The Adolescent Brain• The prefrontal
cortex undergoes massive structural changes during adolescence
• It is one of the last brain areas to mature completely
The Adolescent Brain
AdolescenceAdolescence a time when many new behaviours begin to emerge, some of which frustrate parents
This is Perfectly NormalYou might be surprised to learn that many adolescent behaviours are a direct result of brain changes and are completely normal• Attention• Motivation• Risk Taking• Priorities• Decision Making
Risk Taking/Impulsivity
Risk taking allows adolescents to• Explore adult behaviour
and privileges• Accomplish
developmental tasks • Learn from their mistakesLess able to inhibit impulsive behaviours
The Limits and Boundaries• Teenagers want to know what the
boundaries and/or expectations are• Ensure your child understands that these
are not about threats or unreasonable demands, they are about safety and over time they can be re-negotiated
• Can’t lock them up in a tower. Need to assist them to navigate the challenges / temptations that they will face
Sleep, Diet and Exercise• Balance between work and play• Importance of sleep• Energy drinks• Adolescents make the wrong decisions• Part time work (2 shifts per week is
recommended)
Technology
• Negotiate terms of use with your teenager if the items are being used excessively
• Agree on a time when the computer, phone should be turned off
• Know what your teenager is accessing on the Internet
• Alert them to the dangers of accessing certain content
Technology
Study• Create good study habits now• Set a study routine• Year 10 expectation regarding study time
– 1 ¼ to 2 hours daily.
Asking the Right Questions• Can you tell me what is happening?• How would you like things to be?• What things are worrying you at the moment?• What needs to change?• What can I do to help? Could someone else
help you?• What’s happening in your life right now?• How could I change to be more helpful?
Strategies• Have clear expectations and give positive
feedback• Focus on the behaviour you want• Instead of often saying “No”, say “Yes and …”• Non-Verbals / Body Language• Questioning for understanding – “What did I
ask you to do?” “What should you be doing?”• Describe only the behaviour you see e.g. “The
dirty clothes are beside the laundry basket.”
Strategies• Ignore secondary behaviour – e.g. eye
rolling, grunting, pouting, sighing, “whatever”, door slamming etc.
• Individual close talk – keep it private not public
• Partial agreement – “Yes, I understand that you didn’t make the mess, but I would appreciate a hand to clean it up before dinner thanks.”
• Broken record – repeat the instruction
