IntroductionContext: Pokmon X and YPokmon X & Y is the sixth generation of the highly successful Pokmon video game franchise, selling over 10.5 million copies worldwide (VGChartz, 2014). The game is an adventure role-playing game (RPG), with turn-based battles with creatures known as Pokmon, in a 3-Dimensional, sandbox environment which the player navigates through by controlling the avatar. Thesis of this AssignmentThe aim of this assignment is to determine the most versatile Pokmon in accordance to each base stat present among 50 samples of Pokmon (highest in predetermined stat to lowest) within the current generation of games in the Pokmon franchise, Pokmon X & Y. The six stats that will be analysed will be Special Attack, Attack, Special Defence and Defence, in correlation with each Pokmons Health Points (For Defence, Special Defence) and Speed (For Attack, Special Attack).Defining VersatileA textbook definition of versatile would be The ability to adapt or be adapted into many different functions or activities (Oxford Dictionaries, 2014). For the purpose of this assignment, when defining versatile in context to Pokmon X & Y, it would be the aptitude of each Pokmon to adapt to a variety of different situations in battle, compared to similar Pokmon in the chosen stat.ConstraintsIn order to provide the most accurate results without any discrepancies, a number of constraints will be placed upon this assignment. ConstraintReason

A sample of 50 Pokmon will be taken for each stat.Top Pokmon of each stat, prevents the need to analyse Pokmon that have low stats in the chosen area.

Mega-Evolutions will not be included in the sample.Stat change to great will make discrepancies.

Natures, Effort Values and Individual Values will not be calculated. And decimal points will be rounded to the nearest whole number. It will deliver discrepancies into the collected data. And a large number of simulations will have to be developed.

In the last stage of elimination, the possible abilities of each Pokmon candidate will be analysed, and the ability that works best with the Pokmon will be used.As each Pokmon has access to 2-3 abilities, each one will be analysed to observe which ability best suits the Pokmon.

Legendary Pokmon will not be included in the sample.Stat values are too high compared to non-legendary Pokmon, will make discrepancies.

The sample will only contain fully evolved PokmonSo the values stay consistent.

HP will be directly correlated with Defence or Special Defence, and Speed will be directly correlated with Attack or Special AttackBecause of their relation to these stats, versatility of each Pokmon cannot be correctly correlated unless in relation.

Pokmon with two varying forms that activate in battles will not be calculateDiscrepancies in statistics.

Pokmon levels are set to 100, but maximum stats are not calculated, only the BASE stats,To assure the quality of the statistics gathered. And to compare the base stats brings no discrepancies.

Statistics (Each bast stat)Pokmon with the highest AttackPokmonAttackAverage Attack ((Sum of Attack values) / (Number of Pokmon)) = 129From this sample, we can determine the average of Attack stats, and therefore determine the number of turns it takes for the average Attack-based Pokmon to faint its opponent based on HP and Defence. It is also important to check if the data values are too spread out or not. A good way to check is too calculate the standard deviation, so...(Then find the average of each squared value, thereforeVariance = 92.8384Standard Deviation = Standard Deviation = 9.635269The Standard Deviation value is small in correlation with the Attack values of the Pokmon sample; therefore we can determine that the spread of the Attack values are small, preventing discrepancies in calculating the average data.

FormulasA quick noteBefore we write down the main formulas involved in calculating the potential of each Pokmon, its important to note down the basics of the game, the mechanics of battle go as followed:Special Attack effects Special Defence and HP (and vice versa)Attack effects Defence and HP (and vice versa)Speed determines which Pokmon moves firstThese are the main mechanics that determine the outcome of a battle.Calculating Speed, Attack, Sp. Attack, Defence, Sp. Defence and HPAccording to the many simulations ran both online and by myself to test which variables and stats are effected depending on the stat, The formula for calculating Speed, Attack, Sp. Attack, Defence and Sp. Defence of a Pokmon is:

However, as Individual Values (IV), Effort Values (EV) and Nature are not being calculated, and the level for each Pokmon is already set at 100, the formula can be simplified to be:

This formula also works with HP, as HP ignores Nature bonus, but as we have constraints, this formula can apply to calculating HP.ExampleCalculating the Speed of Weavile, which base stat is 125

Therefore Weaviles Speed stat at level 100 is 355

Calculating DamageAccording to the many simulations ran both online and by myself to test which variables and stats are effected when a Pokmon does damage to another Pokmon, it all comes down to this basic formula:

Where:a attack stat (Can be Special Attack or Attack, depending on the Pokmon and move in question)p attack power (the power of the move used)d defence stat(Can be Special Defence or Defence, depending on the Pokmon and move in question)s STAB (2 times the damage if Pokmon is using the same move as its type)w weakness/resistance of Pokmon depending on its typex Random number between 85 to 100, puts varying damage within the game For the purpose of this assignment, all Random numbers will be set to 100 to prevent discrepancies in the data gathered.

ExampleTrainer 1 orders his Hydreigon to use the move Dark Pulse (which has 80 attack power (not base stat)) on a enemy Gengar, soa 125 Special Attack (his base stat for Special Attack, and he is using a Special Attack move)p 80 Special Attack, Dark type move (as it is a special attack move)d 75 Special Defence (Gengars Special Defence Stat(not base stat), his resistance against the attack)s As Hydreigon used a move with correlates with one of its dual types, it does 1.5, if not its just 1w 2, as Gengar is weak to Dark type moves with one of his two types since he is a Ghost type, so it does two times the damagex 100 (reason stated above)

Hydreigon deals a total damage of 342, easily one hitting the Gengar with a 92 HP base stat (294 HP lvl 100).Step 1: Process of Elimination by survivability and pure offensiveThe first step of finding the most versatile Pokmon in Pokmon X & Y would be:For Attack and Special Attack:Each Pokmon is compared to the average Defence, Special Defence and HP of each stat, and depending on how many turns it takes faint a Pokmon, the Pokmon who take longer to faint the average defensive stat of the stat in question will be eliminated from the list. For Defence and Special Defence:Each Pokmon is compared to the average Attack, Special Attack and Speed of each stat, and depending on how many turn is takes for the Pokmon to faint, the Pokmon who lasts shortest against the average of the stat in question will be eliminated from the list.Pokmon types, ability and move pool will not be calculated in this step.Finding the Average Attack, Special Attack, Defence and SPecial DefenceWe know that the average attack of the sample of Pokmon with the highest Attack in the game is 127, so in accordance to the formula for calculating the amount of Attack the average Pokmon can do, we use the Stat formula:

Now same formula has to be used on the average of each stat which was calculated from the sample. With Special Attack = 116, Defence = 131, Average HP =119 and Special Defence = 119

367

Attack StatCalculating Damage Dealt and Number of Turns to KOWhen a Pokmon attacks someone using a power that correlates with the Attack stat, it is apparent that the Defence and HP stat are affected, so in order to determine how much damage the Pokmon does, the calculation of Attack stat will be compared to the average Defence (367). For the purpose of this calculation, the attack power will be 60, which is a suitable value to determine the average strength of a move.

Where a is the attack stat (at level 100) of the Pokmon in question, applying this formula to the Attack sample of Pokmon, and finding the calculated stat of each Pokmon. The next step would be to calculate how many hits it takes to faint the average Defence based Pokmon, to do so we will use the average HP stat (once again I emphasis the point, for the sake of finding versatility). The formula that would best be used to find the number of turns it takes to faint a Pokmon would be

In correlation with each other, each stat has weak, strong or normal effectiveness against each other, as shown in the table below. It is important to note that when there are dual types, the type defensive capabilities changes slightly depending on the secondary type, for example Ice damage would do 4 times the amount of damage to Dragon/Flying types, due to being super effective to both types. However it is important to not that dual types get STAB (same-type effectiveness) for primary and secondary type.

Note: The data was collected from testing out different moves to different Pokmon depending on their type, to assure accuracy.

Based on these findings, it is clear that Forretress is the most versatile Pokmon in terms of Defence. Conclusion/FindingsMost versatile Pokmon in terms of AttackIt is apparent that Excadrill excels as the most versatile Attack-based Pokmon, becoming a distressing sweeper that is able to wipe of most Pokmon from the map (especially from the samples taken). The Pokmon also has a very good move pool, giving it many different possible roles in battling, from setting up traps (or getting rid of them) to setting up and sweeping enemy Pokmon teams.

Most versatile Pokmon in terms of SPecial AttackIt is apparent that Magnezone excels as the most versatile Special Attack-based Pokmon. With stats and move pools like this, not only is Magnezone able to take out most enemys, but the Pokmon also has a large resistance to most stats and very dependable defensive stats.

Most versatile Pokmon in terms of DefenceIt is apparent that Forretress is the most versatile Defence-based tanked in the sample taken. Not only can this Pokmon clear traps (or make them), along with having high stats and resistances, the Pokmon has extremely high utility, able to wall of offensive Pokmon and change the tides of battle.

Most versatile Pokmon in terms of SPecial DefenceIt is apparent that from the gathered data from this assignment, in average the sample Pokmon can take around 5 hits, however it is apparent that from the data, one Pokmon can take a whopping 13 hits before being KOd by Special attack (5 hits more than Snorlax, the second one down), and that Pokmon is Blissey. Due to being a Normal Type, Blissey is only weak to one stat, is immune to Ghost Type moves and takes normal damage from every other type. However her phenomenal HP and excellent Special Defence allows this Pokmon to take hits from Special Attack-based Pokmon, and easily shrug it off.
