Mitzvos which encompass vast areas of Jewish life. Among them are laws regarding marriage. Did you ever wonder why at a wedding there is a very large challah which the chosson makes Hamotzi over and distributes pieces to all the guests? Rabbi Akiva Eiger (1761 – 1837) offers a creative explanation. The Gemara (Brachos 8) relates that in Eretz Yisrael, the custom was that when a man married a woman, they would ask him: Matza or motzeh? In other words, they would ask the groom whether the appropriate passage for his wife is the verse from Mishlei that begins with the word matza, as it is written: He who finds a wife (Matza) finds goodor whether the more appropriate verse is the one beginning with the word motzeh, as it is written: And I find (motzeh) the woman more bitter than death(Koheles 7:26). Hopefully, the answer was reflected in the verse from Mishlei! In order to wish the chosson well, participants eat up the motzileaving the chosson only with matza- a good wife! May our live be filled with goodness and kindness always. A BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE *Closing the Women Sections This Coming High Holidays?*

What they did in the Ponovitch Yeshiva in 1991 The numbers of yeshiva students that would attend the Ponovitch Yeshiva in Bnei Brak for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur continued to swell. There was simply not enough space in the beis medrash to accommodate the overflow of bochrim. By the year 1991 it was impossible to hold in the beis medrash the bulging numbers. The recommendation was made to erect a wall that would split the women's section in half in order to open up many more seats for the men. It seemed rather obvious that the halacha dictates that the bochrim of the yeshiva who had the obligation to pray with a minyan should take precedence over the group of women that would pray in that space. However, they first had to receive the permission of the Yeshiva head, the gaon, Rav Menachem Man Shach zt”l (1899-2001). When he was informed of the details he responded that he needed time to weigh the issue. Two days later Rav Shach returned with an answer. He said the following: “Let us carefully consider who the individuals are who are praying with us. The women's section is made up of many women who due to their personal situation in life come with very special prayers. Some of the women who come are not yet married, some are praying for children; they pour their hearts out with supplication to merit blessing from the Almighty. Some who attend our prayers are older women, widows, who are here without husbands and feel the pain of loneliness.” “The supplication of the women who join us emanate from a deep place. Their tefillos are saturated with tears.” Rav Shach continued, “Their prayers, perhaps more than ours, have the strength to break through even the locked gates in heaven. Therefore, we must understand that our entire Yeshiva rests on the prayers of women - how can we possibly allow even one less woman to attend?” Rav Shach did not allow the women’s section to be diminished by even a single chair. (This episode was shared by the prominent posek Rav Yitzchak Zilberstein shlit’a in his recent respona regarding the issue of opening the women section to men for this coming Rosh Hashanah

and Yom Kippur. Thank you to Saul Gold for submitting.
