Sharing Art TogetherEach summer South Coast Artists strive to bring you the best art experience in New England. This summer, the17th annual Open Studio Tour continues to foster excellence in the arts, even though we’re fully aware of the challenges that the coronavirus pandemic has brought to our communities.

Fully aware of our shared responsibility, SCA is confident that each artist is ready to make this an unforgettable journey for you and your family, being mindful that we’ve created a safe art environment that is careful and considerate of your needs.

This summer we’ve also changed the dates and pushed the tour ahead one month. That means you can visit artists at their studios on the two weekends of August 15-16 and September 19-20. This change allows us more time to share an art adventure that protects our visitors while adhering to regulations from the governors of both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Inside this brochure you will find an informational graphic that illustrates what we expect from artists and visitors alike, one that respects social distance needs and cleanliness requirements.

For the latest information regarding the tour, please check the SCA mobile app, which can be downloaded on your smartphone or tablet. This Free app is available through the Apple Store or Google Play. Search for South Coast Artists. We’re confident that this added feature will keep you up-to-date on any changes, which will enhance your experience this summer. FIRST PLACE Fisherman’s Cottage

Robert Abele III

Mr. Abele’s image of a humble cottage elevates the architecture it illustrates and brings to mind Edward Hopper’s personifications of similar coastal structures. The painterly quality of his surface makes the viewer want to learn more about his process, to see the way he utilizes his brush. Painted en plein air in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the image captures the specificity of this house with spare and quick strokes while evoking the atmosphere and the personality of this unique place.

SECOND PLACE Deep Ocean

Crystalline Teardrop Lindsey Epstein

The fine quality of Ms. Epstein’s ceramic work is immediately apparent, even from a photograph. The contrast between the pale blues and dark grays of her glaze give the coastal feeling which is a wonderful reference to our region. The small scale of this work also surprised me. At just nine inches tall, it has a much larger presence aesthetically and conveys the artist’s deep respect for her medium.

THIRD PLACE Bumper Janie Kinnane

Ms. Kinnane’s wonderfully illustrative image of a humpback whale swimming just beneath the water’s surface has a fantastic graphic quality. She uses the medium of the block print expertly, and her use of line to describe the massive body of her subject is extremely appealing. Although it was carved from a block of cherry, the final image has a sense of fluidity and ease.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2020 SCA Annual Art Contest! Many thanks to our juror, Michael Rose, of Michael Rose Fine Art, for his work and and thoughts on our entries. The contest was open to all 2020 participating tour artists!

”First, I would like to thank South Coast Artists for inviting me to select award winners in this exciting contest. It was very difficult to select a top three out of the many wonderful entries, which had such a wonderful range from sensitive seascapes to textural collages and seemingly everything in between. It was wonderful to see the breadth of work represented amongst artists who participate in the studio tour and who in turn bring so much wonderful art and creativity to our region in Southern New England.

While choosing three works out of so many to honor with prizes was indeed a difficult task, I think the following three pieces reflect many of the best qualities shown throughout the pieces I reviewed.
