Numeracy Teaching

We will use the ‘learning journey’ steps to identify what pupils need to learn next. We will be using Abacus planning for resources and ideas. Each Numeracy lesson children will ‘have a go’ first and this will help them to self-assess. The teacher act as a facilitator. The teachers Name the work not the group: Getting going, Ready to rock, Jet setters and Rocket Racers. Workshops are then lead by the teaching assistant or teacher creating strategy posters of how to succeed with the learning. Maths experts are children that lead or they will use a show me app which showss how to be successful. Children then apply their learning.

Literacy Content:Our Literacy teaching is centred around the Pie Corbett story telling approach. The children will learn texts off by heart including: The Twist of Fate, Baboon on the Moon and a text based on Harry Potter.

I write all of the texts so that they are tailored to suit the needs of the children and have the appropriate level of challenge.

This includes talk for writing, innovating and inventing stories.Non fiction writing is then linked to this- including posters, instructions, reports and recounts.

How we plan:●Long term planning-this provides an overview of the year.●Medium term planning-provides us with a half term view.●Short term planning-is a weekly view of the lessons.

We follow the New National Curriculum when planning our teaching and learning.

The planning is based on previous assessment and attainment which helps to inform planning to meet the needs of all children.

Page 18: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)

Target Setting:●All children will be having their own personalised

targets- for Maths, Writing, Reading.●These are to help the children move forward with their learning and are tailored according to their personalised

next steps.●These also help the children take ownership of their own learning.

Please take time to look at your child’s targets and help them practice at home too.

Levels and new assessment system:

As you may be aware the New Curriculum was introduced in September 2014 and there is now an increased expectation on our children. Alongside this the old national curriculum levels of 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b etc no longer exist and don’t match the new national curriculum.

All schools have to set up their own way of assessing pupils attainment and progress. At St Piran’s Cross Trust we have worked with Mr Powers from Trevithick and we will be tracking pupils through ‘Steps.’

Page 20: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)

Each child will have their own learning journey which they will take

through their primary school education.

• Your child will be transferred from the previous system onto the appropriate ‘steps’.

Page 21: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)

Assessment:●Teacher assessments are gathered through out the academic year-based on professional judgment and using the appropriate criteria.●These are supported from the data collected from the formal SATs/tests. ●Pupils and teachers will be constantly assess whether they have achieved a lesson learning objective or step in their learning journal.●All of this data is then logged onto our pupil tracking system which helps us to set targets and monitor each child’s progress accurately and effectively offering the correct support and guidance.

How you can help!

The vital importance of parental support and help cannot be stressed enough.

Your children want to please you so help them in doing so!

Prompt start, early nights! This is important for both children and staff!

Page 23: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)

How to help with Maths:

You can support your child by encouraging them to assess their understanding of Maths and to become more independent with their learning. We have embraced a new approach in Maths lessons. The children assess the level of difficulty they need to work at, moving themselves on when ready, maximising their progress. This same approach will be taken with Maths homework. Consequently, if they find it too difficult, or too easy, please encourage them to discuss their homework with me, so we can ensure they are challenging themselves appropriately.

How to help with reading and spellings:

●Read at home every day and write in the diary. They will be rewarded for this and the children will see the benefits. Share stories, newspapers, comics with your child. Practise on teach your monster to read: http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/

Focus on asking questions about what your child has read. • Please practise the weekly spellings with your child and ask

them to put them into sentences to show their understanding of the words.

Page 25: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)

How to help with writing:

●Practise joined up writing and encourage neat handwriting. •You can support your child's Literacy by helping them with their vocabulary choices – you could have a new word of the day or week and encourage them to use it in their writing.

Page 26: Poldark Class Parent Welcome Meeting Miss Roberts (Class Teacher) Mrs Howe (Teaching Assistant) Mrs Ashby (Teaching Assistant) Miss Caruana (Teaching Assistant)
