Introduction Invigorate your teaching practice or literature programming by

exploring imaginative approaches to engaging young readers and

writers through visual storytelling.

Pop Up Lab is cross-sector space in which to explore and experiment, share

practice and learn new things. 300 attendees will be able to choose up to

6 sessions per day from a packed programme of 30 hands-on workshops,

demonstrations & conversations with 28 organisations and individuals. Many

sessions are artist-led. Attendees can explore several strands running through the

visual storytelling theme - including ‘digital resources and practice’, ‘language and

translation’ and a strong international presence - but you do not need to be experts

or practitioners in those fields.

Transbook is a European initiative to promote the digital transition and

internationalisation of the children’s publishing industry. Transbook is co-financed

by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and operated by seven

European partners from the children’s publishing industry.

THE BRIGHT GROUP present

Modern Story Making: Incorporating Illustration with Digital MediumsThis talk and workshop explores the processes of putting pen and paints to paper and evolving the illustration for a story through digital mediums.

Mark Chambers discussing how we can best communicate a story’s humour, moral or message, to capture its young audience’s hearts. Mark has illustrated a wealth of picture books and young fiction. In 2013 he won the Sheffield Children’s Picture Book Prize for ‘Pigeon Poo’ (Little Tiger Press) and was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize with ‘Noisy Bottoms’ (Usborne).

Represented by illustration agency The Bright Group, he is joined by Managing Agent Arabella Stein to comment on the picture book market, its changing trends and audience needs.

ART BASICS FOR CHILDREN (BELGIUM) present ABC Studio: A Mobile Resource for Visual Literacy & Creative StorytellingABC present samples from their travelling collection of books and visual materials for use in language games, and the making, writing and telling of stories through book- and print-making, paper craft and graphic design.

Gerhard Jäger worked for 15 years in the Serapionstheater in Vienna. After initiating various culture projects in the south of Austria he founded ABC in Brussels in 1995.

Patrick Jordens trained as a primary teacher and in theatre sciences. He now works in the socio-cultural and art education field - and is a critic of children’s and YA literature.

ABC is an experimental laboratory for art and education projects and develops innovative tools for libraries, schools, cultural centres, prisons and refugee camps. It has a children’s library of over 12,000 titles, 2,650 of which have been digitised.

Before, before, before… Tribal StoriesExplore how traditional tales can inspire reading and literacy development, combining case studies from Papua New Guinea, Finland and Romania with practical activities to develop storytelling skills.

Lisa Vernon has a background in archaeology, anthropology and literacy education. She spent three years working in the settlements and villages of Papua New Guinea and 15 years teaching people to read. She currently works at Historic Royal Palaces in the Learning and Engagement Team.

Cloudberry Consulting is a social enterprise that specialises in sharing education initiatives from one country to another, with consultants and trainers who have led projects internationally, particularly designing and delivering innovative and engaging training programmes around Active Citizenship, Education and Learning, Leadership and Creativity.

CENTRE FOR LITERACY IN PRIMARY EDUCATION present The Power of PicturesThis session demonstrates the vital role that picturebooks play across the primary school age range in developing children’s understanding of creative processes - especially the important role that drawing plays in the writing process, and how to deepen reading comprehension using illustrations.

Charlotte Hacking is an expert teacher working at CLPE. She developed the Power of Pictures project, investigating how to read and explore picture books and the impact illustration has on children’s writing.

The CLPE is an independent UK charity with a global reputation for the quality of research into literacy and teaching, promoting high standards in the teaching of literacy and emphasizing the importance of books in enabling children to become confident and enthusiastic readers.

EXPLORING SENSES present

Land of Make Believe Participants are encouraged to play and learn through activities combining arts, crafts and technology. Starting with Toy Hacking, which reuses toys destined for landfill to make new hybrid creations; hand-made objects which are embedded with identity and visual culture, and which inspire new ideas and narratives for storytelling.

David Allistone & Hannah Coxeter run Exploring Senses CIC, a not-for-profit community arts organisation based in Brighton, combining arts, crafts and digital technologies to create participatory activities, workshops, exhibitions and events.

EMMA PRESS present Getting the Poem AcrossPoet and translator Richard O’Brien uses samples from a Latvian children’s book to demonstrate the joy and complexity of translation - working with a literal ‘bridge’ translation to share different strategies for preserving sound, shape and feeling from the original text.

HAMELIN (ITALY) present

Cinnostar: an Experiment in App Creation with Children This event explores an app-creation project with children in Bologna as part of Transbook - alongside a debate on the methodologies and processes employed by the artists with the children.

Ilaria Tontardini is a member of Hamelin Associazione Culturale which promotes children’s literature, illustration and comics through workshops with young people, training courses for teachers and organising exhibitions and conferences. Hamelin also hosts BilBOlBul, an international comic book festival, and takes part in Xanadu, a nation-wide literary project in Italy.

GOVERNMENT ART COLLECTION & POP UP present Visual Art as Story-Starters with Luke HealyAs a ‘taster’ for a new national visual literacy competition being developed by Pop Up and GAC for launch in 2018, comics artist Luke Healey - working from a small ‘journey’-themed curated collection of online artworks - models how individual contemporary and historical artworks can be used as springboards for developing sequential narratives.

Luke Healy is a cartoonist and illustrator from Dublin, Ireland. He studied comics at The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont, USA. His first book, How to Survive in the North, was published by Nobrow in 2016.

The Government Art Collection dates from 1888 and contains 13,500 works of art from the 16th century to now, mainly by British artists. Works are displayed in UK government buildings in nearly every capital city in the world. The role of the collection is to promote British art while contributing to cultural diplomacy.

JIM MEDWAY presents

Communicating with Comics Jim Medway shares how young people can gain confidence with English as a second language. Utilising emotional literacy in portraying characters and situations, and speech and thought bubbles to give a voice for things they might struggle to say out loud, this workshop shows how simplicity of design can enhance the clarity of communication.

Jim Medway is a published illustrator and cartoonist, known for the Phoenix Comic, Playing Out (shortlisted for the Young People’s British Comic Awards), and the recent Big Dogs, Little Dogs. Jim tailors Create Comics sessions for primaries, secondaries, SENCO and ESOL groups, youth, community and mental health groups in schools, colleges, galleries, museums and libraries across the UK. At VIA University in Viborg, Denmark he leads introductory sessions on their Graphic Storytelling course.

HOUSE OF ILLUSTRATION present Collage for Creative WritingPractical workshop exploring the art of collage to create unique and inspiring starting points for creative writing in poetry or prose.

Emily Jost is Head of Education at House of Illustration, where she runs a pioneering learning programme which champions the power of illustration as a learning tool for people of all ages.

House of Illustration are the UK’s only gallery dedicated to illustration in all its forms, with a creative programme of exhibitions, talks and events. Children Shaping Their Own Narratives A brief case study into ‘Cut, Copy, Paste’, a workshop programme which used mediums of illustration, collage and poetry to engage PRU students and support them to communicate and think about their own pasts and potential futures.

Karrie Fransman’s comics have been commissioned by The Guardian, The Times, New Statesman, BBC, Arts Council England, Southbank Centre and Manchester Art Gallery. Her graphic novels The House That Groaned and the award winning Death of the Artist were published by Penguin Random House.

Mellten: Comics in Minority and Second LanguagesArtist Huw Aaron will talk about creating and editing Mellten - the first Welsh language kids comic in decades - and the merits and challenges of comics as a medium for minority and second language readers.

Huw Edwards is a professional cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist who draws cartoons for Private Eye, Spectator, Prospect and others. He has run hundreds of school comic workshops, and enjoys the music of Enya.

Literature Wales is the national company for the development of literature in Wales. Their many projects and activities include: Wales Book of the Year, the National Poet of Wales, Bardd Plant Cymru and Young People’s Laureate Wales, creative writing courses at Ty Newydd Writing Centre, Roald Dahl 100 Wales, Services for Writers (including Bursaries and Mentoring) and Literary Tourism initiatives.

LISA TILESI presents Journeys Through SpaceThis session shares tools and techniques which can motivate students to write creatively in foreign languages, demonstrated through a case study project with year 8 students using comics and storytelling craft.

Lisa Tilesi has worked for the past 20 years as Head of Modern Foreign Languages in state schools, and as a teacher of French, Italian and German.

LITERATURE WALES present Storytelling Without WordsCartoonist and writer Siôn Tomos Owen addresses the practicalities of bilingual creative sessions and introduces tools for storytelling without using language, using comic panels to create stories without words via hieroglyphs, emojis and punctuation marks - creating a foundation on which to then introduce language and develop the comic.

Siôn Tomos Owen is a cartoonist and award-winning bilingual writer in Welsh and English. He worked as a tutor and key worker with young people in education before starting his own business, CreaSion, delivering creative workshops and event caricaturing.

MARJOLAINE LERAY & SARAH ARDIZZONE present

Translating PicturesLive drawing from the French illustrator of Little Red Hood and April the Red Goldfish while in conversation with her translator. Marjolaine and Sarah will explore visual literacy and ways in which images impact on words, as well as storyboarding and ideas from stop-animation in the classroom. An event to complement ‘Everyone’s A Translator’ (see below, p15).

Marjolaine Leray is a graphic designer and illustrator, living and working in Paris. A graduate of the Duperré School of Art, she has illustrated a wide range of books for children, as well as producing three dimensional multi-media work and animation.

Sarah Ardizzone is an award-winning translator from French of 40-something titles. These span picture books, children’s and YA, to graphic novels and literary fiction from Algeria, Congo Brazzaville and Burundi.

Gaëlle Maisonnier has worked as Artistic Programme Manager at the Montreuil Children’s Book Fair since 2013. She alo leads professional training sessions focusing on children and teenagers’ digital contents.

Montreuil Children’s Book Fair - with over 400 exhibitors, 161,000 visitors and 700 events – brings together a diverse range of children’s literature and formats. Their Children’s Book School programme offers courses in literary mediation for professionals working with children and develops new ways - digital and hands-on - of engaging with literature.

METAL & POP UP present

Skylights: A Collaborative ArtworkThroughout Friday 30th Metal and three artists participating in Pop Up’s International Illustrators programme from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - Lina Dudaite, Kertu Sillaste & Ieva Babilaite - will engage attendees in making artworks for an evolving ‘sky’ and ‘light’ themed installation in Peterborough Central Library.

Metal is an artistic laboratory that champions the need for continual investment in artistic investigation and the development of innovative ideas that could shift the thinking in the UK cultural sector. They provide innovative, multidisciplinary residency space for artists from the UK and overseas in Liverpool, Southend on Sea and Peterborough.

Pop Up’s International Illustrators programme sees 18 illustrators and comics artists working with talented young visual artists in 16 colleges and universities in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the UK to produce illustrated stories for professional publication. The resulting library of 160 original stories - published by Päike Ja Pilv (Estonia), kuš! (Latvia), Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania) and Nobrow (UK) - will be exhibited along with an events programme during London Book Fair 2018 to coincide with the Baltic States Market Focus.

Visualising Personal TestimonyThis talk and workshop explores the ethics and artistic processes of translating often distressing personal testimony into comics, illustration and animation.

Asia Alfasi is a renowned Libyan-British manga-influenced comic writer and artist who works with PositiveNegatives to convert first-person testimonies into ethnographic art about humanitarian and social issues.

Emma Savillle MSc is Education Programme Manager at PositiveNegatives, and has worked extensively in charitable, NGO and educational settings addressing women’s advocacy work, human trafficking and conflict.

PositiveNegatives are an award-winning not-for-profit organisation producing literary comics, animations and podcasts about contemporary social and human rights issues, including conflict, racism, migration and asylum.

From Paper to ScreenUsing a case study in which a popular non-fiction children’s book was developed into a digital app, this event explores the difficulties in adapting material from one medium to another, to stimulate debate around the pros and cons of both print and digital media in the classroom.

Sam Arthur is CEO and co-founder of Nobrow/Flying Eye Books, Director of the East London Comics & Arts Festival (ELCAF), and a board member of the Association of Illustrators. He has 20 years experience of working within the creative industries and has a passion for visual storytelling.

James Wilson is Creative Director and co-founder of Minilab Studios. One of their flagship titles, Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System won a Webby award and was included in Apple’s Best of AppleTV list in 2016. Minilab’s apps have collectively been downloaded 1.5 million times and counting.

Nobrow is an independent London based publisher of picture books and comics for all ages. Their award-winning children’s imprint Flying Eye Books has three shortlisted titles for this years CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.

Ingenious Devices: Storybuilding through Comics led by Suzanne Joinson & Dylan CalderAn imaginative enquiry into the role comics-making can play in developing and teaching complex editorial skills, this conversation will be led by Stephen Spender Trust’s Suzanne Joinson and Pop Up’s Dylan Calder with Estonian, Latvian and British graphic artists: Joonas Sildre, Oskars Pavlovskis, Karrie Fransman and Asia Alfasi.

Suzanne Joinson is Director of the Stephen Spender Trust, which was established in 1997 to honour Stephen Spender’s achievements as poet and translator of poetry, and as champion of the rights of artists and writers to free expression. Inspired by his literary interests and achievements, the Trust aims to widen appreciation of the literary legacy of Stephen Spender and his contemporaries and to promote literary translation.

Dylan Calder is founder and Director of Pop Up Projects. Prior to Pop Up he worked with 100’s of schools producing and teaching large-scale creative literacy projects for 5-21 year olds, including for National Youth Theatre, University of the Arts, Shoreditch Trust, The Ideas Foundation, London South Bank University, as well as major strategic, multi-year projects for Camden, Waltham Forest, Hounslow, Southwark and Hackney local authorities.

Magali Homs is Director of Tantàgora, a cross-disciplinary forum for the creation, production and sharing of innovative literary formats. Tantàgora promotes all forms of literature and the visual arts for all types of readers. They also host the FLIC, an annual literary and arts festival for children.

Everyone’s A Translator French-language children’s literature translator Sarah Ardizzone guides participants through the translation of sequential pictures, so that they become code-cracking language detectives and collaboratively produce a creative translation - without needing to read or speak French.

Sarah Ardizzone is an award-winning translator from French of 40-something titles. These span picture books, children’s and YA, to graphic novels and literary fiction from Algeria, Congo Brazzaville and Burundi.

Translators in Schools provide a professional development programme to widen the pool of translators and teachers with the skills to run creative translation workshops in schools, also offering additional public events and consultancy as part of a multilingual creativity movement.

Using basic digital tools to relay the Iranian art of Pardekhani, Alia Alzougbi will explore non-verbal capacity while participants hear and tell a story in another language - alongside practical extensions for use in school environments.

Alia Alzougbi is a BAFTA nominated actress and storyteller. She is among the core teaching staff for the British Museum’s Young Audiences team.
