The new English and Maths GCSEs began this
September; the first exams will be in the Summer of 2017.
Results will be graded 1 to 9 instead of A* to G.
New GCSE Grades: English and Maths
New grading structure for GCSE
Grade 5 will be the new ‘good pass’ for GCSE Mathematics and English
Report Card/Target Grades
This year, for English and Maths only, students will receive a target grade with a number and either the letter a, b, or c.6a = very secure in the grade (B+)6b = mostly secure in the grade (B) 6c = insecure in the grade (B-)
English at KS4
Year 10 EnglishAll of our current Year 10 will be sitting the brand new English Literature and Language GCSEs in the summer of 2017.
They started to prepare for both of these qualifications this September.

How can you help?
To read is to succeed
–Encourage your child to read something for pleasure for at least 15 minutes a day:
–Novels, newspapers, magazines, film/game reviews, graphic novels, diaries, autobiographies, biographies, travel writing, letters, essays.
(But Facebook doesn’t count ) –Then practise writing in these styles–We highly recommend buying cheap
copies of the set texts so that notes can be made at home

Maths at KS4
Key Stage 4 Maths
1. Foundation Edexcel Certificate in Maths GCSE.
2. Higher Edexcel Certificate in Maths GCSE
Both qualifications involve three exams at the end of year 11, one Calculator and two Non-Calculator, all with equal weighting.
Foundation Edexcel Certificate
• This course has a heavy emphasis on number and functional skills of mathematics that are needed in adult life.
• There is an increase in breadth and depth of study in the new GCSE.
• And content moving down from the Higher Tier to the Foundation tier at GCSE
Higher Edexcel Certificate
• This course has a heavy emphasis on algebra and application of mathematics.
• There is an increase in breadth and depth of study in the new GCSE.
• And content moving down from A Level maths to the Higher tier at GCSE.

How can you help?
• A little maths everyday helps!!!– Encourage your child to practice a skill
everyday: times tables, long multiplication.– Talk about time with them: get them to read
timetables for bus routes or trains.– Ask them to measure ingredients when
cooking, discuss metric and imperial measures.
– Revise with flashcards the formulas they need to remember.
