AssembledAfter identifying our own strenghts, the type of work we would want to do and the type of design partner we would be looking for, I ended up working in a group of 3, with Kate Fenton and Ross Stanton. After discussing each of our strenghts and the direction we would like to go with this project, we came to a conclusion that we were all looking to explore a brief with an opened. Although we all had our own interests within graphic design, we all wanted to work on something different therefore as a group, decided to choose a brief that would allow it to drive the solution.

01Final Solution;A small booklet aimed to promote and inform potential travellers to consider using P&O Ferries as their main form of transport to travel to Europe.

01

We wanted a research lead design practice so decided to choose the P&O ferries brief as none of us knew much about it. Although the brief did seem quite vague, there were definitely areas that we wanted to focus on with the brief.

02 BriefConceptIdeas

ConceptTo encourage more people to use P&O Ferries as their main source of transport to Europe by promoting and informing them about the benefits and the ease of travelling with P&O through the delivery of a print based booklet.

Target AudienceYoung families who own cars and travel or are thinking about travelling to Europe.

IdeaWe wanted to pursue the idea of ‘Exploring Europe with your car’ by promoting the benefits of this in conjunction with the benefits of using P&O as this is one of the main selling points of it. Most people who know about P&O often have a negative impression of it, therefore we wanted our design to approach our target audience - the print based booklet was the most effective format for this.

03 Research

Primary ResearchAs we wanted our design practice to be research based, we wanted to gather first hand research and experience of P&O Ferries. From traveling on it, we got a much clearer understanding of the benefits, experience and idea of what we could focus our ideas on. During our trip, we interviewed about 60 people from passengers to crew members, asking them about their experience, things’s they liked, their reasons for traveling by P&O etc. From this we got much clearer idea on our design direction and what approach we were going to take.

Secondary ResearchAswell as our primary research, we collected a suffiecient amount of secondary research, looking into a range of resources related to our brief. We were able to identify our design direction and problem to tackle from our primary research, but our secondary research played a major part towards determining the content and what we would communicate to our audience.

04 Practical Development

Due to us focusing on the research for the first week and identifying the main concept that would work from, our development went reasonably well. We had a clear idea of what we wanted to achieve as soon as we got our concept and ideas together and delegated specific roles for each person to be responsible for. As we were working as a group of 3, we had daily reviews on each person’s progress to ensure that our work is consistent throughout.

We shared responsibilities for most of the major decisions we had to make towards our design direction, but worked quite independently within the group to increase effieciency. Throughout the project, one of my responsibilities was to monitor our time and project management, with this I constructed weekly action plans and targets, which would be emailed out to Ross & Kate. My main role with the practical development towards the final solution was on the map design which also

acted as the cover of the booklet. I was confident with the use of digital software, had experience with drawing maps before and that it offered the opportunity of creating something that is image based; combining layout and typography. This left Ross with the main responsibility of the spreads designs and Kate with the icons and rest of the imagery needed for the map and editorial side of things.
