With Crab Orchard’s 13-8 win over Audi in the finals of the 2010 United States Open Championship at the International Polo Club in Wellington, it became the first team to will all three trophies in the same season. It was in 2007 that Crab Orchard won both the U. S. Open and the Gold Cup; and White Birch won the US Open and the Whitney Cup in 2005, but the /Gold Cup was played in Aiken, South Carolina that year, and without a White Birch entry, the honors went to Fred Mannix and his Millerville team. Audi won the C. V. Whit-ney and the U. S. Open last year, but couldn’t hold it together for the Piaget Gold Cup win and had to settle for two-thirds of the Triple Crown.

The accomplishment achieved by Crab Orchard during the season was Hercu-lean in its efforts and accomplishments, and a fitting reward for the time and investment made in the team by George and Beverly Rawlings.

Wellington resident Julio Arellano put an exclamation on the last game of the high-goal season with three goals in the final chukker in a game in which they never trailed.

The fourth game of the season between the two titans, the Open final, was gree-ted with great anticipation by a hearty crowd that gathered under cloudy and threatening skies.

Crab Orchard won their first two encoun-ters with a 10-7 win in the C. V. Whitney and an embarrassing 18-11 romp over Audi in the Piaget Gold Cup, but that was where it ended. In their divisional meeting in the US Open, Audi moved 10-goaler Facundo Pieres from the Number 4 position, at the back of the lineup, to the Number 2 position at the front end of its attack. The adjustment resulted in nine goals from Facundo, inclu-ding the overtime penalty conversion that resulted in the 14-13 Audi win. In the final however, belonged to Crab Orchard as they took an early 3-1 lead after the first chukker, and never trailed.

Facundo Pieres cut the lead to a single goal with a penalty conversion at the start of the second period, but goals by Adolfo Cambiaso and Arellano took them into the third with a 5-2 advantage.

Again, Audi responded with a goal from Gonzalo Pieres to open the third chukker, but ensuing goals from Hilario Ulloa and Arellano ended the first half with Crab Orchard on top of a 7-3 score.

The Audi continued to attack in the fourth chukker, but a resilient Crab Orchard turned aside one drive after another.

Audi got on the scoreboard with a pair of penalty goals from Facundo Pieres, cutting the lead to two goals, but Crab Orchard returned the favor with an Arella-no penalty conversion to end the period riding an 8-5 lead.

The pace picked up in the fifth, with Facundo Pieres scoring the first goal of the period on a well-directed 70-yard shot for a goal. Ulloa responded with a goal from the field for Crab Orchard before Audi team captain Marc Ganzi barreled one through from over 80-yards.

With just 22 seconds left in the chukker, Ulloa fought his way through a crowd in front of the Audi goal and scored his third goal of the day to end the period. Crab Orchard rode off the field to change mounts with a 10-7 lead and just seven-and-a-half minutes to play.

Arellano scored in the first 25 seconds of the sixth chukker, followed by a goal from Audi’s Inaki Laprida just over a minute later, but Crab Orchard remained in control of the game.

Arellano converted a penal-ty shot for a goal and a 12-8 lead. Audi continued to try and organize an effective attack, but couldn’t get any momentum to their less than organized effort. Arellano scored the final goal of the game on a great run that had his initial shot hit the left goalpost. The ball bounced off, and at speed, while galloping past the ball, he tapped it through for the 13-8 final.

Hilario Ulloa was named Most Valuable player in the Open finals while Julio Arellano’s eight-year-old, brown Thoroughbred mare, True, received Best Playing Pony honors.

Golden Crab Orchard

A veteran and balanced Crab Orchard attack scored seven straight goals from the third chukker to the fifth in taking the 2010 USPA Piaget Gold Cup champions-hip Sunday afternoon in the finals against Las Monjitas at the International Polo Club.“I was both pleased and excited to see over five thousand spectators on hand for the championship game,“ said Yves Piaget who was on hand for the game and the presentation ceremony. “It was like the old days at Palm Beach Polo and Country

Club. I am so pleased that Piaget has taken such an active part in this great game.”The day began with ominous clouds filling the skies that later gave way to breaks and streams of sunlight and mild temperatures with gentle, easterly winds.Yves Piaget, patriarch of the distinguished Swill family that had elevated the manner of watchmaking to a fine art, had returned to Wellington, Florida to witness the finals of the 2010 USPA Piaget Gold Cup, and a view of some of the game’s top players at the International Polo Club.

Complimented by Piaget North America President Larry Boland and the helicopter arrival of television’s Jeffrey Donovan, star of the hit series, Burn Notice and the largest crowd in Piaget Gold Cup history, and the preliminary match of the day-the finals of the 2010 Butler Handicap- the International Polo Club presented the second 26-goal tournament finals of the season.Because of the amount of talent on the field, the game got off to a surprisingly slow start. Las Monjitas got on the score-board first with penalty goals from brothers Javier and Alejandro Astrada. Crab Orchard got a goal from Hilario Ulloa to end the chukker trailing 2-1.

Julio Arellano tied the score at 2-2 with a penalty conversion followed by a go-ahead goal from Adolfo Cambiaso. Arellano’s second goal 0f the chukker, a ninety-yard shot through the goal posts, had Crab Orchard ahead 4-2 until Javier Astrada managed a chukker ending goal for Las Monjitas. Crab Orchard held on to a 4-3 lead.

Defenses tightened in the third chukker, with Cambiaso supplying all of the firepower with a pair of goals from the field, and the teams ended the first half with Crab Orchard holding a 6-3 advanta-ge.

Facundo Pieres replaced Eduado Novillo Astra in Las Monjitas Polo Team.

Crab Orchard returned to the pitch in the fourth chukker a renewed team. A goal from Ulloa was followed by a pair of goals from Arellano. Cambiaso scored his fourth goal of the game to end the period with Crab Orchard holding on to a comman-ding 10-3 lead.

Although it was Las Monjitas team captain Camilo Bautista’s first game back since an early season injury, and their injured 10-goaler, Eduardo Astrada was replaced by Facundo Pieres, Crab Orchard was the far superior team from offense to defense.

Hilario Ulloa put Crab Orchard up 11-3 in the opening seconds of the fifth chukker before the sleeping offense of Las Monji-tas got back on track. Javier Astrada scored Las Monjitas’ first goal since the second chukker, and on a subsequent play, carried the ball the length of the field before having a goal shot blocked by Cambiaso. With less than three minutes left in the period, Alejandro Astrada converted a penalty goal for Las Monjitas, but the chukker ended with Crab Orchard holding a very comfortable lead of 11-5 with one chukker left to be played.

As if to remind the large Sunday crowd who they came to see, Cambiaso scored his fifth goal of the game to put Crab Orchard ahead by seven goals, 12-5.

Las Monjitas continued to try to organize an attack, but had to settle for a penalty goal from Alejandro Astrada before getting one last field goal from Javier Astrada. The final horn sounded as the Crab Orchard celebrated its second consecuti-ve major tournament championship of the year with a 12-7 win.Hilario Ulloa was named MVP while Julio Arellano’s Blue Dragon was named Best Playing Pony.

In another decisive game of high technical level and vibration the team of Crab Orchard, with Adolfo Cambiaso (h), Hilario Ulloa, George Rawlings and the Nicara-guan Julio Arellano, imposed the defini-tion and defeat by 11-9 to Valiente, with the brothers Miguel and Ignacio Novillo Astrada, with his young compatriot Cristian Laprida (h) and the American Bob Jonayrvaz, getting to the surprise of many attendees of the tournament by C.
