From Your Board of DirectorsBy FranK Milano

August 1st starts the new year for your Board of Directors. This year we welcome three new members, two who have previously served on the Board, Mike Elbert and Bill Weimer and one who is a first time Board member Collette Ong.

Please take the opportunity to talk to the new as well as returning Board members. Share your thoughts and expectations. We all represent you and are interested in how you think things are going and how we might improve upon what is being done.

As reported at the annual meeting, the year so far is going well both budget wise and the amount of increased participation in our amenities. The Board, working with our management team, will continue to monitor the budget. The goal, as always, is to control expenses and work on increasing our revenue stream.

There are a few good summer days and plenty of fall days remaining for all to take advantage of our beach area, pool, tennis courts and golf course. The Clubhouse and Fitness Center are year round amenities but do seem more enjoyable when not having to navigate through snow and ice to use them. We encourage all to partake of what PFCCA has to offer.

On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank our members for their continued support of our efforts to maintain our Community as one of the finest in the Poconos.

Mahjong LadiesThe Friday Mahjong group meets at 1:00pm in the Fitness Center Community Room. Seated Above: Jutta Moser, Ro Carlson, Bea Allam, and Lydia Carnesalle. Standing: Jackie Kooyenga, Isobel Nemetz, A.J. Oravec, Denise Riggi, Hedy Wilder, and Patty Horowitz.

Thoughts from the ManagerBy DaVe tiMKo

Summer is quickly flying by – AGAIN!! Soon we will be watching the leaves change colors and experiencing the cooler temperatures. Speaking of change, we actually had an election this year for the three open Board of Directors positions. I would like to thank all five of the candidates for choosing to run for the positions. I would like to congratulate Collette Houston-Ong, Mike Elbert, and Bill Weimer on being elected by their fellow members to serve their respective three year terms. I trust the next three years will be a rewarding experience for them.

Although the annual meeting and elections are over, we will continue with the Board of Directors and Management update letters that were started this year. This, along with the Community Update and Coffee break were welcomed additions to our offerings this year. These are positive tools in keeping the lines of communication open between the members, the Board of Directors and the staff and management.

Looking ahead, the staff and management will be working with the Board of Directors, along with the Finance committee’s review, in preparing and presenting the 2014 budget for Pocono Farms. Drafting and presenting the budget is not always an easy task, but one that is carefully and meticulously put together. We will continue to look at historical data, current trends in revenue and expenses, and future projections in the preparation, review, presentation and subsequent acceptance and posting of the 2014 budget.

Crime Watch Activity ReportBY ED AALBUE • JULY 2013

The summer of 2013 is half over. The 4th of July celebration was a success with many of our community members, family and friends getting out to enjoy the festivities at the clubhouse. The weekend came to an end with a wonderful fireworks display .This month we added two new patrols to our group. Welcome back to Joe Ladore who returned after a short break and to Peter and Rosita Cyz who are new drivers. This brings our patrols up to 19 patrols. During the month we patrolled the community for 102 hours. One thing that was noticed by all drivers is that there still are large quantities of homes that do not have the new address posted on the home or at the end of the driveway. Please do this ASAP. If a problem happens at your home where you need an ambulance or the fire company to respond, you could be in trouble. It could be a life or death situation.

DO YOU EVER GET THOSE ANNOYING PHONE CALLS WITH NO ONE ON THE OTHER END? This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a real sales person to call back and get someone at home. What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call, and it kicks your number out of their system: Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer!

Letter to the EditorTo My Fellow Homeowners,

Well, we had our July meeting. We had 138 homeowners present out of 1600 homeowners. That is not even 10%. But the meeting was a good one. I know I sound like a broken record, but we have to have better attendance at our board meetings and at our July meetings. Here is another item which affects all of us. This is our community and we should take pride in it. People are using our community as a dumping ground for anything from garbage to furniture dumping. If you see anyone doing this, report it to our community office. This affects all of us and we must do our part to correct this matter.

Thank you all for listening to me. Hugh Doran

Getting to Know YouBy Marianne stePhen

Meet Chris Zimmermann

First of all, Chris is a born story teller so it has been difficult for me to determine which stories get in this article and which ones I have to leave out.

Chris was born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC. There were seven children, three boys and four girls, and they all lived in a 4-room railroad apartment. They were poor but did not realize it. She remembers watching Howdy Doody on a small black and white TV in the parlor and one of her sisters lighting a match and accidently setting the sofa on fire. Bathtime was in a half size bathtub that required a bit of maneuvering and a guard to keep the others out of the room. These are fond memories for Chris as she recounts many stories with a smile on her face. Chris’s dad was a toymaker and that meant dolls for Chris and her sisters. Unlike her sisters, Chris was a tomboy and secretly wished for a football rather than dolls.

She was shaped by the neighborhood and she became a street kid along with all the others in the neighborhood. It was a tough neighborhood and everyone was involved in petty stuff. Chris has great stories about living there at that time and it would be worthwhile for you to ask her about it.

When she was twelve, the family made the “big move” and rented a 6-room apartment four blocks away on 44th Street. Something far more important than the move helped to change her life and which would have a life-long effect on her. She and two of her friends conspired to apply for sleep away camp that was offered on the ability to pay so they knew they would be able to go. As the three giggled, they plotted how they would attend camp and cause a little trouble. Smartly, the camp separated the girls and Chris fell in love with the camp experience. In addition to learning outdoor skills such as knot tying and how to build fires, Chris recalls learning simple indoor things such as how to set a table. As she describes it, camp turned her tough little head around and speculates what her life would be without that experience.

Chris became a counselor and spent her summers there from the time she was twelve until she finally felt she had to give it up at age 22 (reluctantly I might add). There was much diversity in that camp and it all worked and she feels it is a good role model.

Chris attended Julia Richmond High School that was an all girls’ school. Her other siblings attended regular high school but her mother insisted that Chris go to that school, in spite of the long commute across the city and up 20 blocks. After high school, she was supposed to give up the camp and get a job. She determined that she did not want to spend her working days inside after six months as a typist in a very conservative company where she had to wear gloves. After that, she managed to get little jobs in the winter so that she could easily walk away each year when she went back to be a counselor at camp. At one point, she and her girlfriend went to a recruiting office to sign up for the service but the recruiter called their mothers before they even got home and all hell broke loose.

That same year, her family moved to New Jersey and it was about the same time that Chris determined that she really did need to “get real” and contribute more to the household so she gave up her camp experience although she would return one more time later for a partial summer as a married woman with a child in tow to help the director.

It was about the same time that a friend introduced her to Peter Zimmermann who was home on leave from the service. Chris said it was a wonderful evening and they spent the whole night talking. Her friend asked her the next day to see what she thought and Chris said, “I could marry someone like that.” Peter was stationed on the West Coast and their relationship continued by mail until he came home. She had been casually seeing a boy called Tom prior to meeting Peter and he was not happy with the return of Peter. Interestingly, he eventually married Peter’s sister so he became a brother-in-law. Peter always speculated that it was because he wanted to be near Chris. Peter and Chris were married in 1966.

Chris has two sons and five grandchildren ranging in age from 10 to 18 who live in New Jersey and Ohio.

Peter and Chris bought property in Pocono Farms in 1971 but she says neither one of them could recollect how they happened to end up in Pocono Farms. As she recalls, there were very few homes and red shale on the roads. It was truly the boondocks.

Peter worked for Chemical Bank, which changed names many times over the years, but he was with the same bank for most of his working life. At age 40, Peter made the courageous decision to walk away from the security he had with the bank and move to Colorado. Equally

courageously, Chris agreed and they moved with their two young sons. They had vacationed in Colorado and both of them fell in love with the area. After a few years in Colorado, they made the decision to move back east. Peter’s work was requiring more travel and they missed family and the sharing of both the good and bad times. In making the decision to move back, they made an agreement that they would build on their lot in Pocono Farms so that they would have an escape place in the country, as Peter was going back to his old company and working in NYC.

Chris had been taking college classes with an emphasis on accounting while she was in Colorado and was able to start her own business providing accounting services to small businesses and continued that practice when she moved back east. These were skills she was later to use here in Pocono Farms.

Chris was always active in whatever community she belonged to and one of her proud accomplishments was co-chairing the bicentennial celebration in 1976 for the town of Guttenberg.

Peter and Chris finished their home in Pocono Farms in 1987 and came up every weekend after that and Chris and the boys spent the entire summer here. In 1995, they became full time residents. Peter continued to commute to the city for several more years telling Chris that having an hour a day to sit on the deck was worth the commute. Peter loved to garden and Chris worked right along with him and learned to love it as well and it continues to be a passion for her.

Life in Pocono Farms was different in the early days when Chris started coming here, as we did not have the luxury of a management team running the community. Chris became very involved both as a Board member and participating in many committees with much of her time spent on the finance committee. There were many issues to be addressed and Chris was in the center of many of these debates to try to move the community forward. Chris is thrilled with how the community has

Page 5: Pocono Farms Weathervane

...continued

grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade and with professionalism of our Management Team.

One of Chris’s hobbies was photography and she not only took still pictures but made videos using Pocono Farms friends in silly skits. She said, at first, folks were shy but eventually became camera hogs and loved participating. She prepared a video of photographs for Pocono Farms’ 45th Anniversary that was shown during the evening and contained pictures of many of our early residents. Thanks Chris for that effort as everyone attending that event enjoyed the reminiscing.

About 15 years ago, Chris and Peter visited the Breschers from Pocono Farms in Myrtle Beach during the winter and Chris realized that wintering there would be kinder to her as she has suffered from lung disease since she was a child and she has been spending time there almost every winter since. In addition to visiting and golfing with Pocono Farms friends down there, she has developed a group of young friends that she enjoys hanging out with.

Sadly, Peter passed away in 2006 after a two-year battle with cancer, which is a great loss for Chris, of course, but also for our community. I would like to share a personal story about Peter. Our grandson was born in the month of March in 2003 and my daughter and son-in-law were here every weekend in the summer. We would go to the club on Friday nights and Ryan would be in a stroller with a blanket over it to keep the light out and noise down as he was falling asleep. Peter would always stop by to say hello to Ryan and he would pick up the blanket and he and Ryan would share huge smiles. If Ryan fussed and sometimes without the fuss, Peter would push Ryan around the club in the stroller or carry him in his arms. There will always be a special place in the Stephen/Boehmer hearts for Peter.

After Peter died, Chris made the decision to rent her home here and moved to Ohio near where one of her sons lived. She spent three years there and enjoyed living on the water. She made good friends and loved the lifestyle including belonging to a yacht club and playing golf. Something, however, keeps drawing her back east and last year she moved back here to Pocono Farms. She now spends her time doing projects both inside and outside of her home sometimes to the chagrin of her son who feels she does too much. Chris has a box in our community garden and is enjoying tending to it.

Chris enjoys exploring the history of both her and Peter’s family and has signed up for a genealogy course in the fall. Her parents came from Italian islands, which

are now a part of Croatia although they did not meet until they immigrated here. Both her parents came through Ellis Island. Peter’s family is German but lived in Romania and he came here when he was ten. His mother used to buy comic books for him that she could ill afford in order to help him learn English. Chris recalls stories from her mother-in-law including being given a banana when she first arrived and, never having seen a banana, ate it with the skin on and never ate another banana for the rest of her life. The story of Peter’s life in Romania is fascinating and another story worth asking Chris about. His father was a farmer drawn into the Romanian army and was captured and spent years in prison when Peter was just five years old. Peter came to America with his mother but I am happy to report that his father was eventually able to join them.

It is the peacefulness of the Farms and the good people that live here that Chris loves. She recently had surgery on her neck and marvels at the kindness that was offered to her during her recuperation time. She feels that this is what makes Pocono Farms a real community, as people are there to help you during the tough times. Chris loves where Pocono Farms has come and hopes the next generation of residents appreciates our community, gets involved and continues to move our community forward.

Local Resident A Published AuthorLocal Pocono Farms resident, Joan Enering, has written a book entitled “The Innovative Road to Greater Success in Job Hunting and Changing Careers”, which has been published by Publish America.

Joan and her family have been residents of the Poconos for the past 19 years. Joan felt there was a strong need for the public for information about this subject, and with 30 years experience, has put together an in-depth view of how to find a job.

This book presents concise information on how to begin a search for a job, or even change careers. It also explains how to write a cover letter, resume, and follow-up note after an interview.

Secrets of the waiting room are explored, and readers are made aware of some behaviors that might enhance or diminish their chances of receiving a job offer.

Photos of appropriate and inappropriate attire are provided to enhance the readers’ understanding of how to present themselves in an interview.

This book is a must have for anyone venturing into the work force for the first time, as well as for the seasoned job seeker.

Books can be purchased online at: Publish.America.com.

edward W. “Ted” Johnson, 87, died Thursday morning, June 27, 2013. He was the husband of Dolores L. (Williams) Johnson, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. Ted was Pocono Farms’ first golf professional. He and his wife built a home here in 1972 and have lived here ever since. In recent years Ted could be seen playing the course with some regularity with his son Andrew. It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of one of Pocono Farms truly great pioneers.

the foLLowing articLe was first printed in the May 1972 edition of our coMMunity newspaper:

Let us introduce you to Ted Johnson. Ted is our professional golfer and has the official title of Golf Director at Pocono Farms Country Club.

A native of Philadelphia, Ted has spent most of his career as a jet fighter with the United States Air Force. A veteran with more than 100 combat missions, flying F-84 Thunderjets in Korea, Ted retired from active duty in 1967 having by then attained the rank of Major.

Ted is a skilled and active participant in many sports but his first love is golf. His golfing activities go back 25 years beginning with an extensive career as an amateur while in the military. He participated in most o the Air Force tournaments as well as the British, Italian and Portuguese championships. He currently holds the course record here at Pocono Farms Country Club with a 68. Ted came to us three seasons ago from Whitemarsh Valley Country Club where he was associated with Sam Penecale.

Ted’s winter activities are centered around the Big Boulder Ski rea where he supervises the Ski School.

Ted, his wife Dolores, and their three children: Andy, Judy and Angie, currently live in South Sterling, PA., but construction on their new home on Panter Road here at the Farms is well advanced and they expect to move in this summer.

Now hard at work planning a full schedule of golf activities, Ted expects the coming season to be the best and most active yet at Pocono Farms. You’ll find him and Dolores at the Pro Shop most anytime now that the new season is underway.

As the 2013 swim team season comes to a close I would to thank all the members the Pocono Farms community for giving the children of our team an opportunity to be a part of this wonderful program! The amount of support we received from the parents of the swimmers, The General Manager, Board of Directors, and members of the community as a whole was overwhelming this year! We had an amazing, 108 total swimmers from the ages of 5 years old to 18 years old who participated on the team. Our final record was 3-2, with impressive wins over Arrowhead, Buckhill and The Hideout.

One of the Highlights of this season was our annual Laps for Cancer. Our Laps for Cancer event was started in the memory of all members of the Pocono Farms community who have lost their battle with cancer. Swimmers of the team swim laps and various sponsors donated money on their behalf. This event was first motived by the loss of our beloved Marylou, a dedicated employee of the pool for years. Another notable element of this year’s event was that the previous record of total laps swum, was broken by Patrick La Bella, who swam 450 laps. Since we started this event the swim team has donated over $10,000 to the Monroe County Hospice.

The Swim team Banquet was held on Aug 2nd. The banquet consists of an award ceremony then a party at the pool. We had 250 people attend this event. Every swimmer is awarded a participation trophy and there are other awards we give to various swimmers. The most desired and the greatest honor that can be given to any swimmer on our team is the Galen Award. This award is in memory of Galen Happeney who was once a member of the team, but unfortunately passed away tragically. The winner of this year’s Galen award was Holly Storck. Holly has been on our team for over 10 years and is one of the hardest working swimmers the team has ever seen.

Three long time members of the team who will not be eligible next year to swim on the team are Lydia Esposito, Vinelys Mendez and Louis Shaefer. All three are also current Lifeguards who work at the pool and all three will be attending college in the fall. We wish all three and any other former members of the team the best in the future.

This season the coaches of the team were Head Coach Paul McCrone, assistant coaches Jen Pero and Louis Schafer, with Deb Pero, Mikey Schafer and Holly Storck serving as volunteer coaches. Special thanks to parent liaison Donnalee Serrano who was extremely dedicated to every aspect of the team. Without her efforts the swimmers would not receive the same positive experiences that were provided throughout season. On behalf of the coaching staff I’d like to once again thank everyone especially all of the swimmers for all their hard work this season!
