Definition of Pollution
Addition of any substance to the environment at a rate faster than it
can be dispersed, diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some
harmless form.
The substance can be: solid, liquid, gas or any form of energy (such as
heat, sound, or radioactivity)
Major kinds of pollution:
• air pollution,
• land pollution,
• water pollution.
RATE FASTER: più velocemente
AIR POLLUTION
Caused by many humanactivities such as cooking,driving and industrialactivities;
These activities releasemany chemical substancesevery day into the air, thatrelease causes globalwarming and acid rain;
Air pollution has increasedtemperatures, making ittough for any form of lifeto survive.
INCREASE: aumentare – SURVIVE: sopravvivere
LAND POLLUTION
Land pollution means
degradation or destruction
of earth’s surface and soil,
directly or indirectly as a
result of human activities.
It is caused by many reasons
such as:
deforestation,
agricultural activities,
industrialization
SURFACE: superficie
WATER
POLLUTION
It is caused by wastes dumped
into the rivers and other water
bodies;
Also spraying insecticides,
pesticides like DDT on plants
pollutes the ground water
system and oil spills in the
oceans have caused irreparable
damage to water bodies.
Water pollution not only harms
the aquatic beings but it also
contaminates the entire food
chain by severely affecting
humans dependent on these.
CHAIN: catena
Water they say is life, and indeed they were right. With about
70% of the earth’s cover being water, it undeniably becomes
one of our greatest resources.
INDEED: certamente – UNDENIABLY: innegabilmente
Waste water: Wastewater is any water that has been affected by human use.
Types of wastewater include: domestic wastewater from households or industrial wastewater from industrial activities.
Households: may produce wastewater from flush toilets, sinks, dishwashers, washing machines, bath tubs, and showers.
Industrial activities: recent trends have been to minimize such production or to recycle treated wastewater within the production process .
River pollution: some of the most polluted rivers in the World
RIVER COUNTRY
GANGE INDIA
RIO BRAVO MEXICO and USA
ELK USA
DANUBE EUROPE
MEKONG ASIA
MURRAY-DARLING AUSTRALIA
NILE EGYPT
Gange:
Gange is considered to be the fifth most pollutedriver in the World.
The main causes of water pollution in the Gangeriver are:
Human waste: a large proportion of the sewagewater with higher organic load in the Gange is from thispopulation through domestic water usage.
Industrial waste: chemical plants grow along the sideof the river.
Religious traditions: during festival seasons, over 70million people bathe in the Gange to clean themselvesfrom their past sins.
SEWAGE: scarico – BATHE: fare il bagno
Sea pollution:
In the sea there are many kinds of pollution such as rubbish, oil, chemicals and
even sewage. In many ways it is our own actions that lead to pollution and in
some cases we can do something about it.
The Great Pacific
Garbage Patch:
The Great Pacific Garbage patch, also
described as the Pacific trash vortex, is
a gyre of marine debris particles in the
central North Pacific Ocean discovered
between 1985 and 1988.
The patch is characterized by
exceptionally high relative pelagic
concentrations of plastic, chemical
sludge, and other debris that have been
trapped by the currents of the North
Pacific Gyre.
It is a collection of marine debris in the
North Pacific Ocean.
It spans waters from the West Coast of
North America to Japan.
GYRE: vortice – DEBRIS: rifiuti - PELAGIC: oceanico – SLUDGE: poltiglia
Beach pollution:
Beach pollution is a persistent problem.
Nearly 4000 beach closings and advisories
were issued by the state and local
governments in 1995.
Studies have shown that beach pollution is
usually infrequent and confined to local
areas. Problems can develop in areas near
pollution sources after a heavy rainfall or
when a sewage treatment plant
malfunctions.
RAINFALL: precipitazione
Oil spills:
An oil spill is the release of a liquid
petroleum hydrocarbon into the
environment.
Oil spills penetrate into the structure
of the plumage of birds and the fur of
mammals, reducing its ability, and
making them more vulnerable to
temperature fluctuations.
Clean-up and recovery from an oil
spill is difficult and depends upon
many factors, including the type of oil
spilled, the temperature of the water
and the types of shorelines.
SHORELINES: bagnoasciuga
Water animals:
Acid rain kills fish in lakes and streams by increasing the acidity of water.
Water polluted with different chemicals can cause decline of population in many water species.
Water pollution can also lead to huge growth of toxic algae which when eaten by other animals
may cause serious diseases and death to these animals.
Many dolphins and other animals get caught up in the plastic that holds soda cans together.
These animals also get caught up and trapped in plastic bags and other plastic products that are
thrown into the ocean.
Land animals:
Animals can get entangled into trash that is polluting their environment and get stuck.
Animals might eat polluted trash in their environment which may lead to their death because of toxic
substances in the trash.
Animals may breathe in polluted air which could lead to them becoming ill or to their death.
Pollution from not recycling can cause our soil and plants to become toxic, harming the animals that
may eat plants or soils.
Some small things that everyone
can do to reduce water pollution:
DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other
type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink.
Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only
when you have a full load. This conserves
electricity and water.
Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides,
fertilizers.
Seabin project:
The Seabin is a floating rubbish
bin that is located in the water at
marinas, docks, yacht clubs and
commercial ports,
it moves up and down with the
range of tide collecting all floating
rubbish.
The Seabin also has the potential
to collect a percentage of oils and
pollutants floating on the water
surface.
DOCKS: moli
Plastic-eating bacteria:
Federica Bertocchini saw the worms pierce
a bag of polyethylene in a short time, a
material that in nature was disposed in
more than 400 years.
This discovery will solve the serious
problem of the presence of enormous
quantities of plastic present on the planet
that nature disposes of in more years.
22 April 2018:
The 2018 edition of the World
Earth Day, promoted by ONU
and celebrated on Sunday 22
April, was dedicated to the fight
against plastic pollution.
This problem is badly damaging
the oceans and lands, damaging
marine life and our health.
We chose to talk about the pollution because it’s a serious
problem that must be resolved as soon as possible to preserve the
destruction of the global ecosystem to allow next generations to
live in a healthy and clean planet. We decided to focus on water
pollution because water is the main source of life of humans,
animals and plants!
