This week at Point Clare Public School we are celebrating Reconcil- iation Week. During this week we com- memorate two signifi- cant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo de- cision. On 3 June 1992 the High Court of Australia recognised that a group of Torres Strait Island- ers, led by Eddie Mabo, held ownership of Murray Island( Mer). In acknowl- edging the traditional rights of the Meriam people to their land, the court also held that native title existed for all Indigenous people. This week our students will be completing a range of tasks with Aboriginal perspectives embedded into each lesson. Next term the school’s Aboriginal Education team will be developing our own Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and will be reaching out for input from our Aboriginal community members. ASSET MANAGEMENT Our long awaited play- ground designs were in- stalled last Wednesday 24 June and they are abso- lutely outstanding. Our stu- dents’ response has been overwhelmingly positive and we even had one of the Kindergarten students claim that “this is the best day ever”! The installers were a very profession- al company from Sydney called “The Gardenmakers” and I think the photos be- low highlight what a fabu- lous addition to our school these designs are. The Hall COLA area is now not only a more engaging space for our younger students to play in but it is also able to be used to support curricu- lum delivery in Mathematics which is also very important. www.thegardenmakers.com.au

NSW SCHOOL CURRICULUM REVIEWThe NSW Government Response to the NSW Curriculum Review outlines an ambitious program for streamlining and strengthening what is taught in our schools over the next four years.

The reforms include:• building strong foundations for future learning by 2022 with new English and Mathematics syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2• more time for teaching by 2022 by reducing the hours teachers spend on extra-curricular topics and issues and compliance requirements• strengthening post school pathways by 2022 with new learning areas for Years 11 and 12 that clearly link learning to future employment and study options• a new curriculum from 2024 with new syllabuses focused on what is essential to know and do in early and middle years of schooling, and key learning areas in the senior years. SCHOOL SPORTS UPDATELast week our Brisbane Water Zone PSSA met to discuss the possibility of holding some Zone level events in 2020. The PSSA have voted to not hold a Zone Athletics Carnival in 2020 but will attempt to hold a Cross Country Carnival at some point next Semester. Our school is going to try to hold our own Athletics Carnival and we will communicate the details to our community early next Term. One of our stumbling blocks at the moment is that we cannot invite parents / community to the event due to the restrictions in place relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN (EMP)Every 6 months the school is required to hold a review of the school’s EMP and to hold a drill for an evacua-tion, lockdown or lockout event. This coming Wednesday we will be holding a rehearsal drill for a lockdown procedure. This will allow the school to identify aspects of our EMP that need to be strengthened or improved in some way.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS & END OF TERM REMINDERSTerm 2 concludes this Friday in what has been the most difficult year that many of us have ever experienced due to the pandemic. I would like to again take the opportunity to thank all of the students and their families for their efforts over the past few months. It has been incredible to see how committed our community is to providing our children with a quality education and how strongly you have all supported the school. It has been greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all of my staff for their continued efforts in the face of much adversity during this crisis. Our SASS staff are compassionate, caring and beyond diligent in their various customer service roles. To my teaching staff, a huge thank you. It is very difficult to convey how much respect I have for all of you and the efforts that you have made to make remote learning and the return to school based learning so successful. In my eyes; you are all magicians.

• School concludes for all students on Friday 3 July 2020. • The school is not open for the Share our Space program during the holidays due to important safety works being completed including tree lopping.• School resumes on Tuesday 21 July for 2020 for all students. Teachers return on Monday the 20 July to complete professional development activities.• Any security concerns over the school holidays should be phoned into the School Security Hotline - 1300 880 021

Thanks for a Great Term Point Clare - Bring on Term 3!

Well done and thank you to everyone who supported our wonderful students get the most out of their school experiences this term! Judging by the smiles I see at the end of each day, our kids have certainly enjoyed the return to school this term. A terrific reflection of the efforts put forward by our talented and dedicated school faculty each day.

Canteen volunteers will be pleased to know that they will be able to return to volunteering their assistance in the Canteen at the commencement of Term 3.

The team and I hope you all enjoy a fantastic, safe and healthy term holiday with your loved ones and look forward to seeing you all in Term 3 when we plan to resume most, if not all, of our activities.

NEXT GENERAL MEETING

7:30PM on Wednesday 12th August (Term 3)

P&C General meetings are held during school terms on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm. You do not need to be a member to attend.

Our meetings aim to run no longer than 2 hours and are the best way to gain insight into current and upcoming events at the school. Our group is centred on inclusivity. We value and respect the diverse experiences and perspectives our community have to offer.

You can join our association anytime. Membership is just $1 for the year. Forms can be obtained via the front office, at our meetings or via email.

As a community we have strength in our combined knowledge and experience. We are always looking for more volunteers to join our various P&C teams. It doesn’t have to be a regular commitment. Any time you can spare is valued.

At present these roles are still available:

- ASSISTANT BANKING COORDINATOR VOLUNTEERS ( X2 )

- COMMITTEE POSITIONS ( CANTEEN )
