesthetics value. On the other hand, Japan produced only 9.7 million

ton waste per year, so the Japanese government can implement the 3R and waste separation

easily that can make the cities in Japan more beautiful than before. Therefore, the number of

population is really important to reduce the amount of waste and make the country better.

Economic development between Indonesia and Japan are affected by population number.

As we know, the population in Indonesia is not equal with the jobs availability. Based on

statistics on World Bank, the population in Indonesia reaches 250 million of people and 6% of

them are jobless that cause the GDP just US$888 billion per year. The Government has to focus

on subsidize poor people in some aspects such as Indonesian Smart Card, Indonesian Health

Card, Direct Cash Assistance, and also the fuel price for reducing the poverty level to stabilize

economical country. On the other hand, population in Japan just has 127 million of people with

only 4% of them are jobless. It causes the economic development in Japan has already enough

with GDP US$4,600 billion per year and makes the government allocate the budget to develop

technology such as Shinkansen and Maglev as the fastest train in the world or build more

infrastructures like 1,152,207 kilometers of highways and 6,114 kilometers of expressways.

Thus, the population control really influence the country in order to reduce the amount of

subsidize and develop the economy.

Population also influences the number of residence that affects land use in Indonesia and

Japan. As the example, Java and Honshu are the islands with the capital city of each country, but

the conditions are too different in some aspects especially in land use. Based on statistics, the

density in Java is about 1026 per km square which dominantly live in Jakarta. It causes the

increasing of residences, so the public areas for reforestation not available. Therefore, it causes

new problems such as uncontrolled air pollution, low infiltration level, inhabitant wild animals,

etc. On the other hand, the density in Honshu just about 447 per km square and the residence’s

development is done vertically. Then, government can set the master plan easier for country and

provide some public spaces for green areas too. Consequently, number of population really

influenced the government to set up the master plan of land use.

The consumption level, economic development and land use in Indonesia and Japan are

affected by population control. The zero population growth in Japan really affects the

Government in Japan to set plans easier than in other country with high population growth. If

Indonesia can control the population like Japan, Indonesia could be developed country. The

Indonesian government has to press the population growth immediately. Therefore, the number

of population really affects a country in order to have the good impacts.
