The Life Of

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA

CATHERINE’S WISDOM

“The soul that sees its own nothingness and knows that its whole good is to be found in the Creator forsakes itself and all its powers and all other creatures and immerses itself wholly in Him, directing all its operations to-wards Him and never alienating itself from Him, for it realizes that in Him it can find all goodness and perfect happiness. Through this vision of love, increasing from day to day, the soul is so transformed into God that it cannot think or understand or love or remember any-thing but God and the things of God. Itself and other crea-tures it sees only in God, itself and others it remembers only in God. Thus it is like a man who dives into the sea and swims under water: all he can see and touch is water and the things in the water, while, as for anything outside the water, he can neither see it nor touch it nor feel it. If the things outside the water are reflected in it, then he can see them, but only ijn the water as they look in the water, and not in any other way. This is the true and proper way of delighting in oneself and all other crea-tures, and it can never lead to error, because, being nec-essarily always governed by God’s ordinanace, it cannot lead to any desire for anything outside of God, because all the activity takes place within God and remains within Him.” (68)

FEET ON THE GROUND “Until next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!” Not today’s scriptural wisdom, but legendary DJ Casey Kasem’s sage advice, heard across Amer-ica for generations, American Top 40’s challenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn’t quoting scripture, today’s Acts of the Apostles offers similar advice. As Jesus ascended, disciples “were looking intently at the sky.” Wouldn’t we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heart-breaking fo-cus on this blood-stained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus’ first disciples, “Why are you standing there look-ing at the sky?” Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should “keep reaching for” heaven, we need to “keep our feet on the ground.” Ascension’s scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as “ascended into heaven” lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our rec-ognition and loving service.

DidYouKnow? What constitutes a concern worth reporting? Parents have a responsibility to report concerns they have about another person’s behaviors or actions that could put their children — or any children — at risk. These concerns are anything that makes the parent uneasy or uncomfortable, or anything that a child reports made them feel uneasy or uncomfortable. Some examples of seemingly little things that can be worth reporting include: A teacher covering her glass classroom door with artwork, eliminating the ability to see into the classroom from the hall; a youth ministry icebreaker activity, where teens have to pass a mint candy from person to per-son using only toothpicks in their mouth, despite the discomfort of some participants.

This Sunday, June 2, Our Knights of Columbus Council is continuing the food drive by collecting ready-to-eat items in easy-to-open cans or packages. You are encouraged to bring nutri-tious food that you personally enjoy. We need canned soups, canned meats, fresh meats,

cheese, eggs, cold cuts, pre-cooked meats; please, noth-ing packed in glass. We don’t need the following canned items: beans, potatoes, green beans, sweet corn, mixed vegetables, carrots and cranberry sauce as we have a lot of these already.

For those in need, St. Catherine’s has a pantry with a variety of food items available during the week on Tues-days (1 to 3PM), Wednesdays and Fridays (10AM to 3PM). Families and the homeless are welcome to supple-ment their food needs from our pantry.
