PONTCHARTRAIN YACHT CLUB SEPTEMBER 2016 THE CHART COMMODORE’S CORNER– KEN BUHLER I hope that our PYC family fared well with the Great Flood of 2016. Our members and friends in Baton Rouge didn’t fair so well. Many of our members are helping out cooking and tearing out sheetrock and helping the best way they can, which includes monetary contributions. Many of you know the feeling as we passed the anniversary of Katrina and the storms that followed her. Be compassionate we were spared this one. School’s back and the club is now a little quieter. We turned out many new junior sailors this summer ,but that is not the end . Mike and the PYC board are working on the ongoing Junior program, making it a sustainable part of the PYC family. So, all the new members with young children please consider having your sailors help write the new chapter in PYC sailing. This could be your legacy. Speaking of School’s Back we need your support of our next big Regatta. We need power boats ,shore support, registration, and many other essentials for hosting a premiere regatta. I know PYC will meet the call. Many of us will make the trip over to Buccaneer Yacht Club to support our Lipton Cup team. They have been very diligent in their preparation. Good Luck Team!!! PHRF sailing is getting prepared for the fall racing season. Summer sailing was hot but we had many more boats climaxing with a lightning filled finish. Next year PYC will celebrate its Golden anniversary. Many sailors have made immense contributions to formation and founding of what we call the PYC family. This celebratory year will have many unique events. We are already working on the planning of this great anniversary so if you have any memorabilia, stories ,facts, point of internets or items that will make it more special contact me or the office. In closing, PYC is a family and we are growing, thanks to the friendliness of our members and the product of PYC. We look forward to our new members creating and contributing to the next 50 years of PYC history. Ken

COMMODORE’S CORNER– KEN BUHLER

I hope that our PYC family fared well with the Great Flood of 2016.

We will be preparing our race scot (Welcome to the Jungle) and Sea Shepherd today for the journey to Mobile for the Lipton Regatta this weekend at Buccaneer Yacht Club. PYC will have a team racing the flying scot and hope you will come to Mobile to cheer on your club, skipper and crew. The skippers are Max Albert, Susan Danielson, Mike McKnight and Tom Barclay.

We held another Viper fund raiser during Caribe in which we raffled off a reserved parking space. Congratulations to David and Kathleen Sides!!!!

All of our flying scots are in good working order and just waiting to be sailed by YOU! Small boat sailing is the perfect opportunity for you to get out on water. Please be prepared to do your own rigging and derigging on Thursday evenings. Contact Mike with any questions 985-789-8259.

Vipers, Scots and VX Ones are racing in the upcoming Back to School/Dinghy Cup Regatta on the 10th and 11th. Anyone interested in racing, please contact me.

As this is written we are preparing for Lipton’s at Buccaneer Yacht Club with the threat of Tropical Storm Hermine wreaking havoc on the capstone one design regatta of the year.

Let us wish our sailors good luck and safe sailing. They have been working very hard in practice and boat preparations for this regatta.

As Chair of the nominating committee, I am pleased to report that we have several outstanding candidates who have stepped up for Board positions. We also have had several members step up and volunteer to help board members in the execution of their responsibilities. We have one more position to fill so if you are inclined please let me know.

Speaking of volunteers: The annual ‘Back to School Regatta’/Dinghy Challenge Cup will be held September 10-11, 2016. We will need volunteers as always to help conduct this regatta. We will need help on the water with race management. Anyone who would like to learn about running these races on the water please let Chris Friend or myself know. It’s easy and fun. Help will be needed also for registration, T-shirt sales, kitchen and elsewhere.

The Veteran’s Regatta will be held on Sept 17th and as always volunteers are needed and welcomed. More to follow on Kaia’s daily emails to the membership.

A very successful Sail Camp season is over. The fall is upon us (in name only). We have our annual Back to School Regatta and 3rd Annual Dinghy Challenge Cup on September 10-11. Please join us either as a competitor or volunteer! The VX Ones and Vipers will race each other while the James Edwards Trophy is up for grabs: the best combined team of a Flying Scot, 420, Sunfish or Laser, and Optimist. Anyone may sail (except Opti’s: those are reserved for the less venerable). Teams can be formed the day of the regatta and can be from any club.

We will have sailing clinics in October with a two day Optimist Green Fleet clinic on October 8-9 and a two day 420 clinic on October 22-23. Contact Mike at [email protected] or call the office. Also, you don’t have to wait for a clinic to go sailing!

See you on the water!

RACE– BRIAN KEATING

August has come and gone and the heat of summer had some impact on the more mature skippers in the non-spin class but the younger more active spinnaker class actually wanted more on-water time. We have tried to fill in some additional Saturdays with crew practice and team development.

The replacement “P” mark is being repaired and we hope to have it on station by LPRC. Thanks to Gerald Sellar, and Henry Barousse for helping move it to our yard and with the rest of the project.

There has been a committee formed to take a look at the boatyard and make recommendations on utilization; suggestions are welcome.

There are several upcoming events:

1. September 17: Veterans from two local groups have been invited to join us for some fun at the club for the 2nd Annual PYC Veterans Regatta . We are putting together activities that will include: Fun’d races (PHRF staggered Start & Portsmouth), food, live music, raffles, etc. We need skippers who are willing to have veterans onboard to get their boats out for the event.

2. September 24: PYC skippers have been invited to sail over to Tammany YC for a pig roast Saturday evening and race on Sunday. Some Tammany boats may sail our way on Friday, spend the night in Mandeville and sail back to Tammany with us on Saturday. We have been trying to put together a reciprocal annual event with Tammany (more details later).

3. End of October: PYC is the host this year for LPRC. We are trying to increase the number of participants this year. A Classic Class which will sail fewer and shorter races has been added.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can get through the month of September without any tropical disturbances. The club

gardens are looking quite spectacular this time of year with all the rain that we have been experiencing. We successfully and

beautifully hosted The Southern Nights fundraiser for Safe Harbor in late July. What a beautiful event. I have never seen the club

look more beautifu. This month we host The St. Tammany Humane Society Unleashed: RESCUE ME!!!! Gala on Saturday

September 24, 2016, which will include food exclusively catered by Pardo’s and The Lakehouse. Musical entertainment in our

own backyard will by the infamous “4 Unplugged”. This will be another showcase event for the Yacht Club and potential new

members will be in attendance. I hope club members plan to attend and help sell the PYC lifestyle. The party starts at dusk.

If anyone has any interest in working in the club gardens, please email me at [email protected]. I would be thrilled to

have you participate.

Happy Labor Day 2016!

SOCIAL– MARIAN ARROWSMITH Thanks to everyone who volunteered for our many activities in August! What a great ending with our annual Caribe Party! Once again it was a great success and that took a lot of help from many of our members!

Now we are rolling into September and once again we have a lot of fun activities planned. A great way to meet other members and make new friends is to volunteer so look over what we have coming up and plan to come out and help. If you need more information, feel free to email or call me. Come get involved!

To start the month is a Saints game on Thursday, September 1. Bring an appetizer and come watch the game at the club. Let’s hope the team greatly improves over the first three games. Friday night there will be food and a movie! Check out Kaia’s emails for more information.

Labor Day is Monday, September 5th. The club will be open from noon to 8p.m. So come out and enjoy the pool, the yard, the bar, etc. Bring a picnic or something to cook on the grill.

Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 is the planning meeting for our Funky Fall Ball. Wednesday, September 7th is the Membership Mixer. The week-end of September 10 -11, is the Back To School Regatta and lots of volunteers are needed.

Because the Dew Drop Friday night concerts begin again in September, we will only have Friday night dinners on September 2nd and September 16th. If you would like to help with one of those, please contact Rebecca Choate. Dew Drop will have their concerts on Friday, September 9th and 23rd. The last Friday night of the month is Friday, September 30th and that is our Funky Fall Ball. You will see flyers out soon telling you more about this fun event. It is from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.

There will be wonderful hor dourves to feast on and we will have The Wardell Williams Band entertaining us with “funky New Orleans music”. Be sure to put that date on your calendar now!

Other activities include the Regatta on September 17th to support our veterans; Brian Jones on Sunday, September 18th at 4:00 with an open mic (We invite anyone who wants to sing or play an instrument to come out and join Brian. It is always lots of fun!) and Saints games on Sunday, September 11th, 18th and 25th. Bring an appetizer and come cheer for the Saints!

On Saturday, September 24th there is a huge fundraiser for the St. Tammany Humane Society. Scott Discon is chairing this event so if you want to help, contact him.

Our Book Club will meet on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:45. The book this month is Dreamers of the Day, by Mary Doria Russell. Jane Willis will be the facilitator. Feel free to come to the meeting whether you have read the book or not. It is interesting to hear the discussions and learn about different books.

As always, I am open for your ideas and suggestions. It is by working together that we continue to make PYC a wonderful club and a great place to have fun! Thanks for everyone’s help!

Perfect sailing weather (at least for us cruiser types) is right around the corner!! But first, let s welcome our new applicants:

Jason and Anne Rooks

The Rooks are returning members. They have three children, Caroline, Sarah & Kate. Jason and Anne are interested in helping with Social Events.

Bob and Karen Christ Bob and Karen, with their two children Jacob and Graham are also returning members. They currently have a 28’ Pearson and are interested in racing, cruising and sailing (pretty much all of it!) and want to help out with Race/Regattas. Charles (C.J.) Christ Name look familiar? This is Bob Christ’s father. C.J. comes to us an experienced and passionate mariner. He also wants to be involved with Race/Regattas. Lori Prudhomme Lori is a Mandeville resident. Marian Arrowsmith speaks highly of Lori and was very excited to hear she has applied for membership. Gary and Alice Lauve The Lauve’s come to us from Pelican Yacht Club in New Roads, LA. They are interested in day sailing & cruising and want to help out with House & Grounds. I’m not sure how many of our members are aware of the unfortunate situation that is happening to Pelican Yacht Club. A couple of months ago they lost the lease on the property that had been their home for many years. They have tried to regroup but seem to be struggling. PYC has been approached by several of their members (the Lauve’s as an example), inquiring about joining our club. We’ve been careful to do the right and not aggressively pursue Pelican Members but at the same time have been diligent in informing them of what PYC has to offer. We anticipate seeing more Pelican Yacht Club members joining PYC. As I appreciate it, they had a very active sailing club. As always, let’s welcoming former Pelican Yacht Club members with open arms to out PYC family. As fall closes in, I start thinking about some of the upcoming events where we will have a membership presence. The first one that comes to mind is the Wooden Boat Festival in Madisonville this October 8th and 9th. We need volunteers to represent us by staffing our PYC Membership tent. We usually do two hour slots with one or two people per slot. For your efforts you’ll get an all-day pass to the event. Please email if you’d like to help. Be sure to specify which day (or both!) and whether you’d like to do an afternoon or morning slot. We will have a membership mixer September 7th from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. These mixers are a chance for our members to mingle, with an emphasis on new and prospective members. It’s the perfect opportunity to bring a friend or family member that may be interested in becoming part of our great PYC family. Be on the lookout for an email from Kaia with a spiff for bringing a prospective member! Thanks and Happy Sailing!!!
