Introduction A dedicated psychiatrist, Dr. Elliot Gruen works in part-time private

practice in Maine and provides general psychiatric care to patients in the outpatient department at St. Mary’s Hospital’s off-campus clinic. When not caring for patients, Dr. Elliot Gruen is an avid fisherman. He has been fishing for two decades and enjoys both salt and freshwater fishing.

Maine features a plethora of salt and freshwater fishing opportunities for all types of anglers. Following are just a few of the state’s top freshwater fishing spots to help you plan your next Maine fishing trip:

- Moosehead Lake: one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the US, Moosehead Lake covers 75,000 acres of land and features several different access points. It is connected to three different rivers and is great for brook trout and wild salmon.

Freshwater Fishing - Mousam Lake: a relatively narrow lake, Mousam Lake is popular

among families. It stays well stocked with lake, brown, and brook trout and feature several inlets and coves that are perfect for canoe fishing.

- Kennebago River: home to a salmon and brook trout fishery, the Kennebago River features consistent fishing throughout the day during peak fishing seasons. The best fishing spots and times change depending on the year’s weather, but typically July and August are best.

- Penobscot River: the Penobscot River provides top salmon fishing in late spring and early fall. It is one of the state’s top landlocked salmon fisheries and the west branch, specifically, offers good fishing opportunities without the large crowds often found along the main river.
