INTRODUCTION The purpose of the publication is to communicate transfer policy to enrollment personnel in dealing with prospective transfers and to

faculty advisors and degree auditors in dealing with all types of transfer and testing credit. This publication is updated as changes are

made with changes being distributed on an as needed basis.

General transfer guidelines and the process of evaluating a transcript are outlined. Accreditation policy and articulation agreements,

where applicable, are defined. This information includes the policy for consideration of credit from institutions in candidacy status

with accreditation and from non-regionally accredited institutions. A sample letter is included to assist the student in requesting

supporting information. The text of the cover letter that accompanies transcript evaluations sent to students is also included.

Following are pages dealing primarily with the specifics regarding the transfer of undergraduate credit to Union University. The

acceptance of credit into core curriculum, both general core and specific cores, are addressed first. Each academic department’s

specific policies for the acceptance of transfer credit follow.

TYPES OF ACCREDITATION AND GENERAL TRANSFER POLICY

Regional Accreditation Policy: Union University accepts all college level credit earned through institutions of higher

learning that hold regional accreditation in coursework where a grade of C or higher is earned. Exception: Courses with

grades of D will be accepted only when the credit was applied toward the diploma or degree awarded to the student as

documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution and to include documentation of their acceptance of a D in

transfer.

What is Regional Accreditation? Union’s is SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools); each association has a

regional designation in its name. Each association operates independently. Current membership (accreditation status)

often can be researched on the website of the appropriate regional association. By name, the regional accrediting agencies

are: Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central

Association of Colleges and Schools, Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, SACS, and Western Association of

Schools and Colleges.

What is college level credit? Coursework that applies toward a college degree is typically numbered 100 or higher.

Courses numbered less than 100 are usually remedial and will not transfer. Many transcripts have a key attached or on

their reverse side to explain course levels. Courses that bear a number of 100 or higher but indicate within their title they

are remedial will not be accepted. Coursework must be directly related and appropriate to the purpose and goals of Union

University and the degrees awarded.

Bible College Accreditation Policy: Credits earned with the grade of C or better are provisionally accepted from colleges

accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE). Those credits are fully accepted upon the student's

successful completion of one semester at Union University. Successful completion is defined as a 2.0 GPA in 12 semester

hours attempted at Union. Regional accreditation is overarching; ABHE is part of the consideration only if the school is

not regionally accredited.

Policy regarding Credit from Institutions of Higher Learning who have neither ABHE nor Regional Accreditation: In

order to establish criteria concerning qualified faculty and equivalent learning, the chief academic officer must provide

written verification of minimum degree requirements for faculty, the minimum number of graduate hours required in the

teaching area, and how long this policy has been in place. Once the former has been satisfied, the credit is provisionally

accepted until the student has obtained a 2.0 GPA in 12 semester hours attempted at Union. The policy as passed by the

Academic Council and a sample letter that can be used to help the student write a letter follow.

Page 4: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

Credit by Testing Policy: Following the minimum score recommendations of The American Council on Education (ACE),

Union University awards credit for satisfactory performance in Advanced Placement (CEEB) exams, College Level

Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES. The awarding of credit for International Baccalaureate (IB) has been

established within the university on a departmental basis; not all departments award credit. Course parallels are detailed in

the catalogue under "Special Advanced Placement Policies" in the Admissions chapter; however those awards are not

restricted to the admission process period.

Union awards credit for military experience/training, Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES),

and non-collegiate sponsored instruction in accordance with the recommendations of the American Council on Education

and in compliance with Union's participation in the Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Program. College-level

credits are awarded as parallels or departmental electives as appropriate; where applicable they do meet degree

requirements. The maximum credit accepted by testing is 32 semester hours; when more than 32 hours are earned the 32

hours that best satisfy the student’s requirements and wishes are applied to the degree. NOTE: Recommendations for

military and other non-traditional education by ACE are made in 4 categories: no credit, vocational credit, lower division

college credit, and upper division college credit; UU will acknowledge equivalencies in the last two categories.

Credit for Prior Learning/Portfolio Credit Policy: Is transferable only into programs that award CPL credit. Presently

only the BSOL program awards CPL credit. BSOL students work with the Director of Prior Learning in developing the

portfolio. Additional information is available in the Adult Studies section of the Catalogue.

Time Expiration of Undergraduate Credit: Union University does not impose a time limit on undergraduate credit;

however, the Nursing Program of Union University does not accept Human Anatomy & Physiology and Pathophysiology

credit that is more than 5 years old at the time the student is to begin clinical study. Current knowledge from A&P credit

older than 5 years can potentially be validated by the student’s passing the NLN Anatomy Examination; see the School of

Nursing for details.

Transcript Evaluation Procedure: Official transcripts received by enrollment personnel are logged as received, copied for

the counselor’s reference, and forwarded to the Registrar for evaluation provided the student has an application to the

university on file. The transcripts are logged as received in the Academic Center, checked for previous (partial)

evaluations, and evaluated. The evaluation report is entered into the student’s computer file and a copy emailed to the

student; a duplicate report is maintained with the transcript in the AC awaiting the arrival of the paper admission file on the

student. Upon arrival of the admission file at the beginning of the semester, the transcript and evaluation report will be

added to the file for retention, no less than 5 years after the student discontinues enrollment at Union University. The

transfer credit posted to the computer is viewable to Union faculty & staff under the “legitimate need to know” clause of

FERPA with the same security measures as Union credit is viewable.

Transcripts, test reports and all other documents received become the property of Union University. They cannot be copied

for a party outside UU, including the student, nor can they be transferred to another institution. They may only be copied

for UU use in accordance with the “legitimate need to know” clause of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act,

FERPA.

Official reports of testing in consideration for credit by testing are handled in the Academic Center in a similar manner as

transcripts. As with transcripts, only official documents are evaluated.

Freshmen with Credit: Freshmen who have earned college credits by Dual Enrollment (college and high school

simultaneously) or by credit by testing will have their credits evaluated in the same manner as transfer students. Freshmen

cannot use Dual Enrollment or Testing Credit to earn sophomore status before completion of their first semester as a full-

time student in college following high school graduation. The credits will be posted but the student level will not be

Page 5: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

5

updated as sophomore until the first Fall or Spring Semester is completed with grades processed as an “FF,” first-time

freshman per IPEDS (of the National Center for Education Statistics of the federal government) definition requires.

Evaluation of Courses bearing Reciprocal Credit: Courses allowed for reciprocal credit at the former institution may be

used in either category regardless of the prefix shown on the transcript. Consideration is given to the student’s program of

study and the department of assignment at Union University.

Transfer of Graduate Credit Policy: Restrictions regarding minimum grade and time expiration upon the acceptability of

transfer graduate credit are detailed in the Graduate Catalogue and vary by program.

The Registrar will award transfer graduate credit for courses with grades of A or B upon recommendation of Program

Directors for degree seekers of our graduate programs. Application of the coursework to the student's graduate

program/degree is determined by the Dean or Director of the respective program. Previous graduate work is not evaluated

on non-degree or non-licensure seekers or those seeking advanced degrees except as applicable to those degrees.

Undergraduate credit is evaluated only as it applies to prerequisites or for teacher licensure but is not posted to the

transcript.

In rare cases, graduate credit may be used in the documentation of prerequisites content of a second bachelor degree

provided other criteria for that degree are met. See the undergraduate catalogue or inquire of the Registrar for additional

details.

NON-ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS

Criteria to Accept Transfer Credit from Institutions Not Regionally Accredited

As Approved by the Academic Council, June 1, 1999

Before transfer credit is accepted at Union from institutions of higher learning that are not regionally accredited,

criteria concerning qualified faculty and equivalent learning must be satisfied. The institution must have

qualified faculty defined as those with a master degree and 18 graduate hours in the teaching field. In order to

verify that the institution has a qualified faculty, the chief academic officer of the institution in question would

be asked to provide Union, in writing, the following information about that institution's faculty:

a) minimum degree requirement

b) number of graduate hours required in the teaching area

c) how long this policy has been in place.

Once the above is satisfied, the student's credit is posted as EE, Expected Equivalency, and held in escrow.

Upon the student's obtaining a 2.0 GPA in a minimum of 12 hours of coursework at Union, the credit is fully

accepted with credits and grades added to the posting to the student's academic record in accordance with usual

transfer policies. The following letter is sent by the Academic Center as applicable.

TRANSFER SUMMARY COVER LETTER

Official transcripts sent to Union University by applicants for admission are evaluated and processed as received.

An additional, updated transcript from your former school must be personally requested by you if your record

includes courses In Progress.

The record of a student applying to a program of Union University (Teacher Ed., Social Work, and Nursing)

is evaluated in accordance with the requirements of that particular program but only as that program deems

applicable. The Program/Department reserves the right to restrict application of coursework within their program.

Evaluation toward a program does not imply acceptance by that program.

In reading the enclosed evaluation please keep the following policies in mind:

Transfer credits are accepted as semester hours on the level on which they were earned regardless

of the level of the Union parallel course.

Grades of “D” are acceptable in transfer only if used by the previous institution in their awarding

a degree and those accepted in transfer by the awarding institution.

All college level courses with acceptable grades from community colleges are transferable to Union:

however, only 72 semester hours are applicable toward the degree. In the event you have

earned more than 72 semester hours (total from all community colleges) you will be assisted in

the selection of the 72 hours that best satisfy the program you wish to pursue at Union University.

The required 39 upper-level hours for the bachelor degree are applicable from all sources—core,

major, minor, elective; residence or transfer.

Residency hours (earned at UU) must total no less than 25% of the hours required for the degree to

include 15 upper level (junior/senior) hours in each major and 6 upper-level in each minor.

Transcripts are evaluated toward the program of study indicated by the student; a change of program

may require re-evaluation. Evaluation does not imply acceptance by that program.

Courses evaluated with a departmental prefix and “elective” are applicable in degree requirements as

electives in that department are allowed. If evaluated as “Elective” without a departmental prefix it only

applies toward the minimum hours for graduation and can satisfy no specific requirement

for graduation. You may present additional information (course description/syllabus) for reconsideration.

Enrollment at Union University affects the policies applicable to transfer credit, particularly in respect to

concurrent enrollment. Acceptance restrictions are placed on testing, extension, and correspondence credit

as well as community college credits and any concurrent enrollment. After enrollment at Union, the

university expects exclusive enrollment at Union University except where allowed by policy or by approval

of the Registrar prior to enrollment.

**Please refer your questions to the Academic Center at 731.661.5040.

THE UNION STUDENT SEEKING TO TRANSFER HOURS

AFTER BECOMING A UNION STUDENT

Union University students considering transferring courses from another regionally accredited institution must

obtain prior, written permission from the Office of the Registrar to transfer credit if:

(1) Student wishes to transfer course from a junior/community college hours after having earned 70 semester

hours (total from all schools, credit by testing, etc.), or

(2) Student has less than 12 hours to take the next semester to complete graduation requirements, or

(3) Student wishes to take courses at another school while enrolled (concurrent enrollment) in Union the same

semester/term.

Students should complete the “Transfer of Credit Application” which is located on the portal.

No permission is needed for credit-by-testing. However, tests must be completed no later than November 1, for

May/July graduates and no later than April 15, for December/January graduates.

Grades of C or above must be documented on an official transcript sent directly from the other institution to

Union University.

Students who do not need permission, as described above, may file a “Transfer of Credit Application” simply to

seek assurance the course will transfer and complete the intended requirement.

POLICIES FOR TRANSFER CREDIT INTO THE 2015 (and following) GENERAL

CORE CURRICULUM AT UNION UNIVERSITY FOR THOSE PROGRAMS NOT

SEEKING TEACHER LICENSURE

General Core Requirements must be distinct from Specific Core Requirements but may duplicate with hours in major(s) or minor(s).

Specific Core Requirements are detailed on following pages. Students seeking a second baccalaureate degree are only required to

complete the new major and its prerequisites (for a minimum of 30 hours) and are not required to meet other General or Specific Core

Requirements.

Programs may limit General Core Curriculum choices and designate courses as prerequisites to the major beyond the General Core

provided such limitations have been duly approved by University procedures. See the respective department for details.

Core Requirement UU Hours Parallel or Related Policy

ART 210 3 * or appreciation of a fine arts area(s); techniques (example: painting, voice) in fine arts

areas are not applicable.

ENG 111 & 112 6 ** freshman English (composition, second semester must include research project, cannot

transfer include remedial English, grammar or technical writing).

HIS 101 & 102 6 ** must be world history or world civilization; no substitutions allowed.

ENG 201 & 202, etc. 6 ** or sophomore level survey of literature (not narrow topics such as one genre or literary

period).

MAT 101, etc. 3 * any college-level math (ie, not remedial including courses entitled “introductory or

intermediate algebra); the transfer course in a math topic that is accepted as an

“Elective” is not applicable. A course accepted at a “MAT Elective” may be

used in general core.

PEWS 100, & 103 or 2 any PE activity course(s) to total 2 hrs; if the student is beyond "traditional" college age

by graduation (>24) it will be waived upon request. Swimming Proficiency not

mandated if hour requirement met by transfer credits.

CHR 111 & 112 6 ** any Old or New Testament course or studies of the books of the Bible.

PHY 111, etc. 4 *** any area of physical science.

BIO 100,112,110, or 221 4 *** any area of biological science.

COM 112 or 235 3 * no substitutions (only parallels).

one of: PSY 213, 3 * no substitutions (only parallels).

SOC 211, ECO 211,

ECO 212, HON 210,

PHL 240, PSC 211

* minimum acceptable credit is 2 semester hours (3 qtr. hours). The general core total of 46 hours does not have to

be maintained; the 128 hour minimum for graduation must be met.

** Quarter I (2 semester hours) plus Semester II (3 semester hours) is satisfactory in the ENG 111 & 112

requirement; any other 3 + 2 hours in a non-duplicating combination is satisfactory for the other requirements.

Equation of Quarter Hours to Semester Hours (ratio of 3 to 2):

5 quarter hours = 3 l/3 semester hours

4 = 2 2/3

3 = 2

2 = 1 1/3

1 = 2/3

*** Sciences must include at least one laboratory science; not all science credit can, then, be earned through credit-

by-testing.

If the student has an appropriate course in one area of science but is deficient in hours in that area of science and

has an excess of hours in the other area, the credits may be satisfied by the excess. Example: one quarter of Biology

(2 2/3 hours) and two quarters of Chemistry (5 l/3 hours) equals 8 semester hours and completes the requirement.

If the student brings eight semester hours in biological science (or 8 in physical science), his science requirement

is complete IF his program does not require additional science. Example: the Bachelor of Arts student or the

Bachelor of Science student using an option that does not require more than 8 hours in science will have satisfied the

requirement with 8 biological science (or 8 physical science) hours.

Additionally, if the student whose program only requires 8 science hours presents 7, he is not required to take an

additional science hour. No more than one hour of the eight is waived.

B.S.O.L. program in regard to the timing of exams prior to the student’s taking related courses in that program are

kept current in the Advanced Placement portion of the Admissions section of the Catalogue.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING (also known as Portfolio Credit) is applicable through UU and in transfer only in

the BSOL program. It is the awarding of credit for experiential learning using portfolio-style documentation of

learning. Students must be fully accepted and registered in the BSOL Program before submitting the portfolio. A

maximum of 15 hours may be awarded toward the BSOL degree through CPL. The student is guided through the

process by the Director for Prior Learning. The 15 CPL credits are applicable to the 32-hour category known as

Credit by Testing. CPL credit acknowledged on a transfer transcript can only be equated if given course parallels or

if supporting information can be provided regarding topics; summative entries such as “Life Experience…20 hours”

cannot be accepted in transfer without the supporting, clarifying information.

RGLee courses and Seminary Extension (ACE-approved only) may be applied as elective hours but are a part of the

32 semester hours maximum that includes credit by testing and other ACE-approved credit. Admission requirements

POLICY SPECIFIC TO MAJORS, MINORS AND PROGRAMS OF STUDY

For testing policies, please refer to the current catalogue.

TRANSFER EVALUATION BY ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT:

ART

210, THE ARTS IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION can be substituted with Fine Arts Appreciation in transfer (Art

App., Music App., Theatre App., and others upon individual consideration). Art history is acceptable for non-art

major/minor; music history/literature is acceptable for the non-music major/minor; Theatre appreciation is acceptable

for the non-communication arts major/minor.

TECHNIQUES/STUDIO COURSES will be transferred and applied to the major/minor at the discretion of the

department even if UU does not offer that medium provided major/minor residency is met otherwise. However,

credit for techniques is transferred as Art Elective; the course is not applied to the Art major/minor until the student's

portfolio has been evaluated as parallel to the UU course by the Art faculty. This evaluation is required only for the

application to the Art major/minor and has no bearing on their application to the B.A. specific core*. This caveat is

noted on the evaluation to the student.

TECHNICAL DRAWING will be accepted as art electives and will apply to the major/minor at the discretion of the

department.

*B.A. CORE ART COURSES are accepted in transfer only if they are accepted as the parallel of those courses

listing in the current catalogue as applicable to the BA core requirement and are subject to the same 6-hr limit

imposed on the resident student.

BIOLOGY

112, PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY is the major/minor requirement in residence, whereas BIO 100 (among other

options) is the general core requirement of non-majors. A 4-hour introductory Biology course, or 3-hour course if

containing a lab, may be accepted for the general core requirement of a non-biology major/minor, BIO 100. The

student who transfers a sequence of biology courses will be awarded BIO 112 credit in transfer; the student with only

the introductory course will be considered on a course by course basis in application to the major/minor.

A second semester of Principles/General Biology will be evaluated as BIO 213; however, the Biology advisor of the

major/minor may apply the course as 214 or 215, or biology elective hours in the major/minor if it is determined 213

at UU will better serve the student in the major/minor.

221 & 222, HUMAN ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY (I, II) cannot be applied toward the biology major/minor. The

time limit of 5 years only applies to BSN-basic and BSN-accelerated majors.

300 credit in application to a BSN cannot be more than 5 years old, nor can it be from a community college or with a

prefix other than BIO or NUR.

Page 19: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

19

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Pre-requisite and major courses are accepted into the School of Business Administration with same grade

requirements imposed on resident credit--each upper division course must be earned at least on the C level.

CHEMISTRY

111, GENERAL CHEMISTRY (or INTRODUCTORY) as a 3-hour course will be accepted in the general core

physical science requirement but not as 111 or 105 in the Chemistry major/minor program or in the Nursing

Programs unless it is determined that the course consisted of the equivalent of a 3-hour lecture and 2 or 3-hour lab

per week. A 4 or 5-hour course will apply to the Chemistry major/minor.

105, FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY I can be substituted by 111 or its equivalent in the Nursing Programs

since the program allows either course.

324, 326 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB I, II (2 semester hours each). With the change to two two-hour labs the

content of the former Organic II Lab (325) was added to Lab I and a new Lab II created with new content. Transfer

credit bearing Organic Lecture credit for 3 hours and Organic Lab credit for 1 hour per semester is equated as

Lecture credit for I (314) and Lab credit of only Lab I (324). Transfer credit for II (315) with lab will be credited as

credit for lecture II and a 2nd hour of 324 (lab I). The transfer student who majors or minors in chemistry will then

schedule 326 within his Union program to complete organic chemistry requirements applicable to his program of

study.

THE GENERAL CORE REQUIREMENT OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE can be covered in transfer by any related

course; the student is not restricted to the equivalents of CHE 105,111;PHY 111,213,231 but may apply courses in

the physical sciences such as Geology.

COMMUNICATION ARTS

112, PUBLIC COMMUNICATION is substituted in the general core curriculum and in the major/minor by any

public speaking course for one semester or one quarter.

COMMUNICATION ARTS COURSES IN THE BA CORE are applicable in transfer only when they are course

equivalents of applicable courses in UU curriculum.

The Department reserves the right to refuse transfer credit as parallel when technical equipment studied is not

comparable to Union’s and continued use of equipment is required; ie, it is viewed as a prerequisite lacking for

progression. The student will be awarded COM Elective credit.

Page 20: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

20

CONTINUING STUDIES

All tracks of the major in Organizational Leadership (B.S.O.L. degree) are cohort-delivered and do not allow

transfer of credit into the major itself. See The Adult Studies Core Curriculum above for details of transfer of credit

into that portion of the degree requirements.

There are credit by testing policies specific to the B.S.O.L. degree in regard to the timing of exams prior to the

student’s taking related courses in that program. These notations are kept up to date with curriculum changes in the

Advanced Placement portion of the Admissions section of the Catalogue.

EDUCATION

Credits evaluated for application to the Teacher Education Program and the Education Department as it pertains to

teacher licensure are evaluated on the basis of knowledge and skills gained in the course in accordance with the

current requirements by the State of Tennessee Department of Education for the program sought by the student. For

this reason, students transferring into the program or changing their major from another UU department may have

their transfer credits re-evaluated along these guidelines.

ENGINEERING

Engineering courses of parallel content with grades of C or better will be accepted provided they were earned in an

Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology, ABET, accredited program. Engineering credits with grades of

C or higher earned from a non-ABET program or from an Engineering Technology program will be reviewed on a

case-by-case basis by the Department of Engineering.

Core and prerequisite courses applicable to the BSE and housed in other academic departments (Mathematics,

Physics, Chemistry) are acceptable as credit-by-testing in accordance with policies established by their respective

departments.

ENGLISH

111,112 WRITTEN COMPOSITION I, II are substituted only by six semester hours of freshman level English

composition in transfer. If in a rare incident the student presents quarter one of composition (3 quarter/2 semester

hours equivalent) and successful completion of semester two such that a total of five semester hours are completed

the requirement is satisfied in the general core curriculum. The true parallel to 112 is Composition, research and an

Introduction to Literature; a college-level Composition II is considered to contain all components.

Remedial composition will not replace ENG 111,112.

201,202 WORLD LITERATURE I, II are substituted only by six semester hours of sophomore level survey of

literature in transfer. Upper level literature courses covering a narrow topic are not applicable; they will be

transferred as their appropriate parallel or as an English elective if there is no parallel in UU curriculum.

UPPER LEVEL ENGLISH COURSES earned in transfer are applicable in the English major/minor as appropriate;

ie, they are applied in the major in accordance with the category specified (period course, major writer course, genre

course, elective, etc.).

Page 21: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

21

HISTORY

101,102 WORLD CIVILIZATION (I, II) GENERAL CORE REQUIREMENT. No substitutions unless a student

completed US history I and II as a part of a completed associate’s degree.

211,212 THE UNITED STATES (I, II) are accepted by the transfer student is lieu of 101/102 and is required of

those resident and transfer students seeking teacher licensure and special education licensure. For those licensure

students 211/212 substitute for the General Core Requirement.

LANGUAGE

The Language Department reserves the right to place the freshman and transfer student in the appropriate entry level

course based on his high school/transfer school/personal experience level in the foreign language. Such placement is

by personal interview with the instructor, testing, and with consideration of academic transcripts. No credit is

awarded by UU for courses skipped.

111/112 and other levels of language credit are accepted in transfer in any foreign language; ie, transfer credit is not

limited to the languages offered at Union University. Transfer credit, as with resident credit, in Sign Language is not

applicable as a foreign language.

MATHEMATICS

Introductory or Intermediate Algebra is considered remedial mathematics content (not college level). Any course

bearing the title whether with a 0-level or 100-level course number is deemed remedial credit and not accepted.

101, FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS is substituted in transfer by Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I and

Concepts of Number as equivalent courses.

107, MATHEMATICS FOR LIBERAL ARTS is substituted in transfer by Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II

as the equivalent course.

MUSIC

111/112/211/212, THEORY I, II, III, IV are accepted in transfer as music electives pending individual evaluation of

the student's current abilities by the music theory faculty. The student is, then, placed on the level they can best

perform.

APPLIED PIANO or prior experience may substitute in transfer or in residence for 121/122/221/222, Class Piano I-

IV, upon the evaluation of the piano faculty.

Applied study placement is determined by audition or by performance in the 1st semester’s enrollment. The student

who has earned 8 or more hours in principal applied studies at the former institution will register for MUS 250

Page 22: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

22

during the first semester. At the end of the semester, the student will perform a sophomore board examination; board

examiners will issue one of the following determinations, prior to final grade reporting:

1. The semester’s work is that of an upper-level student. The applied instructor will change the current

semester’s enrollment to MUS 350 or 450 as appropriate.

2. The semester’s work is sufficient for advancement to upper-level work. The student will be

permitted to register for MUS 350 the next semester.

3. The work is insufficient for advancement to upper-level for the next semester. The student will

continue to register for MUS 250.

Music Ensembles are accepted in transfer for required ensemble only as appropriate to the student's major/minor and

its prescribed ensemble requirements.

DEPARTMENT NURSING: AS IT PERTAINS TO THE STUDENT WHO HAS NOT

YET EARNED REGISTERED NURSE LICENSURE

CLINICAL NURSING CREDITS from accredited baccalaureate programs with grades of C are accepted only as

electives pending evaluation of full syllabi by the nursing faculty. Nursing credits from Hospital Schools of Nursing

and Associate of Nursing degrees are not transferable unless the program is completed and the student duly licensed

(see below). Non-nursing credits from Hospital Schools of Nursing are not transferable, but proficiency may be

demonstrated by means of the credit-by-exam where a parallel course is available. LPN Clinical credit is applicable

only under the current LPN-RN program.

NURSING PRE-REQUISITE COURSES transferred from a regionally accredited institution follow the usual

university guidelines requiring a C in each course. Within those guidelines D's are acceptable only if earned in

application to an awarded degree or diploma; a maximum of seven semester hours of D is acceptable toward the

basic nursing program in the total program (transfer and residence credit). Human Anatomy & Physiology credits

Pathophysiology will not be accepted if they are more than 5 years old at the time the student is beginning clinical

instruction; however, current knowledge of A&P may be validated through ACE- or NLN-approved credit-by-testing

providing the original course(s) contained the required laboratory experience(s).

NURSING: AS IT PERTAINS TO THE STUDENT WHO HAS EARNED THE

REGISTERED NURSE LICENSURE (RN-BSN)

CLINICAL AND NON-CLINICAL NURSING CREDITS from accredited colleges from which the student

completed the nursing program earning the associate degree and was subsequently licensed are transferred in block

upon successful completion of Nursing 333 confirming lower division content. (The student is then awarded the

current hours to parallel basic nursing ed. at Union, 37 hours). The validation process awards hours applicable only

to the RN-BSN program and not to other programs of Union University. The time limit on Human A&P &

Pathophysiology credit does not apply to the RN-BSN student.

NURSING PRE-REQUISITE COURSES transferred from a regionally accredited institution follow the usual

university guidelines requiring a C in each course. The exception arises for the student that earns a diploma or

degree from that institution allowing the graduate to transfer grades of D.

GENERAL CORE CURRICULUM AS MODIFIED FOR THE RN-BSN STUDENT:

A. ENG 111-112, Composition I-II (6 semester hours)

Note: Speech is considered met through oral communication components of nursing clinical courses.

Page 23: Policies Governing the Transfer of Academic Credits to Union … · 2015-12-02 · Transfer of Academic Credits ... documented on the transcript of the degree-granting institution

23

B. Humanities (9)

Social Science Electives from history, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, geography,

anthropology (6)

E. Christian Studies (6)

CHR 111 and 112 or any Old or New Testament courses or studies of the books of the Bible.

F. MAT 114 (as a prerequisite to Nursing Research). Statistics content in a course not entirely equivalent to MAT

114 may be accepted as the prerequisite to Nursing Research; however, the student must present 3 college-level

math hours acceptable as the General Core Requirement.

G. Upper-level Electives (6)

Any electives earned at the 300 or 400 level and not applied to another degree requirement.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, WELLNESS AND SPORT

PEWS 100, FITNESS FOR HEALTH and the activity elective requirement in the general core curriculum are

accepted in transfer by any two hours of physical education activity. If the student exceeds standard college age

(>24), he will not be required to complete the PE activity requirements of the general core unless specified for his

program as it pertains to teacher licensure. The swimming proficiency requirement is not imposed in either

circumstance. NOTE: Classroom studies in nutrition, first aid, etc. do not substitute for the activity requirement.

PEWS 103, BEGINNING SWIMMING may be substituted in transfer or in residence with passing the swimming

proficiency for the PE major doing so solely to meet the teacher licensure requirements for PE K-12, initial or add-

on licensure.

PHYSICS

111. THE GENERAL CORE REQUIREMENT OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE can be covered in transfer by any

related course; the student is not restricted to the equivalents of CHE 105,111; PHY 111,213,231 but may apply

courses in the physical sciences such as Geology.

*When both Astronomy and Physical Geology are earned, they equate to PHY 112 toward the completion

of requirements toward the Elementary Education licensure. Neither can be earned for credit if PHY 112 has been

earned.

** Environment & Humanity is not the equivalent of PHY 310 but serves, in teacher licensure requiring

PHY 310, as a substitute containing the required knowledge and skills.

SOCIAL WORK

SW General Core Curriculum Specifications: General Core transfer substitutions as practiced by the university are

available for the BSW student except in regard to MAT 114; only parallel courses are acceptable for MAT 114.

The General Core Requirement for Oral Communication is documented as covered by the oral communication

components taught in the SW major curriculum and therefore not required in residence or in transfer.

SW 200 or any SW course is transferable into the SW major ONLY if it was taught at a CSWE accredited school

(FHU, UTM, etc.). From any school not accredited by CSWE, the course may be transferred as an elective; the SW

major must either repeat the course at UU or provide documentation of acceptable credentials of the faculty of

record and the course syllabus.

THEOLOGY AND MISSIONS

111/112, OLD/NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY are substituted in transfer by any Old Testament or New Testament

topic course for the general core curriculum requirement. The parallel assignment is made in accordance with the

topic of the transfer course; ie, a study of Mark would substitute for CHR 112. Non-Christian Studies (World

Religions, etc.) do not apply to this category but may have application where humanities are applied.

RG LEE CENTERS AND SEMINARY EXTENSION COURSEWORK are accepted as electives and do not apply

toward CHR majors/minors; they only apply to those degrees offered through the RG LEE Centers. With permission

the traditional degree student may apply up to 8 hours as electives toward the 128 provided the student meets RGLee

program admission requirements. The BSOL student meeting RGLee admission requirements may apply up to 32

hours as electives but in same category as ACE-approved credit and credit by testing.

Philosophy courses earned in transfer do not substitute for the religion general core curriculum requirement but have

application toward the BA specific core (with the 3-hour limit) as resident philosophy courses do.

THEOLOGY AND MISSIONS, SPECIFIC TO PROGRAMS OFFERED AT THE R.G.

LEE CENTERS

The ASSOCIATE OF CHRISTIAN STUDIES acceptable transfer credit maximum is 30 semester hours, including a

maximum of 12 hours of Seminary Extension credit.
