The Life Of

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA

CATHERINE’S DIVINE MISSION

“Do you not remember that the zeal for souls which I planted and watered in your soul in the days of your infancy grew to such an extent that you planned to disguise yourself as a man and enter the Order of Preachers and go off into foreign parts, and so be more useful to yourself and other souls?...What is there to be astonished at or to lament about if I lead you to do what in in-fancy you desired to do?” And Catherine, some-what comforted by this reply, would say, as once Blessed Mary had said, “How shall this thing be?” And the Lord: “According as my goodness shall ordain.” And Catherine, like a good disciple imitating her Master, would answer: “Let your will, not mine, be done in all things, Lord, for I am darkness and you are light; I am not, whereas you are He who is; I most ignorant, and you the wisdom of God the Father. But I beg you, O Lord...how can I, wretched and frail as I am, be of use to souls?...To these words the Lord would reply, as once Archangel Gabriel had replied, that nothing is impossible to God, for He said: “Am not I He who created the human race, and divided it into male and female? I spread abroad the grace of my spirit where I will. In my eyes there is neither male nor female, rich nor poor, but all are equal, for I can do all things with equal ease. (90)

ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of good-ness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Gene-sis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotia-tor, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversa-tions with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SUNDAY’S READINGS First Reading — Abraham bargains with God to spare the city (Genesis 18:20-32). Psalm — Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me (Psalm 138). Second Reading — You were buried with Christ in baptism, in which you were also raised with Christ (Colossians 2:12-14). Gospel — Everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds (Luke 11:1-13). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ex 32:15-24, 30-34; Ps 106:19-23 or Ps 34:2-11; Jn 11:19-27 or Lk 10:38-42 Tuesday: Ex 33:7-11; 34:5b-9, 28; Ps 103:6-11; Mt 13:36-43 Wednesday: Ex 34:29-35; Ps 99:5-7, 9; Mt 13:44-46 Thursday: Ex 40:16-21, 34-38; Ps 84:3-6a, 8, 11; Mt 13:47-53 Fri-day: Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Ps 81:3-6, 10-11ab; Mt 13:54-58 Saturday: Lv 25:1, 8-17; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 7-8; Mt 14:1-12 Sunday: Eccl 1:2; 2:21-23; Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17; Col 3:1-5, 9-11; Lk 12:13-21

LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES Domingo: Decimosépti-mo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Lunes: Santa Marta Martes: San Pedro Crisólogo Miércoles: San Ignacio de Loyola Jueves: San Alfonso de Ligorio Viernes: San Eusebio de Vercelli; San Pedro Juliano Eymard; Primer viernes Sábado: Santa María Virgen; Pri-mer sábado

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Ex 32:15-24, 30-34; Sal 106 (105):19-23 o Sal 34:2-11; Jn 11:19-27 o Lc 10:38-42 Martes: Ex 33:7-11; 34:5b-9, 28; Sal 103 (102):6-11; Mt 13:36-43 Miércoles: Ex 34:29-35; Sal 99 (98):5-7, 9; Mt 13:44-46 Jueves: Ex 40:16-21, 34-38; Sal 84 (83):3-6a, 8, 11; Mt 13:47-53 Viernes: Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Sal 81 (80):3-6, 10-11ab; Mt 13:54-58 Sábado: Lv 25:1, 8-17; Sal 67 (66):2-3, 5, 7-8; Mt 14:1-12 Domingo: Ecl 1:2; 2:21-23; Sal 90 (89):3-6, 12-14, 17; Col 3:1-5, 9-11; Lc 12:13-21

DidYouKnow? Trained adults can take steps to prevent suspicion. The Protecting God’s Children pro-gram is in place to raise awareness about behaviors of adults that may indicate a threat to the safety of children and young people. Through this program, trained adults learn how to prevent abuse from happening, in part by taking steps to eliminate suspicious behaviors, such as being alone with a young person. Creating a culture of openness and transparency goes a long way towards alleviating concerns of inappropriate behavior by adults, and helps children feel safe in their environment.
