2 PAPUA NEW GUINEA HOLIDAYS

Papua New Guinea is Australia’s closest international neighbour and as a single country can boast the most diverse set of language groups (more than 1000), cultures, scenery and activities available anywhere in the world. PNG Holidays seeks to present to you a showcase of packages from these diverse cultures, where idyllic scenery and such amazing activities are just waiting to be experienced. In Papua New Guinea you will experience the traditional cultures that have been kept alive through the incredible and difficult topography

that makes so many areas remote and accessible only by plane. There are few roads and none between the two largest cities in PNG! The largely Melanesian cultures still actively hold their feasts and ceremonies using wigs, shells, body painting and headdresses. Traditional “Sing-sings” (celebrations) are vibrant and spectacular.PNG Cultures vary according to region. They range from The New Guinea Highlands in the shadow of 14,000 foot mountains down to coastal and island villages where travel is still

by outrigger canoe through sparkling crystal clear waters. All of Papua New Guinea is a delightful bounty of pristine nature, largely untouched and undiscovered by the rest of the world. We invite you to explore this wonderful land untouched by mass tourism, to discover the peoples who have been there far longer than european Australia and yet who hold such a special place in our hearts.Acknowledgement goes to David Kirkland for many amazing images of Papua New Guinea.

In a world where there is nothing new, PNG Holidays opens the gates to a forgotten place, where time has stood still and where beauty remains unchanged...

Travelling hints TIME The whole of PNG is GMT+10, however, when people mention ‘PNG TIME’ or ‘Melanesian Time’ this equates to a relaxed view to timings and schedules, similar to ‘Pacific Time’ which is evident on most Pacific islands.

TIPS are not expected at resorts but always appreciated. A kind word is always welcome.

CURRENCY is the Kina - pronounced as ‘key-na’ and Toea (coins) - pronounced as ‘toy-ya’. It is based on the decimal system similar to Australia.

MOBIlE PHONES are widely used and there two main carriers Telikom and Digicel. Both offer local prepaid phone cards which you can setup to use your mobile phone. These can be obtained upon arrival at the main airports.

HEAlTH RISKS The main one is Malaria. It

is wise to bring your own tropical strength insect repellent but consult your doctor regarding other current medical and health risks.

BANKS are not easily accessible so it is best to exchange some money prior to arriving in PNG. Many Australian debit cards can be used in the local ATMs to withdraw local currency.

CREDIT CARDS are accepted at all major hotels for incidental charges.

6 PAPUA NEW GUINEA HOLIDAYS

Papua New Guinea is located in the coral triangle of marine

biodiversity with the highest diversity of tropical fish and coral in

the world. PNG occupies the eastern portion of the island of New

Guinea, the second largest island in the world. Situated directly

north of Australia, it consists of a mainland with some 600 islands,

of which New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville are the largest.

PNG is recognised internationally as one of the best dive locations in

the world with twice as many marine species as the waters of the Red

Sea and up to ten times as many as the Caribbean. It has become

known as an ‘underwater photographer’s paradise’ with many

international award-winning photos being taken in PNG waters.

The country is surrounded by the Bismarck, Coral and Solomon seas

whose constant movements feed and enrich the marine environment.

With 17,000 km of coastline and 45,000 sq kms of reef systems, divers

can enjoy minimal contact with other dive groups. The immense

diversity of sites include barrier reefs, coral walls, coral gardens,

patch reefs, fringing reefs, sea grass beds, coral atolls and wrecks.

Many dive operators offer dive instruction, scuba gear hire and a

range of other services, and Nitrox is offered by most operators.

Diving is possible all year round, the optimal season is generally from

mid-April to mid-June and from mid-September to mid-December.

Water temperature ranges from 26°C along the edge of the Coral

Sea and up to 31°C in the Bismarck Sea, with visibility from 50 to

150 feet - dependent on the wet season and local micro climate.

Papua New Guinea has its own hyperbaric recompression

facility located in Port Moresby. The facility is situated

within a private hospital and is operated and maintained

to international standards by Hyperbaric Health Australia.

Fishing Adventures

Fishing is probably the most popular pastime for coast and Island dwelling Papua new Guineans; whether it is for the sport, angling for leisure, earning an income or just wanting to feed the family. Papua New Guinea has an incredible array of light tackle sport fishing options, with almost every species of Pacific gamefish inhabiting the plankton and baitfish-rich waters adjacent to the reef and continental shelf... Imagine trolling rigged baits or deep diving minnow lures for the likes of wahoo, spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish (mahi-mahi), various trevally, sailfish and marlin. These tropical speedtsers offer exceptional sportfishing opportunities.

Then of course river fishing adventures abound for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Golden Snapper, threadfin Salmon and the highly sought Black Bass - the most prestigeous and for it’s size the world’s toughest fighting fish.

Papua New Guinea is famous for its fishing, with the Papuan Black Bass, being world renowned as pound-for-pound, the world’s toughest fighting fish.

SurfingAdventures

PNG is a surf rich country during the surf season but you need to get out there to discover and enjoy it. The New Ireland region directly around Kavieng has seven or so reef breaks. Travelling down the region’s east and central coasts, you also have an abundance of rarely surfed breaks. Whilst the outer islands off New Ireland offer the same quality waves and variety of breaks as any surf destination worldwide, this means consistently good surfing conditions. Surfers have access to a variety of rights and lefts that are generally in the vicinity of 3’-5’ but occasionally peak at around the 6’ mark which can at times test your abilities. The northerly swell season runs from around October to May producing some world-class breaks that can be surfed on any tide. The surf is generally not as powerful as other regions in the world but you can certainly get sizeable, challenging and even shallow breaking waves depending on your choice of reef break. The Vanimo and Madang regions on the mainland have a variety of good quality surf breaks that have a mixture of reef, point and beach breaks.

Thousands of miles of coastline and hundreds of possibilities. As a surfer’s paradise, PNG is one of a few remote destinations with world class waves.

New Ireland is an unspoilt aquatic playground with a great range of surf breaks and Nusa has been looking after discerning surfers wanting to avoid crowds and enjoy a truly memorable surf experience.

Being surfers themselves, they know what surfers want and run a slick operation to ensure they meet surfers expectations. Kavieng reefs are under management plans which enlist Surf Quotas to ensure sustainable surfer numbers and no overcrowding of the breaks.

Set in complete privacy, the 180 acres the retreat is a comfortable three hour drive south along the picturesque Buluminski Highway from Kavieng.

The bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront, beds have mosquito nets and the experienced and friendly staff will take care of all your needs.

Special agreements with the resource owners ensure that all breaks can be surfed at any time. The level of difficulty varies, depending on the size of the swell and the direction. lissenung is close to some well known surf spots, such as Ral and Senta Pass, as well as newer breaks at Bangatan, Nusalomon and lemus Islands. Ral is in their backyard! The resort’s local guides will ensure that you get out there and experience the best tropical reef surfing in uncrowded surroundings. At the end of the day, relax and recharge your batteries and have a drink with your hosts, while the cooks start preparing a hearty meal from locally sourced seafood and fresh produce.

Vanimo is PNG’s best kep surfing secret, due to it’s location on the north west coast of mainland PNG, a few miles from the Indonesian border. Today it enjoys a low profile as this small surf lodge caters for a maximum of 20 surfers at any one time - unlike some of the larger surf destinations. It has a range of breaks within easy access of the lodge, ensuring that valuable surf time is not wasted on travel. The swell charges in from the variances of North with no islands in its way, with consistent breaks of 2 -10 feet.

Due to the flight schedules into and out of Vanimo, an overnight or two may be necessary in Port Moresby.

The Kokoda Track was the scene of bitter fighting in 1942 as the Japanese advanced towards Port Moresby. Many Japanese and Australian soldiers died along the Track, both in battle and from malaria. As the interest in Australia’s cultural identity and recent history grows, walking the Kokoda Track has become a rite of passage for a new generation of Australians in order to gain an understanding of what Australian soldiers endured during WWII.

The Black Cat Track, lark Force Track, The Old Bulldog Trek, Mt Wilhelm, Mt Giluwe, Mt Hagen, the Bismarck and the Kubor Ranges, all offer a variety of other trekking and climbing options catering to all levels of fitness.

When you think of trekking in PNG, the Kokoda Track immediately comes to mind however there are many options for trekking, mountain climbing and bushwalking.

The lark Force totalling 1200 men, the majority of whom were the 2/22nd Battalion who were sent to defend Rabaul against a Japanese invasion. lark Force were forced out of Rabaul on 23rd January 1942 and informed by Australian authorities that there was to be no reinforcements, no further support and no evacuation. The final battle in the territory of Papua was waged on the north coast, where the Japanese had established beachheads around Buna Mission, at Buna, Gona and Sanananda. Senior Allied officers believed that the battle would be relatively easy to win but it turned into one of the hardest and most costly battles of the entire war in New Guinea.

Our tour revisits the three beachhead battle sites; Girua and Kokoda Village. It can be taken as a stand-alone tour or added to your Kokoda Trek to further enrich and round out your Kokoda experience.

Bird Watching

With the right itinerary even the shorter trips here can usually find about 20 species of birds of paradise. New Guinea and its off-shore islands as a whole have over 400 endemic species, the single greatest concentration on earth. Many birds are endemic to individual islands or archipelagos and a lot of travel is needed to see them all. New Guinea is often subdivided into 3 distinct area for birding: Indonesian Papua, the Papua New Guinea mainland and the New Guinea Islands.

Our Bird watching operator was the first tour company to regularly visit Bougainville when it reopened, and actively work with local people there to make it more accessible to birders. In 2011 they

were the first bird group to stay at Philip’s guest house situated in the burnt out shell of the men’s quarters at Panguna mine!

Many species are shy and low-density but the rewards are immense. We offer a number of itineraries of varying lengths to destinations throughout the country. Our “Taste of New Guinea” birding tours are designed to be easily slotted together to make for more comprehensive and extended itineraries. If you do not see one you like, we are happy to personalise one for you based on your own species wish list, available time and finances and can combine these with cultural interest tours, provincial shows and all other options.

PNG offers some of the world’s best birding - from the Kiunga lowland rainforests to the highland heaths of the Tari Gap & the savannah lands of Port Moresby.

Take in the history of Rabaul and Kokopo

WWII History plus city sightseeing optionsPort Moresby overlooks a pretty, natural harbour below the Owen Stanley Ranges. It is the national capital and home to many of the country’s diverse cultures.

There is now a major road that cuts through the hills to Jacksons International Airport It is the major hub for business and hosts one of the countries largest markets.

Parliament house is architecturally designed to reflect the Maprik Haus Tambaran (House of Spirits). The museum is close by with a visually wonderful array of

PNG cultural artefacts, fauna and history. Nearby you can see the houses built on stilts over the water at Hanuabada.

There are botanical gardens with boardwalks running through the jungle and incredible collections of orchids which grow abundantly throughout PNG.

No first visit to Port Moresby is complete without a visit to The Australian War graves commission maintained Bomana War Cemetery, the resting place of 3,823 souls from the Kokoda and other WWII campaigns.

East New Britain Province is a tropical paradise of lush secondary rainforest vegetation common to the wet tropical lowlands. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in East New Britain Province until it was destroyed in 1994 by the falling ash of a volcanic eruption. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres away.

Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British

Commonwealth during World War I, when it became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937. During World War II it was captured by the Japanese in 1942, and it became the main base of Japanese military and naval activity in the South Pacific. East New Britain has a fascinating World War 2 history and visitors can explore Japanese caved systems, barge tunnels, aircraft wrecks and submarines. It is truly an amazing place that has so much diversity and beauty to offer.

Cultural Tours

Outside the provincial shows and festivals, there is still so much to experience of the many different aspects of life in Papua New Guinea.

Every village visit is a cultural tour. Papua New Guinea as a country does belong to the developing world and is full of ancient rituals. The rituals in each culture remain vibrant to this day and the traditions are evident whether celebrating the arrival of a new born, the transition to manhood, marriage, sickness or the departure of a loved one. A village “sing-sing” celebrates life on a much smaller scale than a provincial show but is still prepared for as if the entire country were coming along to watch!

There are many cultural tours that include other aspects of cultural life in Papua New Guinea. Visit the Asaro Mudmen in the Eastern Highlands, the Trobriand Islands Yam festival which celebrates the harvest there, mask festivals which celebrate links to ancestral spirits and Canoe Festivals that demonstrate the sporting prowess and fitness of those whose lives depend on the seas to feed their families.

In the following pages you will find a selection of cultural tours that encompass aspects of life and history in Papua New Guinea but with more than 1000 language groups this is just the tip of the iceberg as to what can be experienced there!

Taking part in a cultural tour anywhere in Papua New Guinea you immerse yourself in the local culture and get a true sense of their history and way of life

It is staged in Kokopo each July (all other tour options are available year round) and attracts displays and performers from all over the country, providing opportunities to see both common and rare masks. The three major genres of mask on display are the ancestor masks, spirit masks and Tumbuan masks. There is no other occasion on PNG’s cultural

calendar where such a wide range of masks can be seen in one place, along with their accompanying dances and dramas. There are also many stalls and displays with local artefacts, handicrafts and foods available for sale.

This tour includes a full daytrip of the region including Rabaul Harbour and Volcanoes, North Coast Road, WW2 history including the Japanese Submarine base and barge tunnels, war memorial, cemetery and museum, a visit to the food markets and Bainings Fire Dance performance.

This tour gives a brief insight into PNG’s Western Highlands Culture:

Day 1 - Arrive Mt Hagen airport and transfer to Magic Mountain Nature lodge. If time permits, you will have a tour of Mt Hagen town and markets on the way. In the evening you’ll see a demonstration of courtship and have a leisurely walk around the lodge.

You will see traditional attire worn by the chief and his wives, spend time in the village and experience a traditional ‘mumu’ lunch where food is cooked in the ground (similar to a Hangi in New Zealand). Witness demonstrations of kina shells, stone sharpening, fire making and visit the cultural centre. late afternoon, transfer back to Magic Mountain lodge.

A CONTRAST OF CULTURES

THE TROBRIAND ISLANDSOur Trobriand Islands tour includes a unique village stay at idyllic Munuwata Island, where you will be immersed in the fascinating culture of the Trobriand Islanders and experience the subsistence lifestyle of a simple people living off seafood, coconuts and yam gardens.

The Trobriand islanders are thought to have arrived by sea from Polynesia at least a thousand years ago. The ”Trobes” are known as the “islands of love” due to the islanders’ custom of encouraging young males and females to engage in romantic

behaviour soon after puberty. Widely misinterpreted by westerners as promiscuity it is actually a form of courtship and part of the marriage ritual, However there is also said to be a tradition that, during the annual yam harvest celebrations, married or betrothed couples are permitted to flirt with other partners. The romantic customs of the Trobriand Islanders do not extend to outsiders (“dimdims”). The Trobriand Islanders are a very proud people and they value the propagation of their genetic lines and they disapprove of casual relationships between islanders and outsiders.

This itinerary features three of PNG’s contrasting regions with varied natural, cultural and historical attractions. This tour is available all year round:GOROKA - the gateway to the Highlands. Experience the scenic terrain, bio-diverse forests and bush huts scattered amongst the mountain villages. Visit museums, cultural centres, taste exotic fruit and have a chance to see the raucous Raggiana Bird of Paradise. Accommodation will be at the Bird of Paradise Hotel.MADANG - In an airconditioned 4x4 vehicle, travel by the Highlands Highway

through the head of the Ramu Valley and up through the many river crossings in the Finisterre Range. Then relax and overnight at the lovely Jais Aben Resort. This part of the tour takes in the colonial and war history.Simbai - Take the short charter flight to the Madang Highlands to discover a remote, thousand year old exotic tribal culture. This unique experience reflects minimal changes over time with ancient practices. Accommodation will be at the Kalam guesthouse operated by the local community.

Port Moresby Hotels

Port Moresby does not have the best reputation when it comes to personal security and as in just about every city in the world there are areas where tourists and business people alike simply should not go.

All the hotels that we recommend are secure, include shuttle bus transfers from and to Jackson’s International Airport and are conveniently located to enable you to meet either with government departments or your business contacts.

From a leisure travel perspective, the rates charged by the Port Moresby hotels may seem excessive but with high costs, and massive infrastructure and mining developments underway

demand for these hotels always exceeds the available supply.

Depending on your final or onward destination in Papua New Guinea, airline schedules may conspire to require you to spend a night or two in Port Moresby - there are two hotels a short drive from the airport but if you have time pay a visit to and stay in the City - overlooking the harbour or out near Parliament House at Waigani.

High Season rates exist just about all year round but are even higher around ANZAC day when Kokoda trekkers return to Port Moresby to commemorate ANZAC Day at Bomana War Cemetary.

In the Nation’s Capital - Port Moresby, world class hotels exist and combine modern rooms with fitness facilities, meeting spaces and Melanesian Hospitality
