To assess the water quality of Kalyan Sagar and the state of the

natural habitat of Klayan Sagar lake, on November 06, 2014 a scientific

team of Tripura State Pollution Control Board visited the Kalyan Sagar and

collected water samples from Kalyan Sagar.

In order to assess the water quality of Kalyan Sagar, a scientific team

of Tripura State Pollution Control Board went to Udaipur and collected

water samples from four points covering the whole area of Kalyan Sagar on

6th November, 2014 and analysed the different parameters, that determine

water quality in the Laboratory of the Board.

The Physico-Chemical as well as bacteriological qualities of surface

water were analysed using the standard methods given in APHA (American

Public Health Association).

RESULTS :

The results of water samples collected from Kalyan Sagar, Udaipur are

shown in table-1 at page-2. The analytical observation and visual

observations are shown at pages-3. The conclusion & recommendations

based on this study are shown at page-4. The photographical representation

with respect to various activities in Kalyan Sagar are shown at pages 6-8.

ANALYTICAL OBSERVATIONS :

From the analytical report it is observed that the BOD values of four water

samples were higher than the prescribed standard limit (3.0 mg/l). The

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) for all the four water samples (S-1, S-2, S-

3 & S-4) were slightly higher than the prescribed standard limits. The

Turbidity of the water samples were also higher than the standard limit. The

DO value of the four water samples were slightly higher than the prescribed

standard value (6.0 mg/l). The remaining parameters were within the

prescribed standard limts.

Note:

If DO is above standard value (6 mg/l) the water quality is good.

If BOD is more than 3 mg/l the water quality is bad.

If COD is more than 250 mg/l the water quality is bad.

VISUAL OBSERVATION :

From the physical observation and interaction/discussion/interview with

the local people & shop owners in and around Kalyan Sagar, the team of

Tripura State Pollution Control Board gathered the following facts:

1. Aerators have been installed nearby the main ghat of Kalyan Sagar

which were not working.

2. Tourists are providing fish pellates for the turtle & fish in Kalyan

Sagar.

3. Tourists are taking bath mainly in the three ghats of western side and

local people are taking bath randomly on all sides of Kalyan Sagar

throughout day. Turtles & fishes may be restless due to this activity.

4. An outlet is there at the north-eastern corner of Kalyan Sagar (Near

Dhana Manikya Mukta Mancha) which is full of mud and wastes.

CONCLUSION :

From the result of water samples studied it is found that the water quality of

Kalyansagar, (Matabari), Udaipur, Gomati District is not suitable for

drinking & bathing purposes.

RECOMMENDATION :

Based on the analytical observation and Visual observation the

recommendations made by Tripura State Pollution Control Board are as

follows:

1. There should be specific bathing zone at the south or West side of

Kalyan Sagar for tourists as well as local people.

2. The light should be off during night time in and around the Hatchery.

3. The outlet should be cleaned up regularly.

4. Washing of clothes & utensils should be banned.

5. Population Survey for the fishes and Turtles in the Kalyan Sagar

should be done immediately.

6. Sufficient food should be given for the fishes and turtles in the Kalyan

Sagar as per the quantity of fishes and turtles.

Observation:

The water from the Kalyan Sagar, Udaipur was collected from above mentioned sites on 06.11.2014 by the board officials for analysis of physico-chemical parameters. The water samples were analyzed in the laboratory of TSPCB wing using standard methods given in APHA (American Public Health Association).

From the result table, it is observed that, (i) The value of Biochemical Oxygen Demand is found to high for all

samples as compared to standard value given in BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard).

(ii) The value of Chemical Oxygen Demand is also found as high as compared to standard value.
