Dear Patriot,

When Infantryman Brendan Marrocco arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he was in critical condition. Just 22 years old, an armor-piercing roadside bomb claimed both of his arms and both of his legs. His body was severely burned, and one of his eyes was seriously damaged.

Just two weeks after arriving, he told his medical team he had one goal; to walk under his own power by the time his combat infantry brigade returned from Iraq. Thanks to Brendan’s iron will and determination and a little help from The American Legion, he did just that!

Most of Brendan’s fellow soldiers had not seen him since he was loaded into a helicopter 145 miles north of Baghdad. Many assumed he would not survive. When Brendan arrived at the airport in Honolulu, he expected just a few of his buddies would be there to meet him.

Instead, his entire platoon plus several others from Alpha Company stood at the airport gate and greeted Brendan with a round of applause.

Your gifts to The American Legion made it possible for Brendan and his family to spend 11 days with his platoon, arranging for transportation, housing, and other needs during their visit. Supporting heroes like Brendan is just one of the many ways The American Legion is helping those who have served our country.

Brendan’s WISH of seeing his platoon again, being there with them when they returned from Iraq, and sharing that magnificent moment with his family was made possible with the help of friends like you!

When you send a generous holiday gift today – you may be helping our American heroes … heroes like Brendan.

After the reunion, Brendan and his family headed back to Walter Reed for months of rehabilitation. A few days after the reunion he underwent his 13th surgery – another arduous step in his journey home.

Imagine what it’s like to sit in a hospital bed day in and day out, your body broken, your will and determination to heal fierce. Day after day your focus is on healing, on pushing your body to respond like it used to, on spending the holidays with loved ones … ON GOING HOME.

Thousands of our nation’s heroes are in hospitals around the country, and they need to know that you care … especially during the holiday season!

When you send a gift today using the enclosed First-Class stamp, you can help provide comfort items to wounded heroes – items like loose-fitting sweat suits that cover a soldier’s healing body without adding pressure to the burns he suffered during an RPG attack in Ramadi, an iPod to help drown out the tinnitus that has plagued the medic ever since she drove too close to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, a gripping novel that provides a welcome distraction from PTSD.

We work hard to help make wishes come true!

Whether it’s organizing special outings, breaks from day-to-day hospital life, connecting soldiers with their families, helping a struggling family get by while their hero is recovering, or by helping veterans during natural disasters like the tornadoes in Moore, Oklahoma, with your generous support, YOU can be there for our hospitalized troops and veterans every step of the way,

During this holiday season … please remember our veterans … American Heroes like Brendan.

By following three easy steps, YOU can help us make a difference in the lives of our heroes:

STEP #1: Sign the enclosed Holiday Card. I want to present this card to another hospitalized veteran like Brendan. So many veterans need to know they are not forgotten – especially during the holidays. They need to know that you are there for them.

STEP #2: Fill out the “Holiday Wish” reply form and send it back to with your BEST GIFT. The amount of your gift isn’t nearly as important as your resolve to help our American Heroes.

STEP #3: Return your reply form and your signed Holiday Card in the enclosed envelope – with your best gift! Don’t forget to affix the 46¢ stamp I have enclosed.

So many of our young service men and women are turning to The American Legion for help. YOU can ensure they get the help they deserve! You can help provide them with the support they need through the great American Legion programs for veterans and active duty servicemembers – and their families.

Your gift is so very important. Our veterans sacrificed so much to ensure our great nation remains free and secure. And while we never put a price tag on their honor and sacrifice, we can show our appreciation by helping care for them in their time of need.

God bless you and your family, and God Bless America. Sincerely,

William A. Pease National Development Director The American Legion

P.S. I am counting on you to be most generous as there are so very many heroes in need. Please sign the enclosed Holiday Card and return it to me with your donation TODAY.
