THE ULMSTEAD Weathervane Editor: Stephanie Collier Asst. Editor: Joss Blumberg 410-757-2456 [email protected] April 1, 2018 www.ulmstead.org From the President So maybe there is something to Punxsutawney Phil… As I look out the window and see the last vestiges of our “First Day of Spring” snow storm melt away, I’m sure Spring really is around the corner. And you know Spring is coming when Slip Selection occurs. Annual Slip Selection occurred March 10 th and it was clear to those gathered at the barn that all were ready to begin boat preparations and get them in the water. Please be vigilant around the neighborhood and Dock 1 as boats on trailers make their way to the boat ramp. And speaking of trailers… a reminder to all residents that per Article VII Section 1.i of Ulmstead Bylaws, “Boats, trailers, campers and other such items shall be stored in garages or may be stored on residential lots in back of the residence and to the degree possible, consistent with the topography of the lot, not generally to be visible from the street.” Driveways are not appropriate storage areas. Let’s keep Ulmstead beautiful! As I see more and more people emerge from their winter hibernation, neighbors are out and about walking, jogging, dog-walking and cycling. I’ve noticed a couple of areas that tend to accumulate trash (Bayberry/Lynch fork and the intersection of Magothy View and Placid Ct.). Please lend a hand and pick up any trash you may see in these areas and any others to ensure our scenic neighborhood remains the gem of Broadneck Peninsula. Ulmstead Bylaws. Our Bylaws were last amended in 1994! One of the reasons it’s so difficult to amend is that to vote on Bylaws changes, the presence, in person or by proxy, of a majority of members having voting rights constitutes a quorum (in other words, >50% of the community). It’s no easy task to get half the community together for such changes. Stephen Blumberg has generously offered to lead a Bylaws Committee chartered to review the current Bylaws and suggest needed amendments. This effort will benefit all Ulmsteaders, but so far, very few brave souls have stepped forward to work with Stephen. The more input we have into the Committee, the better will be the outcome. So, if you are interested, please reach out to Stephen! (sblumberg[at]cdc.gov) Another worthwhile committee to consider is the Beach Scenic Committee. The park bulkhead project should begin this fall and the park grounds may be chewed up by heavy equipment. Following the project, we would like to have a plan in place to restore and beautify the park. This is your opportunity

From the President So maybe there is something to Punxsutawney Phil… As I look out the window and see the last vestiges of our “First Day of Spring” snow storm melt away, I’m sure Spring really is around the corner. And you know Spring is coming when Slip Selection occurs. Annual Slip Selection occurred March 10th and it was clear to those gathered at the barn that all were ready to begin boat preparations and get them in the water. to shape one of the hallmark properties of Ulmstead Estates. We will need ideas on ground cover, play equipment, benches and picnic tables at the very least. Just drop me an email if you are interested in leading this effort, as it’s a great opportunity to take the Beach Park to the next level. And don’t forget about the Volunteer Postings Below. We really do count on volunteers for so many functions and activities that we count on in Ulmstead. As the days continue to get longer and the temperatures get warmer, I look forward to seeing everyone out and about in Ulmstead. Stay safe and remember to keep your speed down driving around the neighborhood… our kids are just as anxious to get outside and will be on bikes, skateboards and scooters! UCI DEPARTMENTS AND ACTIVITIES

NAUTICAL

Despite chilly temperatures, an enthusiastic group of volunteers showed up early Saturday morning to prepare the docks for the upcoming boating season. Ice eaters were removed, washed and stored for next winter. The ice machine is up and running and the water systems are on at all docks. This was all accomplished in a little more than an hour, thanks to the large turnout of our fellow boaters. I feel very fortunate that again my request for help has been answered by many eager volunteers. Thanks again to those who helped out Saturday morning. 2018 promises to be an exciting year around the Ulmstead docks. Preparations continue for the replacement of Dock 1. Contracts for pier construction, electrical and plumbing have been signed. Permits for pier construction are still pending, but preliminary electrical work, which includes a new meter, disconnect box, and coordination with BGE to upgrade service to 200 amps, has already begun. Shortly, the new electrical service will be connected to the breaker box on the pier. This will require boring and running new cable under the parking lot. Please use caution while any work is being performed at the dock. There has been interest in construction of small boat/kayak racks. Contact Nautical if you are willing to assist in planning this project. Planning is underway for this year’s July 3rd Dock Party. The Dock Party is hosted by the Nautical Department but is open to all UCI members. Denise Zucco is again organizing one of Ulmstead’s most enjoyable events. The preparations and cleanup for the party are significant. If you are willing to help, please contact her. The 2018 slip assignments, along with the updated Nautical Department Rules are now posted on the Ulmstead website. The slip assignments also show available slips. If you missed slip selection, you may still obtain a boat slip by contacting the Nautical Department. All small boats/kayaks stored on UCI property and trailers using the boat ramp are required to display current (2018) Nautical stickers. There is still time to be placed on the Slip Selection Priority List without cost. All requests must be in writing/email to the Nautical Department Manager. To obtain a boat slip, stickers or any other questions/issues contact the Nautical Department at [email protected]. Please remember winter storage of trailer boats on parking lots at Docks 1&2 ends March 31st. Thank you and have a safe and enjoyable boating season. Bill Zichos

ULMSTEAD TENNIS CLUB It is time to get out the tennis and pickleball rackets, put on the frilly skirts, and head to the courts for another year! There will be many exciting things happening this season: • We have contracted with American Tennis Courts to have 4 newly resurfaced courts (work is

expected to begin by May). • A new storage shed has been purchased. • Like last year, Kelly Gargagliano will spearhead the Junior Tennis Camp (dates to be determined). • We have replaced some burnt-out lights.

Tennis fees are $150 and are due on April 22. All checks should be made payable to UCI. Please mail checks to:

Kaye Witting 659 Mallard Court Arnold, MD 21012

SPRING CLEANING – (APRIL 8, 2-4PM) We will have a community get together to have the courts ready for the tennis season. We plan to install the windscreens, and spruce things up (pull out weeds, pick up debris, etc.). There will be snacks! Your help is greatly appreciated. If you would like to help, kindly email me at [email protected].

SOCIAL Ladies Wine & Cheese Food Drive Results Thank you to everyone who donated food and toiletries at our annual food drive. We collected over 160 items! We had many generous donations again this year, including a box of shampoo and many donations dropped off at the collection box by my mailbox. SPAN (Serving People Across Neighborhoods) located on Benfield Road in Severna Park sent us a thank you letter. Great job ladies. Michelle Mahan Children’s Annual Spring & Fall Party Coordinator/s Needed We still need one or two volunteers to hold the May and October parties. In past years, there were two coordinators: one for each party. The parties are typically an hour and half to two hours long on a Sunday at the barn or the barn field. Please let me know if you are interested in being the coordinator for one or both parties. Email me at [email protected] if interested. The Guys Get Together Please join Ulmstead gentlemen for a friendly social gathering at O’Loughlins on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5pm. Boy Scouts Would you like to go camping, learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun? Our troop meets every Thursday evening at 7 PM at the Ulmstead Barn and goes camping one weekend every month. Come check us out! Also, we are still collecting worn out flags for a patriotic flag retirement ceremony. You can join even if you were never a Cub Scout. Contact Mike Allen for information at 410-919-8487.
