DESCRIPTION

Siaya County is located in the south-western parts of Kenya bordering Busia County to the north and Kisumu County to the south-east. Siaya County is inhabited by nine communities namely: Yimbo, Alego, Uyoma, Gem, Ugenya, Sakwa, Usonga, Asembo and Uholo. Siaya County shares the shores of Lake Victoria together with other neighbouring counties. Siaya town the capital of the county is an economic hub with massive potential for providing for the country’s needs. Siaya has had various prominent persons call their origin including the US President Barack Obama.Siaya County is made up of the initial Siaya District, Bondo District, Gem District and Ugunja District. Siaya District was initially divided into seven administrative divisions: Yala, Wagai, Karemo, Ugunja, Boro, Uranga, and Ukwala. The largest division is Ukwala with an area of 319 km2, followed by Karemo with an area of 235.1 km2, while Boro is the smallest division with a total area of 180.1 km2. There are five local authorities in the County with a total of 56 electoral wards distributed as follows: Siaya County Council (29 wards), Siaya Municipal Council (7 wards), Ugunja Town Council (7 wards), Ukwala Town Council (7 wards), and Yala Town Council (6 wards). These Ward delimitation have however been revised by the IEBC and this information can be obtained from their website.

Education Statistics

ECD: Only 70% of children aged between 3 and 5

are attending pre-primary education in the district.

Primary: The net enrollment rate stands at 84.7%;

with male standing at 84% and female at 85.7%.

Secondary: Only 43% of the population aged 14 -

17 years do join secondary education. Net

enrollment rate stands at 19.8% with male at

19.1% and female at 20.5%.

University: Only 6.1% of those ages 18 - 24 were

enrolled in universities.

Disability: Only 19.6 of enrolled students in

secondary schools were persons with disabilities.

Health Statistics

Number of health facilities = 160; of which:

- 12 are hospitals; 40 are health centres; 4

are nursing homes; 78 are dispensaries

and 26 are clinics.

HIV/AIDS prevalence rate = 24%;

Total bed capacity in whole district = 657;

Doctor/Population ratio:

- Bondo - 1:72, 390; Siaya - 1:52, 000

Siaya County Health Indicators

Women and Children bear the heaviest burdens of malaria, HIV/AIDS, and other preventable diseases.

HIV rates in the poorest sub-districts are over 40%.

The Maternal Mortality Ratio is very high at 456 per 100,000.

The Infant Mortality Rate is 77 per 1000 live Births.

There are only 22 health facilities in this region

There are only 3 Level 3 Facilities.

There is no facility able to conduct Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care, blood transfusion, or neonatal care.

Housing: 65.9% - iron sheets; 32.1% grass-

thatched.

wood/cement; and 13.5% - bricks/block walls.

Urban areas: 45.3% brick/block walls.

Rural areas: 9.8% brick/block walls.

Floor: Earth - 70% and Cement - 29%.
