Late last month it was my pleasure to welcomeonto our clergy sta the Rev. Dr. Ruth E. Cor-rell as our new Priest Associate. Her rst Sunday atPohick was on January 23rd. Ruth is a retired Epis-copal Priest who is continuing her pastoral ministryby serving as Chaplain at Greenspring RetirementHome in Springeld, a position she has held since2008. Last year, she additionally ministered as Priest-in-Charge at Olivet Episcopal Church during theirrectors three-month sabbatical. Since that time, shehas been a member o the Region VI clericus, whichconsists o the clergy serving in our surrounding geo-graphical area as dened by the diocese.

Prior to taking up her current position atGreenspring, Ruth ministered or 25 years as chaplainat numerous Episcopal schools in Maryland, Wash-ington D.C., exas, Hawaii, and New York. She re-

ceived her Doctorate o Education in Religious Edu-cation rom New York University in 1987, and alsoholds two Masters degrees and a Bachelors Degreein the eld o Education.

In her quarter-time position at Pohick, Ruth willbe assisting with Sunday and mid-week services, as

well as with pastoral calls and occasional teaching. Inaddition, she will provide clergy support or our Com-munity o Hope team and our Parish Nurse.

As I detailed at our December Parish Meeting, ourAssistant, the Rev. Lyn Youll Marshall, will be taking

blocks o time o beginning this year in order to trave

with her husband, Dr. Paul Marshall, as he continueshis important ministry o advocacy on behal o thepersecuted church. Lyn will continue her oversighto the Alpha program and Pohicks other ministrieso evangelism, as well as perorming regular liturgicaland pastoral duties, though at a reduced degree. It isespecially during those times when Lyn is travelingthat Ruth will step in to help pick up the slack. Ac-cordingly, the two will share the same oce space.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Ruth toPohick as she begins her ministry among us. In thecoming weeks and months, we are looking orward tobeing the beneciaries o her many years o experienceand study while we all seek to minister together onbehal o our Lord.

January was a busy month or the Vestry. Te Ves-

try held its annual dinner at the Fairax, had its an-nual retreat in Richmond, and met in a special ses-sion with the Rector to consider the hiring o a newPriest Associate. On January 11, the Vestry year began

with the annual dinner at the Fairax honoring theoutgoing Vestry members. One o the traditions othe dinner is the oering by the outgoing memberso insights and refections o their Vestry tenure. Eacho the outgoing members availed themselves o thisopportunity and provided many heartelt insights andsuggestions to consider during the Vestry retreat. Te

common thread in their remarks dealt with how muchthey learned during their tenure and how meaningulthe service upon the Vestry was to them. Tis annualopportunity to gather over a antastic dinner is spon-sored by Ms. Portia Richter and hosted by the Fairaxsta. Please remember to thank the outgoing Vestrymembers, Stew Remaly, Je Parker, Don Brownlee,Steve Harding, and Dana Hutson or their dedicationand service to the Parish.

At the Vestry meeting, Roberta Fede reported that

plate and pledge income was very good during De-cember. She advised that pledge income was very nearthe budgeted amount and plate income was above the

budgeted amount. Property expenses exceeded thebudget by a little over 8%. Te 2010 close out decit atthe time o the meeting was approximately $15,000

Te nal amount will be presented at the Februarymeeting o the Vestry, and it appears it will go down

Pending nal inormation, the Vestry deerred accept-ing the close out 2010 report. On January 14 and 15, the Vestry held its annual

retreat at the Roselyn Retreat Center, Richmond, Vir-ginia. Te rst evening began with a wonderul dinnerin the central dining room. Te evening was closed

with Compline in the beautiul new chapel. Breakastwas served at sunrise ollowed by Holy Eucharist, againin the new chapel, acing east out the foor to ceiling

windows into clear morning sky. Te ocus o the re-fections or the remainder o the day was upon how

the members o the Vestry can lead the way throughthe various Commissions to make Pohicks acilityeven more inviting to the congregation and visitors toPohick. Te refections were divided into two distinctsessions - rst attracting newcomers to Pohick andsecond removing barriers to church attendance. Teresults rom these two sessions will be integrated intothe appropriate Commissions and their committeesor considerations and implementation as appropriateDuring the aternoons closing session the selection o

this years Commission Chairs and Co-chairs was ac-complished.

prayingthe pSalmSOn Sunday, February 20, Dr. Marleen McCabe will run

a ve-week adult education class called Praying the Psalmsduring the Sunday school hour, 10:15 am - 11:05 am. Morethan any other book in the Bible, the Book o Psalms showsthe journey o the believer as one lled with doubt, disap-pointment, anger, hope, aith, trust, joy, and jubilation. Most

important, the Psalms give voice to the on-going and, attimes, turbulent relationship o the individual with God. othat end, the Psalms allow us to look into the mirror andexamine the personal journey toward surrender to Gods willin thought, word, and action. In this ve-week Bible study, participants will discuss Psalms o Lament, Imprecations(vindictive/cursing psalms), Doubt, Instruction, and PraisePsalms. At the end o the ve week study, participants willhave enriched both their understanding o the Book o Psalmsand their prayer lie. Class will meet in the Vestry House.

Tis monthly report is part o the Vestrys ongoing efortto inorm and update the Parish about the ongoing contro-

versies within Te Episcopal Church (EC) and the An-glican Communion. Tese controversies largely involve theblessing o same-gender unions, ordination o non-celibatehomosexuals, interpretation o Scripture, and breakdowno traditional boundary lines between Provinces.

wo very important events in the lie o our Dio-cese and Communion will have taken place by the timethis column appears. Our Diocesan Council will haveheld its annual meeting, and may well have taken actionon the issue o blessings or same-sex unions. A dratresolution readied or consideration thanked Bishop

Shannon and the rest o the diocesan leadership or thevery ruitul Listen and Be Heard sessions, whichwere held around the diocese in the all to give peoplein the pews a chance to talk, and listen to each other,on this issue. It also urged him to move orward withissuing guidelines on such blessings.

Last years Council had created a special commit-tee, called the R14s ask Force (ater the resolutionthat called on the bishop to set it up) to look someo the canonical, pastoral and other issues that mightcome into play i at some point blessings o same-sex

unions were authorized. Its report concluded the dioc-esan canons do not need to be amended to permit suchblessings. Tey could be authorized solely through thepastoral authority o the bishop.

Te ask Force drated proposed guidelines or theDiocese to ollow should the bishop authorize suchblessings, but let it to his discretion as to whether and when to make them public. However, its report didsay:

We were careul to ensure that our proposedguidelines do not exceed the canonical authority o the

bishop, or violated the canonical prerogatives and lim-its upon clergy and vestries. Tey all within the scopeo the bishops existing authority to provide pastoraldirection to his clergy, and within the meanings o theGeneral Convention Resolution C056 (passed in 2009)that said bishopsmay provide generous pastoral re-sponse to meet the needs o members o this church(on this matter) [emphasis added by the ask Force re-port.]

It added, While we frmly believe that the deci-sion whether to proceed with (blessing o) same-gen-

der unions alls within the authority o the bishop, wealso recommend that the bishop should provide a gen-

erous pastoral response to those people and clergy oour diocese who believe that same-general unions areill advised, or theologically and biblically unsound.

Note the way the ask Force repeated the phrasegenerous pastoral response and said, in essence, thiscuts both ways: I Bishop Shannon chooses to providea generous pastoral response to those wanting same-sex blessings, he should also provide a generous pasto-ral response to those opposed to them.

wo drat resolutions originally oered dieringperspectives on the ongoing property litigation. One

urged a negotiated settlement, while the other urgedthe bishop to continue eorts to preserve the claim onthe property by all available means.

Ater the two resolutions were submitted, the back-ers agreed on substitute language in which the councilurged members o the diocese corporately and indi- vidually, to pray regularly or Gods guidance or theresolution o the property issues in the Diocese that arepresently the subject o litigation.

Our clergy and council delegates can provide ad-ditional details as to the fnal Council action, and the

immediate impact, i any it may have on us at Pohick.* * *

A ew days ater our Diocesan Council was sched-uled to meet, the Primates o the Anglican Commu-nion were scheduled to gather in Dublin or fve days.

Te Primates o the Anglican Communion arethe chie archbishops or bishops o its 38 member prov-inces. In the case o Te Episcopal Church, PresidingBishop Katharine Jeerts Schori is our primate. Someprovinces use other terms or historical reasons, such asmetropolitan or primus. Te Archbishop o Canterbury

is recognized as the primus inter pares, or frst amongequals, o the college o Primates, and attendance at aPrimates Meeting is by invitation rom him.

Some primates rom the Global South, who op-pose moves in Te Episcopal Church and Church oCanada to ordain non-celibate gays and lesbians, andbless same-sex unions, said they would boycott themeeting i primates rom those provinces attended. Buta bishop rom one o those Global South provinces

the Province o Nigeria, wrote a letter urging them toattend. Citing church councils going back to 49 AD,

Bishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon said those councils werecalled precisely because people disagreed, and partici-pation did not necessarily mean agreement with theol-ogy or politics o other participants. Tere is a hugedesire among ordinary members o the Church oNigeria or the Communion to stay together, he said.

In other recent developments: Te frst three ormer bishops o the Church o

England were ordained as Roman Catholic priests inthe new ordinate established by Pope Benedict XVIIto provide a home or English clergy who disagreed

with moves in the Church o England to ordain wom-en as priests and bishops. wo men elected as in Te Episcopal Church

have received the necessary approval o diocesan bish-ops and standing committees church-wide, and will beconsecrated as bishops. Te elections o the Revs. DanMartins as bishop o Springfeld (Ill.) and MichaelMilliken as o bishop o Western Kansas were notableor two dierent reasons.

Te Rev. Martins was a priest in the Diocese o SanJoaquin, Caliornia as its bishop attempted to separate

it rom Te Episcopal Church. While clearly a theo-logical conservative, the Rev. Martins has never openlyadvocated breaking with Te Episcopal Church. De-spite some initial grumblings, no serious opposition tohis consecration ever developed, and his receiving thenecessary consents without much controversy was seenby some as deliberate eort to show there is room ordiversity o thought in the College o Bishops.

Te Rev. Millikens election was controversial ora dierent reason. He is Rector o a parish Hutchin-son, Kansas, and in an unusual arrangement, does not

intend to leave that post while serving as bishop. Teconsents rom the wider church in eect endorse that.

It is important to remember that despite all these controversies, thework o the Church - globally, nationally, and locally - goes on.In recent months, 20 bags o backpacks and school supplies wereprovided to the Lorton Community Action Center, and more than200 pounds o ood were contributed to LCAC. Te ninth missiongroup rom Pohick journeyed to New Orleans in mid-October. Asthe Rector has said, we will continue to go back as long as we areable and as long as the need to continues to be so great. Te Carpen-ter rom Nazareth, we eel, would not have it any other way.

Update on Issues in the Anglican Communion, continued from page 6 treaSurerSreport

    Roberta Fede, Treasurer

Tis is an update ollowing the annual meeting

in December. As o November 30, Pohick had abudget defcit o $89,865, and it appeared that theyear would end with a substantial defcit.

December was a good month. Pledges reached99.6% o the goal, and plate income exceeded bud-get estimates. All o this and new sidewalks too!Tanks to all parishioners or their generosity incovering the needs o Pohick Church. Pohick isortunate to have a very dedicated congregationwho love and support the

church and its ministries.Te sale o 16 cem-

etery plots to parishio-ners brought the cemeterybudget rom a projecteddefcit to a proft. All in all,the year-end defcit wasreduced to $15,000. TeChurch cannot sustainsuch defcits every year,

but or 2010, Pohick benefted rom a very gener-ous year-end contribution that essentially canceledthe defcit. Te year 20ll starts with a positive bal-ance.

So ar or 2011, the Church has received 154pledges totaling $540,839. Tis number exceedsthe 2010 pledge total, and a ew more pledges areexpected. Te Finance Committee and the Vestryvoted or an essentially balanced budget or 2011.

Tanks to dedicated Finance Committee mem-bers Jim Bartholomew, Ken Evans, Peter Kind, PaulPeterson, Bill Poad, Edwardene Pitcock, and MikeZane or the many hours they spent in Decemberdiscussing and putting together the budget. Teycontinued or several meetings until the work wasdone, and they reached a general consensus on abudget to recommend or Vestry approval. Alsothanks to Mike Morgan, the new Financial Ad-ministrator, who advised the Committee and gotup to speed very quickly on a quite complex bud-get.

As a part o its mission, the Lorton Community Ac-tion Center (LCAC) provides groceries to amilies inneed. Here is a true story o a can o corn and the im-pact it had on one amily. Please know that individualeorts can really matter to amilies in the community

    with young children.

Te ravels of One Can of Corn Across Te CountyIt is dinnertime in a home in Lorton, part o southern

Fairax County. Tree small children are giggling at theantics o the baby, while they scoop up spoons o meat, macaroni, and corn. Since they dont always have veg-etables at their meal, the oldest child states she likes thecorn best. She does not have a clue how the corn came to

be in her home; but her mother standing at the counterknows. She received it the day beore in a bag o grocer-ies she was handed at her weekly visit to the ood pan-try at the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC).

Without this weekly assistance, tonights corn would notbe served, and neither would a number o other pantryessentials that make it to her table rom week to week.

Just how this corn came to this amily is a story in-volving a cast o many community players.

A typical community grocery store manager identi-fed unsold ood goods or contribution to LCAC.

A retired gentleman rom the community receives acase o corn along with baked goods, some rozen meat, and perhaps some resh vegetables rom the store man-ager.

He loads these several boxes in his car and drives oto the LCAC house located on the rise behind Lortonpublic library, where he meets...

wo other men arriving with their donations romother stores.

Another volunteer rom the community carries theboxes rom the receiving room to the basement where...

A local mother, having some time between shut-tling her children to and rom activities, is sorting thedays collections o donations into some 30 bins o simi-lar ood items.

She is joined by a business proessional who hasstopped by between business calls to assemble 20 - 30 abags or distribution the ollowing morning.

On a good day, yet another volunteer will stop byon the way home rom work and help carry the assem-bled bags, each one including a can o corn, back upstairs

where they will be distributed the next day.

Early the next morning, several volunteers arriveat the LCAC ood pantry to prepare the supplementalgrocery packages by adding meat, produce, cereal, andbakery products to the a bag (the can o corn included)rom downstairs.

Tese volunteers or additional volunteers will laterissue this ood to a scheduled list o prescreened ami-lies who arrived at LCAC on their appointed day o the

week. Each allocation is aithully recorded as it passeout the door.

Te point o this story o course is that it has taken alot o helping hands and good will to move that can ocorn rom the supermarket to the amily in need. In thisstory, at least ten women and men contributed their timeon just one day to collect, sort, and distribute one weeklypackage that included the corn.

Te rest o the story is that there are barely enoughvolunteers to make this happen. Tis process goes on ev-ery work day, every week, throughout the year. What hap-pens i a volunteer has an unscheduled amily emergencyor any o these volunteers take vacation time, move romthe area, or just plain wear out? Who is there to replacethem? Who is there to sustain this ood chain?

I those who have the heart and the schedule wouldlike more inormation about volunteering at LCACplease contact Kathleen Noone at lcacvolunteer@msncom. She would be very happy to speak with all those

interested.Oh, by the way, still not convinced? Te need in the

community is growing as todays economic stresses con-tinue. Tere are more amilies who need help with serv-ing that can o corn or dinner tonight!

As a reminder, Pohick collects non-perishable ooditems the frst Sunday o every month as a part o thealms giving. Please bring donations to the service andplace them in the basket in the back o the Church. Teushers will bring the basket orward to be blessed. Fooditems can also be brought at other times. Just place them

in or around the red ood box in the Common RoomTe items that are identifed as being most needed in-clude: boxed cereal, canned ruit and vegetables, cannedsoup, canned pasta sauce and pasta, canned tuna, andbrown rice.

During the Tanksgiving and Christmas season, Po-hick contributed over 6,000 pounds o ood, $2,665 inood git cards, and an additional $235 in checks romparishioners. LCAC currently has 347 amilies who areregistered to receive ood aid. Tose amilies included707 adults and 601 children.
